WOE: CALP
Start Date: March 3, 2008
Good morning,

Beccanancy, I have heard so many different interpretations of the CAD RM that they blow me away. My CAD book says to "eat a balanced diet" from each of the four basic groups that include dairy & milk products; meat, fish, & poultry; fruits & vegetables (as well as a salad); and breads & grains. I follow CALP because it says to begin your RM with a salad and then divide your plate into thirds including the same amount of protein, veggies, and carbs. Now how difficult is that? I wish you luck in finding a plan that works well for you!

Kate, great job on losing 6 lbs., KUTGW!

Tink, I really enjoyed your "Milo" story, thanks for sharing it with us.

Pamela, may I suggest you go to your local library and borrow one of the books. The list of veggies includes everything in the books but unfortunately it has a few veggies that are not on either CAD or CALP. Best wishes on getting your leg healed.

denese, I understand how liberating this WOE is compared to Atkins, enjoy!

Laurie, sorry to hear you went off plan but it sounds like you know what you are doing. The party sounded fun and Happy Belated Birthday to DD20.

iaKaren, CAD reads "Diet soda that has no fruit juice added is also acceptable. Read the label: if it contains more than four grams of carbohydrates per serving, avoid the drink except during your Reward Meal." Diet soda or any artificial sweetened drinks are not listed as a CM food on CALP at all, they are listed as a Carbohydrate Act-Alike. The reason the plans say to begin with a salad is to make sure you eat the salad instead of eating everything else first and not have any room left for it.

okmom, welcome! I, too, have issues with the scale. I was on this program two months before I weighed myself for the first time in over two years. Since I can not handle the ups and downs of the scale, I was not going to use it at all. I took my measurements and that was what I was going to work off of. Once my clothes began to get too big for me, my curiosity got the best of me, and I weighed myself. I have chosen to weigh and measure once a month to resolve my curiosity and to record my progress.

eok2008, welcome! This WOE has taught me how to control my insulin levels. I am in complete control of what I eat as long as I follow CALP. I eat when I am hungry, which is usually twice a day. I have accepted the fact that in order to remain in control, I must eat this way for the rest of my life. I guess what I am trying to say is that this is not a quick fix diet for me this time since I know that if I go off, I will go right back to my old eating habits and lose control all over again. Good luck on your journey and I hope you will share it with us!

LauraAnn, welcome! I am sure the ladies you are referring to will be happy to answer your question. I believe each and every one of us can join them as long as we put in the time and make the effort. Good luck to you!

Glendora, you go girl! May I say that you look really good in your new avatar but I already miss seeing your lovely face.

Hello to everyone else too!

I had a really busy day yesterday beginning with my dentist appointment. After getting some fillings in my mouth, I had an hour to spare before DD23 doctor appointment. My car needed a bath really bad so I pulled through the car wash to get it cleaned. The vacuums are available to paying customers so I spent forty five minutes using the vacuum on the carpet & seats. Theo, my dog, really loves the car and left dog hair on the seats when he jumped in through the open window.

DH and I completed our Bowflex workout last night and today is WATP day. I picked up some weights at WalMart and will try and use them for the first time today.

If anyone is interested, I started a blog that tells my story about this WOE and the link is included in my signature.

My menu for yesterday included:

CM: 2 cups of coffee

CM: Pork chop and asparagus w/mayo

RM: Salad w/ranch, cheeseburger on bun w/mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, & pickles, and green beans w/vinaigrette

I took my chromium and drank plenty of water.

Teri well now I am totally confused. In my book it says not to drink artificial sweeteners, only in the RM Meal...that it will cause an insulin spike.

Patty, I can understand your confusion because I find the CAD book to be full of contradictions. Under beverages it says that you can have diet soda but if it contains four or more grams of carbohydrates per serving to avoid it. Only two paragraphs below that statement it says "Any sugar substitute that you use must have no more than two carbohydrate grams per serving."

I am so thankful that I read CALP first because I can not see how anyone can be confused with beginning your RM with 2 cups of salad and then dividing your plate into thirds including the same amount of protein, veggies, and carbs. Balance is the key to CALP and it works for me because I will never deprive myself of anything I want, ever again, because I don't have to.

What works for one person may not work for another, but I am extremely happy I found exactly what works for me.

Teri that is great. I am glad that you found what works for you. I too love what I am doing and we eat a big salad just about every night. In between grilling our chicken for the week we will have something else and this really works good for me. I do find that I get hungrier the next day because salad just does not last me very long, but that is what my Honey loves, so that is what we have...

Just starting CAD

Hey, I am glad I found this thread. I actually did Atkins about 4 years ago and lost 40 lbs. Then I got pregnant and gained all that plus some and never lost. Then I got pregnant again and gained and haven't lost any since giving birth 8 months ago. I am 43 and heavier than I have ever been in my life. No energy, depressed and needing to change my eating and energy levels. I have 6 children and can't keep up with them.

I read the CAD book years ago but need to go purchase one today. I find Atkins too restricting with nursing a baby but feel this will work for me. I hope you ladies can answer all my questions and help keep me on track!

By the way what is CALP?

Hello ladies, how is everyone? I just read all of your postings and I'm realizing a couple of things about this diet and the different variations we all use. I'm thinking that the reason that they introduced starting with a salad and then the "balanced" RM was to discourage overeating during your reward meal. Which makes sense because it would be almost impossible to overeat during your reward meal if you divided it into thirds, protein, low carb veggies and high carb foods. Some of my fiends also say that when this diet was first released, you didn't have to include 2 cups of low carb veggies on your comlementary meals and you could snack on protein all day if you wanted, as long as the only time you had carbs and sweets was during your reward meal. So it's very true that you have to listen to your body and how it reacts to carbohydrates and tweak it the way that you feel comfortable. For now, I'm not balancing my reward meal, and I'm spreading my meals apart enough... like breakfast is at 9am, lunch at 1pm and dinner at 6pm, and it seems like my ups and downs on the scale are less far apart. I started averaging my daily weighings... because the ups and downs were making me crazy, and that made me feel better when I got on the scale and was up 2 pounds from the day before... so do not let that get you down!
Yesterday I had...
CM: Scrambled eggs and ham
CM: pork roast with swiss cheese and tomato sauce
RM: a bean and cheese burrito, 3 long john silver fried fish 1 piece of strawberry shortcake and 2 Dr. Peppers

Nothing is impossible when you believe in yourself! We can do this! =)

Enjoy life. Think of all the women who passed up dessert on the Titanic.

On your question about CALP, I will let the ones that follow this, tell you exactly what it is.
I do CAD myself...

Hi ladies!

Patty - that is great news about your weight loss! Glad to hear you are doing so well. It's wonderful!

Glendora - love your new avatar pic. I am not that coordinated! If you are curious to see what my twins and I look like, click on this link (or copy and paste it into your browser) Emandm_2008 - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Welcome Mom2, LauraAnn and eok2008 - this is a great woe. I joined this forum in May and I am still reading the old posts from this thread. It's very helpful to read them, and you get to know the ladies more!

Teri - I follow CAD and I also found the book contradictory in places. I am not that strict about things and it happens to work for me (not being as strict), but I think if I wasn't at my desired weight I would probably follow CALP. I love reading your menus and they are by far healthier than what I eat! lol

Mom2 - CALP is a more recent book the Hellers wrote. With their original book and plan, CAD, they said to eat 2 CM's (Atkins-like meals) and an RM, which was anything you wanted (within reason). SO you could have burgers and fries for example, or pancakes at your RM. With CALP they really stress balance for the RM, so with CALP you divide your plate into 1/3's and 1/3 is protein, 1/3 is low carb veggies and 1/3 is higher carb (ie. sweet potatoes or a piece of cake). If you go to Teri (Hoppinn's) blog she has sample menus in there as she follows CALP and I think Glamazon does as well. Some ladies on here (including myself, Patty, Shelagh, Oriana and Cindy) follow CAD and we only eat one RM meal but we eat whatever we want. We usually post our meals so you can take a peak. The great thing about this woe and this board is everyone is different and does the plan with their own personal tweaks. You will find what is best for you! GL!

LauraAnn - Cindy is away now or else she would respond (she lost over 100 pounds and does CAD one meal a day). I haven't seen Stephanie around for a few days, she also lost over 100 I believe. Re-read their old threads, they are super inspiring!

Okmom - hi and welcome. Did you post on some of the old CAD threads? Your name is familiar to me.

Laurie - i hear all the time how fast time flies once you have kids. I cannot believe my girls are 28-months! I remember when I brought them home from the hospital at 3 and 5 pounds (teeny, tiny little things) and now they are talking machines who are very independent and they are little girls, not so much babies (but they will always be my babies - heh heh!) Don't worry about being off plan, just get back on and you will do great!

Ok, so here's an example for those of you who were asking what happens to me during maintenance when I go off plan. Those of you may remember that Sunday I had two RM's due to events I couldn't really control. I always start craving when I have two and end up WAAAAYYYYY overeating that whole day. So I was up, as expected, but now it is Wed and I am right back to my maintenance weight of 115. So this plan works if you work it! lol

I will post my RM once I've eaten it!

Pam

momtocqpd, welcome! CALP is the Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program and is a more structured version of CAD. Balance is the key to CALP! On CALP, Your CM should include high fiber veggies as well as protein and your RM should begin w/two cups of salad and then include the same amount of protein, veggies, and carbs. The program is very simple, but I would suggest to anyone beginning either CAD or CALP to pick up the book at their local library and see if it will work for you. Good luck to you on any plan you choose!

Quick fly bye hello to all my friends - scale made me so happy this morning - 152 - even saw the 151.5 on there It's happening!

Patty - I've been having a protein snack like a hard boiled egg or a couple small pieces of chicken breast when I feel like that and it hasn't interfered at all and kept me feeling good on my clean RMs. I don't want you to get frustrated this time OR even worse, have the tummy/acid upset so please take care of your energy level - so excited for your loss!

Okay must get back to work - busy these days with new projects - will read and post to all later - welcome to anyone just coming on - we're just a busy group these days - love it!

It is 3 here too, so I will make it. I keep thinking well it won't hurt me to eat a piece of cheese, but I keep putting it off, so I think I will be ok.

Tink, I am taking Zantac which really helps me with the acid upset, so I think I will be ok. My energy level seems to be ok right now, too. Thanks...

Congrats Tink on the weight loss...

Ok, I made it to RM! Here's what I ate:

2 slices of Toppers ten topping pizza! Do you gals have Toppers where you live? We just discovered it within the last month and boy is it GOOD! Anyway, DH loves the ten topping one and when you pick it up most of the toppings fall off! It's like you have to eat it with a spoon and your hands! lol I probably had more like 2.5 slices since I tend to finish off what the girls don't eat (but they ate most of it)!

then I had Smart Ones fudge cake, Lindt chocolate and some mango. I am stuffed, and I mean really stuffed but very satisfied with my meal!

Well girls I am beyond stuffed. I ate more tonight to see, if it keeps me fuller tomorrow..

Menu:
Grilled Chicken Salad, Toast with Butter and Apple Butter, Potato Salad, Cantaloupe, Peach Cobbler and Ice Cream.... I never eat that much...

Tomorrow we are going to Shreveport for some fun. We will be going to the casinos and want to go to Bed Bath and Beyond. They have a cook wear set there that I want and I want to get a Pet Egg. Some girls on another thread said that the Pet Egg is great. Henry has a lot of trouble with calluses on his feet and a girl said the pet egg makes you real smooth...

Have a great evening...

Patty - I will have to check into this Pet Egg! I have never heard of it. I have runner's feet - need I say more? lol DH won't go near them as they are hard and calloused but you can't tell. To look at em you'd think my feet are very pretty. I always have a french pedicure and they are small and narrow. But underneath they feel like sandpaper!

Glendora - thanks for the compliments, you made me blush! lol This thread is so fast! I love it but it's hard to keep up. Once you know everyone better it will get easier!

Pamela - Have you ever visited Canada? I have distant relatives in New Zealand (my uncle's wife is from there). It's one of the places I have always wanted to visit. It's beautiful over there!
