Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!
I went to the allergist today and he put me on prednisone. Its just for a week and I am going to try not to stress about it. He said that there shouldn't be a weight gain because the dosage is low. I am going to drink a lot of water! So after my visit I went grocery shopping and purchased "clean" foods. With the allergies and having allergy induced asthma, I think I need to stay away from the additives as much as possible. I recently discovered that chocolate and milk are not my friend...sniff sniff. And unless I want the reactions that I was having to them, I am best to stay away from it. I did get some sponge cake, Oraki you made it sound so good in your post!! RM tonight: Shrimp, veggies, wheat tortilla, sponge cake and berries Gayle

Aw thanks, Shirl and Pam. I'm just spouting stuff that I've been through myself. I'm a serious self-sabotager and since I can't figure out why, I just do my best to control it. It's hard. Getting angry at the Standard American Diet and being a total control freak about what I'm eating has helped tremendously. I'm tired of feeling corpulent and gluttonous, it's just embarassing to me. I'm done. The next time I go to Europe or Asia I don't want to feel like the fat American who is so rich she has nothing better to do than laze around eating and eating and eating. I would like more leg room on airplanes and arena seats... duh, make my ass smaller! I just want to get there as quickly as possible, and it can only be done by being in COMPLETE CONTROL. I control what goes into my shopping cart and into my pan and into my mouth. I control getting my butt away from the sewing machine and taking a neighborhood walk. I control that scale. I know what I have to do to make it do what I want: Eat clean healthy nutrient-packed food three times a day and walk the dog. Seems so easy, but it requires constant vigilance. I was unsuccessful previously because I did not hold vigil, did not scrutinize what I was putting in my mouth, and did not walk around my neigborhood. I want to be successful and I will be! I deserve it!
So do you!

Gayle - I was on prednisone for 2 years back in 1996. I turned to CAD in '98 to lose the 15 pounds I gained. I have maintained that loss for 10 years (except when pregnant). Anyway, prednisone has awul side effects, but you will not gain weight from it in one week at a low dose. It took me a few months to gain.
Angela - it's all about the psychology. In fact, there is an entire book out (I think it is called Beck Diet Solution) that states pretty much any balanced diet will work, but people fail because they don't have the dieting skills. As in they don't know what to do not to sabotage themselves. Seems like you got there on your own! Congrats! You do make it sound so easy, but we all know it's not! ![]() |

Hi Everyone -
Quick check-in before the day starts it's whirlwind full force. I'm hanging comfortably at 155 with my usual couple of pounds up and then back down depending on what I'm eating. I have found myself reaching for food during some stress and business and have been thankful to have all of your posts to inspire me. I couldn't agree with you more Angela! It really is crazy how our "foods" are not designed to nourish and take care of us but instead get us to eat more and more. Once I really learned this and the effects of insulin I felt like I knew the big secret. It doesn't always give me the resolve to keep that food out of my mouth, but I can't lie to myself about it anymore either. Hi to all of my friends -keep up the good work -I'm out here cheering for your CAD/CALP success!! Even when not posting regularly. - Amy

Good Morning, Ladies. It has been hot! 102 yesterday. Hopefully a little cooler today. We had smoothies for dinner. Yum! We are going out of town this weekend (again). We have been out of town every weekend for the last five weeks! Yikes! This is the last one for awhile. I have a hard time staying on plan where I don't have control over the food choices. I am just going to do my best and remind myself that I won't starve if I don't eat.
Angela - I love your recent posts! Kate |

Question for you ladies.
When I was on Atkins, I could lose at over 20 carbs per meal. I could maintain at 100 carbs per day. If looking at my CMs as low carb small meals, would that 20 carbs per CM be a starting point? I think I have been looking at CMs as basically No-Carb, or Induction level carb meals, and wonder if that has been too low for me---recognizing that everyone is different. I have been doing CAD now since July 13th, and not giving up--just trying to figure out what will make it work best for me!!! And I have figured out what that might be, might help someone else, or someone else has already figured out what works for them. How do you others look at carbs in CMs? I know the ladies that do 1 meal a day. That isn't an option here, for couple reasons.

Ladies! I just had to report that the scale flashed on 170 this morning and then landed on 171. Yesterday was 171. Which means that I have lost 7 to 8 pounds since starting CAD July 8th.
That is even with all of the weekends out of town and a vacation in the middle! So, my goal is to be solid at 170 by next Friday and I will change my siggy weight. I am a Happy Camper! Kate |

Good morning girls!!
Karen, maybe try the higher carbs at your cm's, if you've been doing lower carbs and it's not working, then you might bneeding higher carbs. I know the book says to eat 4 carbs per serving...so that may be 4 carbs per item and if you have 4 items, then yes, that would be 20 carbs. When I was eating cm's, I did 0-4 carbs for the meal and that worked to a degree, but my problem was the cravings I would get whenever I ate any cm's. So give it a try and see, your right, everyone has to find a way to make it work, let us know how it turns out... ![]() The scales are SLOWLY going back down....153 this morning. And my menu is jumping up again, I'm having a desert today. I haven't had one in a week and I'm starting to crave one, so I'm am having pie/ice cream. Menu....chicken soup, garlic toast, tortilla/cheese, necterine/blackberry pie/ice cream, drink/braggs. Yum, I may eat earlier today, so they do call me oot again during my lunch...I hate that!! And they always seem to do it during lunch.... ![]() I'll check back in later.... Way to go Kate!! ![]()

I am going to go back to recording food intake on computer, and look at what levels actually eating. And then IF I can get figured out what might work with CAD, see if DH works that way too. The noon meal at my mother's every day is what is messing up the system, but that is not something that can change. She has been good about trying to add LC foods, and has quit making comments if I don't eat everything she has fixed (like mashed potatoes every day, and corn and gravy most days) but it is tough to pass on home-made peach pies, chocolate cake, and cookies every day........... That is what gets DH, I think......... |

Also, is it higher for men than women? My DH tried for 2 weeks, and did a pretty good job, but he claimed he was starving all the time, and I couldn't figure that one out for him. I thought by 2 weeks that insulin response should have been over, but he was still claiming to be starving after that much time. |

Hi all!
Angela, you wrote one of the best posts! You're right, success at this takes daily vigilance. It is a daily routine, just like showering and brushing your teeth. It's hard at times, but worth it! Cindy, I'm so glad the scale is moving in the right direction for you!! You hang in there, friend -- you've come much to far!! I'm always rooting for you (and everyone else here too!!! )I continue to maintain, within a few pounds, and I'm thankful for that, but now I'd like to shoot for the goal of 120 pounds lost, so I have 6 more to go. I have to readjust my numbers as my digital scale is on the blitz. I mentioned in an earlier post that I have been weighing myself on 2 scales each day, since April I think, and keeping track on my calendar of both weights. The "old reliable" scale in my upstairs is one of the ones like they used to have in school nurse's offices -- one that you slide the weight and it also has a pole to measure height as well. It's quite reliable, but also a few pounds off from my digital scale's reading, so like I said, I'll be adjusting my weights to read what the older scale says. Unfortunately, according to that one, I'm not under 200 yet, but I also weighed heavier than 311 pounds when starting this program too! Yikes!! It's still 114 pounds lost, so it's all great!!! Have a wonderful weekend, and Happy Labor Day, friends!!! I hope you get to enjoy some great get-togethers with family and friends!! Be safe!

Okay, guys. I will admit I thought I really blew it yesterday. I had an all-day seminar, and just ate the catered lunch. And it was exceptional. And then in afternoon, I had 2 cookies, provided for break. Then had salad for supper. Today, I went into computer and plugged in my food for yesterday, and if I had just not had 2 glasses of milk for supper, I would have been okay for consumption. And only the cookies would have been my "cheat" But I was also over 4,000 for sodium............Gee, does that seem like it might be an issue?????????????? Maybe a major one?????????? Bet that could explain weight gain more than calories-----calories for the day was just over 2000, when I actually plugged it all in.
I think a major stumbling block for me is the volume of "good" foods that it is okay to eat. When I eat a large RM, I need to keep it more good foods, not treats. Plugging in the foods to check where I am eating is time spent, but I think it will benefit me to take time to do that for awhile. I might even start a new thread for those who want encouragement in posting days totals. But I might put it on main carb lobby. Guess we could start one for those doing CAD, as well......... |

I am enjoying all the posts. I am still muddling along on my first week of CAD (following the Atkins). I am consistently up about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds which I think is pretty good considering the added back carbs. I will have to wait for an average though. I am so impatient! Thanks for all your stories.

Hello everyone,
DH and I completed our Bowflex workout last night and I already completed all 3 miles of WATP Walk Away Your Waistline. It is a much faster pace than the 3 mile Power Walk and I can really tell the difference. I am continuing to enjoy the way I feel after the workout and that is what motivates me to keep them up. I have no doubt in my mind that I can lose weight on CALP just by following the plan. I have chosen to include exercise because I want to tone my muscles so they will help to shape my body. I have been lazy and flabby for so long now that becoming fit and healthy is the goal I am aiming for. I have a long way to go to get to my goal and expect to be posting here for a very long time. I worry about boring everyone with my daily menus, but realize I must continue because it keeps me motivated and helps to keep me going in the right direction. I learn so much from being a part of this group and value the knowledge that is so generously offered. This is my journey to a healthy mind and body and I want to thank everyone for taking it with me. My menu for yesterday included: CM: 2 cups of black coffee CM: Pork chop and green beans w/vinaigrette RM: Salad w/ranch, cheeseburger patty w/a slice of bacon, cucumber, and corn on the cob I took my chromium and drank plenty of water. |

Hi everybody! Remember me???
Angela - that post was so wonderfully written.. I feel like you wrote it just for me. I am the wishy-washiest.. always have been! By the way, Angela, when you said to eat "real yogurt".. what is that exactly? I guess you are not talking about Yoplait.. I am reading in here about every day, but in between packing and getting ready to move (to Minnesota), and still working from home every evening, I don't have much time. So y'all take care! Stay on your plans as much as you can.. and I'll be around!

Hi Dana! Glad you're still with us!
Thanks for the compliment. So many of us struggle with being wishy-washy. Me especially. I really had to take a stand for my health, for my family, and mostly for myself. My life is probably half over already, and it scares me that I will be an old obese woman on thirty medications unable to get around. There is an enormous difference between 90 year old Jack LaLane and my 90 year old grandma... something to think about. I don't plan on being an exercise nut like Jack, but he really gets me thinking about "quality of life." Who do I want to be when I'm in my 80's? I don't want to be like my grandma, that's for sure. My son is 4, and I want to be a mom who has the energy to provide him with a dynamite childhood. I can't afford to be wishy washy any longer. Time is a wastin'! Oh, and real yogurt is not yoplait, or just about any brand you will find at the grocery store. Real yogurt is made with whole milk. Most grocery store varieties are corn syrup and starch concoctions. Even the "better" brands that are sweetened only with fruit (like Cascade Fresh) still have a bunch of weird stuff in them... non-fat milk, low-fat milk, thickeners and preservatives and the like. My favorite yogurt is Fage, it's ingredients are only whole milk and cream. I'm not a fan of plain yogurt with it's sour/tang flavor, so I add my own fruit and stevia to give it the texture and flavor I love. It is drained Greek yogurt, so it is very thick, rich, creamy and naturally low-carb. I won't even consider buying regular grocery store yogurts any more, I'm now a yogurt snob!!! Having a good day and finding it easy to stay on course. I am committed to gettin it done! Angela, I too love the post that you wrote. I am really committed this way around to eat as clean as possible, not make excuses for myself and to stay focused. I want to be healthy and to feel way better about myself.
I have an interview coming up and I am so excited. It would mean a relocation to another state, and I am ready! I hope to know in 2 weeks or so. This is the 3rd interview with 1 more to go. Have a great weekend and a safe holiday! Gayle |
