I am having a very hard time adjusting my mind to realize that I am not obese any more. I still think I should be wearing plus sizes. So the photo below should convince me! They are size 22 elastic weight jeans. I had just bought a pair before I started lc in Dec. 2006. They were not tight but I needed them for the waist more than the legs. So here I am in one leg of those jeans! Yikes!

![]() Tops sounds like something I would like to try. Are they welcoming to people like me who only need to lose about 30-40 lbs? Also, are there fees in involved. Thanks for any info. Jeanie |

Hey Cleo. You have to be at goal to be State Queen which means you have to be a KOPS by the end of December of the previous year. Then you have to be the one with the most weight lost.

Jeanie - TOPS is a great organization. It stands for Take Off Pounds Sensibly. They do have a diet using the exchange system but they welcome you and let you do any plan you choose. It is $24 for national dues a year which entitles you to their magazine. I think there are 10 issues a year and they are very inspiring and informational. Then each chapter sets their own monthly dues. Ours are $3 a month but I think some chapters might be $5 or so. We also pay 10˘ a week and the best loser gets the dimes. It is very inexpensive and very supportive. I love love my group. I will go forever as it makes me accountable to weigh each week. You go into a room and the weight recorder is the only one who knows your weight. I think the only requirement at TOPS is that you should have 10 lbs. to lose when joining. You become a KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) when you reach goal. You have many ways to earn charms and win contests in TOPS. Each chapter makes up their own rules for those things. We earn a charm for each 10 lbs. we lose. You can find out where there is a chapter near you by clicking on this Chapters Near You
If you have any questions feel free to ask here or pm me. Good luck!

Jeanie, They let you visit for one time to see if you would like it. Then you can decide if you want to join. I think after meeting all this people at the state convention - that these people will be very friendly to you. They will really welcome you! Good luck and don't be scared!
![]() Just wanted to add if it is not a chapter that you like, there are always other chapters possibly close to you. |

So, like, do I have to lost that weight that year, or do I just win with 200+ pounds lost total even if it takes over a calendar year?
Could you see me as the Queen of Colorado? ![]() |

The 2007 international queen was from Oregon and she lost 217 lbs. ![]() |

She started at 366 and her goal was 150. So I was wrong, she lost 216! It took her 2 years. If you keep off the weight for 1 year you get a medallion for 100 lbs. lost and if you have 200 lbs. off you get an additional medallion with a real ruby on it!

Are you twisting my kneecaps?! I know you are. A ruby!
I had lost 16 by the time I joined TOPS, so I will have only lost 209 pounds. I might have to bump off the other fat chick I'm competing against. |

(Of course you know I'm totally laughing! I am so silly right now.)
I am taking this too off-topic. Thank you so much for the information! I was totally not sure about what it took to compete for any of the royalty. I was thinking I had to lose it all in one year, which freaked me out. Now I can git r done without the panic. Though there's a hefty lady in my group I might have to bump off so I can win. ![]() |

I joines a TOPS and I hate it. I turned in my membership card last night and almost sorry I did.
We live in a small town and I've been having trouble making friends so that's one of the reasons I wanted to join. That and the in person support I thought would be nice. Well, counting me, there are 4 members (and 2 of those members are at goal). Last night was my 3rd week and I really wanted to get to know the members. I asked the leader how much weight she had lost. She quickly changed the subject. The other lady was talking about a treadmill and I was telling her about mine and how much fun it is and she picked up a magazine like she didn't care so I shut up The leader gets literature in the mail and she reads it to us about people that lost a lot of weight (if I wanted to read inspiration stories about people I don't know, I could come on here ) Then she was sent stretching instructions so last night we got up and did some stretching. The meeting lasted about 25 minutes. The first day I was there I had told her that I lost 40 pounds last year and she said "That's great, You'll have to tell us how you did it". I was never asked about again and had the feeling no one cared anyway. I was just hoping for a little bit more opening up from the gals (especially considering the small group). I just discovered another tops group in the next town over. I'm going to go to that one next Tuesday and see if I like it better. Even though it's a 10 mile drive. Does it depend on the members or is this how all Tops meetings are run? |

That does not sound like a typical TOPS meeting. Our meetings are lots of fun. We are a very friendly group. We have grown since I joined in December 06. We now have 25 members. We are all very supportive of each other. We share tips, stories, etc. We usually have a program each week which we take turns presenting.
We sing songs, play games and have contests. I think the group you went to sounds horrible. I hope the next one is better. If you like the next one, you can get a transfer to that one and you don't have to get a new membership. Please feel free to pm me if you have any questions, etc. TOPS should be supportive and nothing like you described! Good luck on Tuesday. |

I posted this in the Main Lobby and someone told me about this thread. It was kind of old so wasn't sure if anyone was still around for this thread. I'll let you know how it goes on Tuesday. |

I see there is one in Island City and one in LaGrande also. You might have to try more than one. In a local town near me they have 3 chapters! In my small little town they have 2 chapters.
So I hope the next one is a good one. Let me know! |

Yes!! Good to see you here Beth. I love my TOPS as it keeps me accountable. I saw on the other thread that you found one that you liked after the first one was not so good. I am so glad you didn't give up on TOPS.

Last week at my TOPS meeting they announced the 2008 queen of the chapter. To be queen you have to have reached KOPS status during the previous year (2008). Three of us reached KOPS status in 2008. I was announced queen!! I was excited. Now when I go to SRD (State Recognition Days) in Eugene in April I will get to wear a crown when they introduce the chapter queens.
My official goal weight is 122 so my official weight loss is 113 lbs. Another lady lost 108 and the third lost 35 lbs. |

I don't think so unless I win state awards. But my chapter does want me to write my story and submit it to the magazine. We will see.

Hi guys,
Well I had my Tops meeting this morning. Today was my first official weigh in where I got to record a loss. I lost 4 pounds. I was also the biggest losser of the group. Yeah :-) I'm starting to enjoy the ladies but I still find the meetings exteremely boring. I tend to sit in the back so nobody sees me rolling my eyes LOL. Anyway, they were talking about signing up people to give talks. I'd kind of like to do it but, after getting the feel of the group, I'm not sure how well it would go over. I'm very confident in low carb but I'm not really sure where to start. Dianne, you said you gave talks at your group. What exactly did you talk about. I'm afraid these women might think I'm talking nutsy cookoo and label me a weirdo if I get up there and start telling them the oppisite of what they believe. What do you guys think? |
