The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet '08: New Year, New You

Here is the information needed to successfully and happily lose those unwanted pounds.

The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet ** CAD/CALP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello! Welcome to the thread for the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet!

There are many of us here at LCF who have found ongoing success with the CAD diet. This is the place to get to know us and hopefully JOIN US! The people here are wonderful and supportive. We love to answer questions and cheer you on!

If you are interested in this diet, I highly recommend getting the book and reading it thoroughly. I will explain the diet, but you really need to go straight to the source. They certainly explain much better than me!

This diet works because it controls your insulin release, which is related to how you store and use body fat. (See the book for all the scientific references!) You are allowed only three meals and one optional snack on CAD. This is how the insulin releases are controlled. Two of the meals are called “Complementary Meals” (CM’s) and the third is called a “Reward Meal” (RM.) There is no calorie counting, no carbohydrate counting… it is a very simple diet so none of that is necessary. If you follow the rules, everything falls into place.

CM’s are essentially very low carb meals. You divide your plate in half, and ½ your meal is protein, and the other ½ is low carb veggie. Simple. There is a specific list of veggies to choose from, called “crave –reducing” choices. The list is pretty extensive, but it does not include all low carb veggies. You are allowed to eat from this list, and that is all. If it’s not on the list, you don’t eat it. (But rest assured, there’s so much to choose from you won’t feel restricted.) It’s easy and flexible, it just needs to be balanced, protein & veggie. It is very much like an Atkins meal.

The optional snack is the same as the CM, just smaller.

An RM is a flexible meal you can have for your choice of Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. This makes it easy to plan for events like restaurant meals or parties. For the RM you begin your meal with a salad. Then you divide your plate into thirds. 1/3 is protein, 1/3 is low carb veggie, and that last 1/3 is ANYTHING YOU WANT. If it fits in that 1/3 balance, you can have it. Potato, Bread, Cake, Cookies, Candy, Noodles, Rice, whatever you feeling like having.

This does not give free license to pig out on carbs. It must be BALANCED. If you want more cake, you also have to take the same portions of chicken and green beans, too.

One more catch: This RM must be completed within a one hour time limit. This has everything to do with controlling the insulin release. This is very important. Also, you are not allowed to snack (aside from the optional complementary snack.) You eat three to four times a day, and that’s it. Believe it or not, this will not be a problem. Your meals should carry you easily to the next meal. It’s all about that insulin control.

Many people have the misconception that the RM is a 1-hour pig out all you can eat junk-a-thon. IT IS NOT. People also think that if they even have one taste of sugar they will binge into oblivion. THIS IS NOT TRUE. If you are true to the diet and stick to the 1/3 portion of carb, you will be just fine. You will be pleasantly surprised that the single slice of pie is enough, and you’re okay not going back for more and more like in the old days!

That’s it. The CALP diet is one step beyond this, it doesn’t allow any gum or mints or soda or artificial sweeteners. These release insulin the same as food, and will mess up what you are trying to do. You can have these items during your RM.

Overall this is a very flexible diet that fits well into the real world. The people here all have their own ways of making the diet work for them. Look at their losses! This WOE works wonders. (On your psyche, too! No deprivation!)

This thread is where all us CAD people hang out and discuss. Hopefully they will all come in and introduce themselves soon, tell you what works for them, how long they’ve been at it and how much they have lost.

LURKERS, PLEASE JOIN US! DON’T BE SHY!

If I have missed or misconstrued anything, please post!

Hello Lucille and Patty!

Patty, awesome job on losing 5 pounds this week! You will be at your goal in no time!! Would you be willing to post a sample menu of what you've been eating? I'm just curious, and looking for some new CM meal ideas! Thanks.

Lucille, wow you are doing great too with your 3 pound loss this week. Keep up the good work!

So far today has been good for me. I had my breakfast which was a veggie and cheese omelet.
No change on the scale this morning, but that's okay. At least I maintained! I think today I need to get some housecleaning done, lol. And there are some dishes in the sink that need attending to.
SO I will be popping in and out of here too like Patty.

Have a great CAD day everyone!

I just wanted to pop back in here and share this with you all, its my journal entry for today...I thought it may be helpful for someone else having a tough time:

================================
4th day on CAD and still staying strong. Although I have to admit, it hasn't been hard for me really! At least not yet. There was a time two nights ago where I really wanted to eat something bad before bed, but instead I went upstairs and watched a little tv with DH. Because i knew if I cheated it would turn into an all out carb fest binge, then I would feel bad and wouldn't have had that 2.5 pound loss! I was trying to tell myself I could go off plan that night and start again in the morning That has always been my problem, rationalizing it by saying "oh I can start again tomorrow, I just need one last time to eat what i want". Thats how I got to be 260+ pounds! I also remembered that I COULD have what I wanted, I just had to wait 19 more hours until my next reward meal! So thats how I coped. I basically had to talk myself down.
But for once in my life, I didn't cave to my addictions! And for that, I am proud of myself.

================================

Just so you all know, my journal is on the journals board here at LCF. I am putting the link to it in my signature line if anyone ever wants to take a peak!

Hi everyone! You're doing great, MommaPatty and Lucille! Keep up the great work! Andrea, good job on starting a new thread! And I read your journal entry -- you sound exactly the way I sounded when I first started! But this time (yep, I tried many diets, many times) I bargained with myself, telling myself "give it a week, and see what happens." Well, a week showed a loss, so I gave myself another week, and so on...And I kept asking myself, what were my alternatives? My doctor was ready to start the proceedings for weight loss surgery (but I wasn't ready), and I wasn't getting any younger, so I just kept going. I am so thankful to God everyday!

Have a good day, all, and I'll be back later...stay on plan...

I just wanted to say hello and that I think you ladies are doing wonderful! I have followed CAD in the past, but not for very long. I don't know why - I guess because I just always thought you had to do the Atkins way of low carbing to lose weight. However, I know now that there are so many different options on low carbing and it's great that we have choices and need to choose what is best for us!

Even though I don't follow CAD - it's always in the back of my mind though. I try to always start my dinner with a big salad and when I do eat good carbs, I try to balance it out with some protein.

Have a great day!

Good morning girls!! Wow such good losses today!!! You girls really inspire me and keep me going!! I too lost a whole pound this time, so I'm a happy camper!! I can't wait until my WTPA tapes come, there are five of them and a rubber band. I do have Leslie's other tapes...1 mile...3 mile ones, so this should be good. I do, do my bike every night and just wanted to increase that part. I need to do some arm ones though, or I'll have to get those fixed too!!

I'm having spagetti and cheese crisp, pumkinn bread/butter, fudge. drink/braggs.

Yesterday I forgot to mention that I had pumkin bread/butter with my RM.

Andrea, thanks for getting us started!! You sound like you know your way around a computer? Can you help me with my pictures if I send them to you?! I am so computer dumb, and I would love to post some new ones, maybe put one in my avi pic, I would love a change. Let me know o.k.? Thanks.
Andrea, you are doing fantastic in your first week, good going and good going on fighting those mind demons!! I had to fight those in the beginning too and trust me, they do go away once you stablize your blood sugars and the cravings go away too. Welcome hun, to the wonderful world of CAD!!!!

Patty, you doing so good, you go girl!! Your on a roll....keep up the great work!!

O.k., I started my meds last night, so I'm crossing my fingers they won't mess with me!!

Have a good cad day girls!!!

Hi Flower75! Thanks for stopping in! I appreciate the encouragement. For awhile I thought Atkins was the only way to really lose weight low carb too, I tried it a few times and could never stick with it. I know it works for many people, but it was not the right plan for me. I thank God every day I found CAD, and LCF!!

Hi Stephanie! That is great that you were able to break through that psychological barrier, and not having to go to the extreme and get WLS. But you know you said you would give it a week and see if you had a loss, and then you did so you kept on going? You probably already know, but I just wanted to remind you that sometimes you may not lose weight consistently the further you get into weight loss. There may be some weeks you don't lose at all, and you shouldn't get discouraged. Sometimes the body just needs time to adjust! Have you had any "stalls" since you started, or have you been losing every week? Just curious because some people have stalls, and some don't.

Cindy, sure I can help you with your pictures! Just let me know what you want me to do with them. If you want a new avi pic it is quite easy. Are they on your computer right now? If they are, you can upload one of them to LCF. Just tell me what you're having trouble with and I will be more than happy to help! Thanks too for the awesome encouragement. I shut those mind demons up real good I can't wait until they go away. And let me just say, now you have given me a hankerin' for some pumpkin bread!! Sounds so yummy. I think I may make some this weekend.
Maybe some banana bread too For my RM's of course!!

Hi flower75 -- it looks like you've found a plan that's working for you -- congratulations! And feel free to post here, this is a great bunch of people here!

I've definitely hit some stalls on my way, Andrea, and boy do they ever frustrate me! I actually lost the first 50 pounds, believe it or not, without any exercise. But once I plateaued there, I added daily walks in, and the weight loss started again (slowly, but surely ). This plan is very flexible and forgiving, and that's one of the things that I love about it.

Cindy, my friend, you are doing so well!! Good for you!! You'll be at your goal in no time! Keep it up!

I've got some more things to get done, so I'll check back in later with you all...

WTG, girls on the losses.

I am about to get to the point of eating one meal a day like Cindy. Yesterday I had 1 oz. of cheese and then for my reward meal, I had a Grilled Chicken Sandwich on Whole Fiber Bread, a baked potato with Butter, and Lime Sherbet. Today I haven't eaten anything at all yet, so I may just go until dinner...

I'm not saying what you are doing is wrong, but I am just curious as to why you feel you may need to only eat one meal a day? Sorry if you already talked about this before, but remember I'm new so I may have missed it! Sound like you are losing well though eating your CM's too, you said you lost 5 pounds this past week right? Or do you think your meds are messing with you?

Andrea I'm not la.lady but if you recall, Rachel Heller only ate one meal when she discovered CAD. There is also a thread on Intermittent Fasting which some folks only eat one meal a day. I firmly believe that certain things work better for each individual. For Cindy/Coxbowen the one meal a day has worked very well for her. Cindy has been my inspiration. I don't follow CAD daily because right now I believe very low carb with high fat/IF is the easiest way for me to get to my goal. I do CAD on special occasions, vacations and will CAD on maintenance.

Thanks Yes, I do remember Dr. Heller lost her weight by eating one meal a day and realize for some people it works. I was just curious as to why Patty felt SHE specifically may need to go down to one meal a day because she has been losing weight rather well eating more than one meal a day, that's all.

Hi Andrea I don't know Patty's reasons for 1 meal a day. Many people are into some form of Intermittent Fasting for health reasons, longevity. The theory is that giving your digestive processes a rest for x amount of hours per day is a healthy alternative to eating throughout the day. Cindy & Rachel Heller have inspired many folks to try 1 meal a day. For me it's a comfortable way of eating. Occasionally I may have a small snack within my 5 hour eating window.

Hi, Barb! Nice to see you!!
I think I know why, it's because when she leveled her blood sugars, she naturally wasn't hungry anymore, so her meals are getting fewer apart naturaly, so she is automaticly going towards one meal. I did two meals last year and had some cravings still, so this year when I started back, I went straight to one meal. I had done a one meal here and there last year, so I knew that I could do it without problems. Ans I'm so glad I did, it's been a miricale for me!!! Not only with losing the weight, but with the hunger and cravings have totaly vanished!! It's wonderful... I can eat anything without worry, am I gonna go up on the scale because I had an extra piece of bread?....No worries..

Andrea, good questions hun, keep 'em comming!!

Finally here! We lost internet connection yesterday when a tornado touched down not to far from us! We are fine, no damage but so many lost their homes, it's so sad. Thankfully no one was seriously injured.

I've stuck to plan so I'm happy about that. Still need to workout today but wanted to check in everywhere first!
