Staying on plan
Right after I asked the protein shake question I knew better. The key to all diets is to follow the plan not try to modify it.
I have the original CAD book and had success on it in college, about 10 years ago. I read on the intro paget that CALP is the same as CAD without artificial sweeteners, gum, etc. Do people have greater weightloss success on this plan? And...another question How many meals do you usually eat? one CM? 2? or just the one reward meal/day? Do you eat the same number of meals every day? Yesterday was my first day back on CAD... I had 2 CMs and my RM yesterday, but today I am just having my RM and that is it. I was so busy today and not really starving so I decided to eat just 1 meal today... Really it is good for you to fast a meal or 2 a day, if you can. It detoxes your body and it is really good for you. There is a lot of healthy benefits in fasting at least 1 meal a day...
I do CAD where I eat whatever I want to in 1 meal, as long as, I eat it within 1 hr. I don't do CALP and the 3 portion thing. That is too much trouble for me...

Beccanancy, you'll find all kinds of variations on this board. Some people only eat one meal a day, like Cindy & Oriana (and Pam, I think). It's their reward meal and they don't necessarily balance it, so I guess it's more of the CAD type plan. Others follow the CALP book, which really emphasizes balanced meals and no sweet stuff except at reward meals. There are even further options that may enhance loss, such as avoiding artificial sweeteners and glutamates. It's really a YMMV type of thing. Try different things until you feel comfortable with your choices and with your weight loss. You'll do fine!
LaraSuzz, that recipe sounds really great! I didn't even like cauliflower until I started Atkins and tried fauxtatoes and Linda Sue's recipe for Just Like Twice Baked Potatoes. I also have made her recipe for Fried "Rice" many times and it's wonderful. For anyone new that isn't familiar with her site, check it out here: Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Home I'm excited that my first official weely weigh-in says I'm down three pounds! YAY! Now, if I can just stick with it and keep my eyes on my goal. Wii Fit is really going to help me there! Pam, I'm sorry it's so hard to find. I hope you'll be able to get it, cause it's great! Also, I LOVE the bowling. It made my shoulder, hip and arm sore for 2-3 days, but I'm fine now. Tennis is also fun, although I suck at it. My DD20 beats me at everything. That's nothing new, though. LOL! We finally got a tiny bit of rain here this afternoon. Thank goodness! We've had a typically hot, dry summer so far. I don't have much of a landscape, but some cannas I transplanted to another bed this spring are blooming. I've managed to keep some small shrubs alive that I planted earlier, too. The yard hasn't needed mowing in three weeks, which tells you something, doesn't it? We have a sprinkler system, but there's a leak in it right now and it's not usable. Oh, well. ![]() So, today I've had some creamy cauliflower/bacon soup for lunch (skipped breakfast), and a cheese stick for a snack. I have a nice roast in the oven and will probably have salad and green beans with it, followed by some grapes and some dark chocolate. MMMMmmmm....Only another hour or so to wait! ![]()

Beccanancy - I do one meal a day, my RM. If I am super hungry I will have a small CM. I do CAD which means my RM is not balanced. I do think CALP is healthier (more veggies etc), but I think both plans contribute to weight loss. I still use Splenda, I drink Diet Pepsi, I take meds outside of my RM so I definately don't follow CALP. When I first did this program (also ten years ago) I lost 15 pounds and at the begining my RM's were total binge-fests! It was like I thought I'd never see food again! lol But gradually, my mind started recognizing that I could eat whatever I wanted the next day, so my RM's became a lot more reasonable (but never balanced). I have maintained the same weight for the past 10 years, and I love the CAD woe!
Laurie - Congrats on the 3 pound loss! That is great news! KUTGW! I am totally bummed about the Wii Fit being sold out everywhere, but I guess it must be good! I will get it eventually, they are re-ordering them everywhere. My sister is looking too so we agreed that if I find it I buy one for her and vice versa! My RM ended up being: a huge bowl of rigatoni with tomato and meat sauce, 1/2 cup mixed veg (peas, corn, carrots etc), 1 cup fruit (pineapple, strawberries, canteloupe), Smart Ones double fudge cake and a lindt chocolate. Have any of you had the Smart Ones double fudge cake? I never buy "diet" foods (other than Diet Pepsi - lol) as I prefer to eat the real thing and I can on this plan. But I tried one at my sister's house and I loved it! I nuke them for 45 seconds and enjoy this warm, delicious fudge cake! Yum! Pam |

Shelagh - we were posting at the same time. That's the spirit! Your RM sounds great!
Larasuzz - I was the same with my RM's at first. It was a "I'm-never-going-to-eat-again-better-eat-everything-in-sight-now" kind of mentality! But my brain slowly realized that I would eat wonderful things the very next day, and my RM's got significantly smaller! I also started eating a CM in the day, but I slowly stopped being hungry for those, so things just sort of work naturally. Glad to hear you are liking this woe and thanks for the recipe. Sounds delish! Pam |

Oh my goodness...this thread moves SO fast....EmanEm and Tink, my little guys just turned 5 (the middle guy) and 2 (the "baby", at least to me
). I also have a 22-year-old, but he doesn't live with us.Tink: Jazz Fest: SFJAZZ - Presenter of the San Francisco Jazz Festival It's that one...but I'm not sure what days yet. I just know I'm hoping & praying that I get to go. DH's company is probably going to send him. If so, his ticket and accommodations will be paid for and then we will only have to pay for me. And then talk the grandparents into taking the kids for a couple days.Girls (I haven't seen any guys here--so I hope I'm not just making a sweeping statement there), I was disappointed in my eating today. I was OP, but I ate two CMs today instead of one, and I ate large quantities at my RM. Here's what I had: CM: 2 fried eggs CM: chicken salad with mayo, celery & a little onion (less than 2 tbsp.) RM: lettuce-wrapped cheeseburger with ketchup and onions; 2 large servings LC cole slaw: 1.5 pieces chocolate cake ; 2 homemade "skinny lattes" (iced decaf, milk and Splenda)I am afraid to get on the scale tomorrow. I don't know why I'm so hungry, although my TOM is next week and I do know I tend to get hungrier in the days before. Still...it's a disappointment. |

Beccanancy: Hi...
I usually eat twice a day. If I need to, I eat three meals. Today I had three meals (two CMs and one RM). But in general, it's one CM and one RM for me.Everyone is different, and different things work for different people, but the Hellers did give a rule of thumb for this as a jumping-off point. They said start with two CMs and one RM. If you're losing too quickly (more than 2 lbs. a week), add either another CM if you're losing drastic weight, or a CS (complimentary snack). If, OTOH, you don't see weight loss for a long time, as in weeks, you can go to one CM and one RM. Hope that wasn't too confusing. You'll find what works best for you...good luck! ETA: Don't let my stats scare you. I just started back onto CAD last week. Prior to that, I had lost 20 lbs. on CAD. |

Hi Everyone -
Good food day for me - lots of protein - in fact, mostly protein - sort of a Stillman's inspired day - I've been reading one of his books so trying some of his ideas on. Glendora, you're day looks fine - you may be pleasantly surprised - sometimes when I do a day with more food it shakes things up and the scale actually drops. It actually happened for me in Reno which I still can't figure out - ate off plan, more than usual and came home 1.5 lbs lighter. Even if it goes up, you know it will pop back down! I'm sleepy tonight, so that's it for me - see you all tomorrow -Amy

Hi everyone....I made it fine today with the RM...I did have a chinese buffet, and had 2 big plates of food and then desert...ya, I was full, but not too stuffed...
I made a meatloaf for tomorrows lunch, we'll be out camping....motorhome camping that is... I also have other stuff to go with it, and I'll post what I had later when we get back. I'm really tired tonight and I'm heading to bed, I did read everyone's posts and I'm so glad everyone is having a good time with the plan. I do one meal a day, I have had 2 cm's in the last year, and each time it made me crave and go off plan, so I'll just stick to one meal, I know I can depend on this to keep me slim and hunger free!!! ![]() I'll report back in a day or two, have a good night, girls!!!

Hi Everyone! Recovering from my busy weekend! We had a great visit with everyone but it's nice to have things quiet again. We had to move the picnic tables into the garage for lunch due to the weather but it cleared up so we could swim a little later!
Here's my favorite picture from the weekend! This is my brother and his little one! ![]() Stayed on plan despite the temptations. Not ready to do RMs now and then (still sticking with Atkins for now). Now I'm working on getting things back to normal and ready for the next party in 2 weeks!

Couple of questions.......when first starting CAD, how long before the scale might start going down?
With LC, everybody talks about ketosis. I am assuming that is not a player in CAD, since you can eat all the carbs you want in RM. However, if they all come within one hour, is it "tricking" the system into thinking not getting as many? Ketosis isn't in the index on CALP book, so thought I would ask. (I had that lousy taste in my mouth when woke up this morning, hence, the question....... |

Yes I do believe that you are still in Ketosis doing CAD, but maybe not as strong as you are when you do straight LC. I find that I have the Ketosis Breath at times too. With me doing 1 meal a day, I believe I am burning fat pretty fast. I have lost 3.6 lbs. in two days doing CAD this week... Hope this helps and I usually lose weight the very first day that I do it. I still think that it all depends on how many calories that you put in your body and how many you burn. I estimate that I had around 1,000 cal. yesterday and I dropped 2.6 lbs. last night.

Linda, adorable picture!
Patty, WOW, nice loss. Amy, nice loss too! Steadily downward. I am up a pound today. Back to two meals today instead of three. Today I have a ton of freelancing to do, which is good. In a few minutes I'm taking my kids to school so that will take up most of the morning. Busy day today. ![]() |

Good morning,
I don't have time for personals this morning, busy day ahead of me today! My plan for getting much house cleaning done yesterday did not happen. I did get a couple of loads of laundry finished but that was because I needed a bra to leave the house in, other than my sports bra. DS18 had to bring his car home by Sunday and unexpectedly brought a guest home with him. Since DS18 has no money for car insurance, his car can not be driven until he can afford to insure it. I did my WATP work out, worked in my house, did some laundry, and ate lunch before I took DS18 friend home. Since I was in town, I did some shopping at WalMart and stopped at the grocery store on my way home. The grocery store that I shopped at has the Haagen Dazs ice cream bars on sale for 2/$5 which is much cheaper than $4.19/box, so I bought 10 more boxes. My plans for today are to go back to town since I have a dentist appointment this morning. DD23 has a doctors appointment this afternoon and wants me to go with her. I will probably have a bit of time to blow between the two appointments so I will figure out what I will do when the time comes. Today is Bowflex so DH and I will get that done this evening. My menu for yesterday included: CM: 2 cups of coffee CM: Tri Tip and asparagus w/mayo RM: Salad w/ranch, cajun catfish, asparagus w/mayo, and sour dough french bread w/butter I took my chromium and drank plenty of water. |

Hopefully better tomorrow
So, I went from 142 to 145 in a day.
I'm keeping in mind that I've been subsisting on 1000 calories and under 100 carbs for about 18 months. The problem with that plan is that every slip-up results in a gain of 5 lbs...and it's triggering migraines. This diet seems much more manageable but I'm now 15 lbs higher than my goal weight. Has anyone switched from a lower carb/cal plan to this? How long did it take your body to stabilize? |

Hi girls, just a quick one for me, I wanted to address the questions real quick...
on keotosis....your not suppose to be in keotosis with this plan, however, if your not eating alot of carbs, then yes you can go in keotosis, but I beleive the Hellers don't mention it, because if your doing the RM with carbs, then you shouldn't be in it. I hope thats right, I'm just quesing here.... ![]() And if your going from low carb to this plan, yes you will go up in weight in the begining week or so, but it will come back down, once your body balances itself out, added carbs always puts water bloat on. I even get the bloat if my RM is all carbs...which alot of times it is. I don't worry about balancing, I just eat...it's less stressful for me that way. I hope that is somewhat of an answer for you, but as I say alot of that is just my 2 cents worth, I've never gotton the keotosis breath and have never checked with the sticks on this plan, I did check on Atkins though. I once did Atkins strict for 6 months and the sticks were dark purple and I did not lose one pound during this time...I couldn't figure it out until now....I was eating a whole bag of pork rinds everyday with hot sauce. Hmmm, maybe thats why?? Anyway, I'm off to go camping, thanks for the goodbye's, girls...I'll see you tomorrow night?! Patty....wowzers!!! Your doing great, hun!!! Good work!! Bye, girls!!! |
