Jillian Michaels

Just wondering if anyone has tried Jillian Michaels plan? I've seen her books (not bought any), but recently checked out her site. She uses/offers three different plans based on the answers to the questions you fill out. "Oxidizers" fast, slow, balanced. I came up with balanced for myself and it sounds like the Zone Diet (only not low fat). Also suggest 1200 calories a day, I'm 5'2, 46 year old female.

I keep falling off plan with Atkins and thought maybe this might be the route to go to get down to my ultimate weight of 125. I have lost a good amount of weight since starting in July of '07.... 202 started/now 155- unless I binge, then up 2 pounds, of course!

Help or suggestions or constructive criticism welcomed!

Hi Deb, Congratulations on your wonderful weight loss, WTG
The suggestion I have for you is something I will be trying myself & that is to up the good fats. On Livin'LaVidaLowCarb -lowcarbdiscussion forum many people are doing this with great success. There's also a EFGT (Eat fat get thin) thread on this forum. Barry Groves is the author of the book. I don't follow EFGT exactly because I don't agree with his carb allowance and hate to count everything. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
I am doing Intermittent Fasting/FAST-5 with low carbs/whole foods most of the time/foods without all the additives. Now I will try to incorporate more good fats into my eating plan. I also just discovered that when I leave out the splenda I lose faster. I was overdoing it during the holidays with too many lc treats.
Barbara
P.S. I also live in Central FL, Altamonte Springs

I joined her site, and I find it motivational. I, too, am a balanced oxidizer, although I am not sure how much that matters.

If you are just wanting to lose weight, then high protein or high fat can get you there. However, if you're looking for health and weight loss, a plant-based diet is best. Choose whatever meets your needs.

I appreciate the positive reinforcement! I see from your stats that we're close to both starting and ending weight! I would be closer to goal if I didn't keep falling off plan. I tend to be an emotional eater and that makes it hard, too. I seem to have been struggling since the holidays started, maybe now I can get refocused.

I do have a few questions for you. You mentioned Splenda causing you to possibly stall or slow you down. I don't use a lot separately, but daily I have a large mug of Starbucks sweetened with 6 tablespoons of sugar free International cafe full fat liquid creamer. It's my one indulgence that I have daily. Do you think that's too much splenda?

My second question is "Ragdoll"... do you have Ragdoll cats? They are beautiful and I am a cat person, so I had to ask!

I've never been to Altamonte Springs, but hear it's very nice. My husband and I moved to Ocala a little more than two years ago. It's an interesting mix of northern feel w/o the cold (most of the time) ... except for our recent cold snap! We moved from Sarasota where we lived for over twenty years. We're still adjusting and need to explore this area of Florida a little more. Dare I say, I will wait until spring when the roads will be clear of our tourists. Don't mind the "snowbirds" though, they at least know how to get around the crazy roads here in the state!

I will try your other suggestions, as well. I've seen the EFGT forum here and relly need to read a little more in depth. I'll check out the other forum/discussion area. It's been months since I've been on that site. The one thing I keep learning is that every time I up my carbs, my cravings get out of control. I think this is why I'm so afraid to try new things, seems like I can't stop once I add something back in. I guess it is a learning experience!

Well, have to go for now, but look forward to hearing from you again. Feel free to PM me if you'd like. I'd love to have a "buddy" to chat with!

As you can tell, I'm struggling to find not only a method to continue losing this weight, but also a lifetime plan/WOE. Still not sure if Atkins will do it for me, so I continue to learn.

I appreciate your feedback and wonder if you would let me know what kind of menu suggestions you would make for a plant based diet. I've tried vegetarian in the past, but never seemed to be able to stick to it. I like meat, eggs, dairy, etc. and know I would not give them up permanently. Would love to have more variety! Would it still be low carb, but with enough protein?

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!

Debbie

P.S. I also follow the CAD thread. One of the ladies there has had good weight losses by eating just one meal a day but she eats the meal in one hour and usually has whatever she feels like eating. Today she posted about her weight loss journey. I only do the CAD Reward Meal when I'm going out to dinner or for a special occasion. I just don't think eating whatever I want is the right path for me since I think I would abuse it if I did it every day and before I know it I would be totally off plan. But it something you may want to check out.

Well, what I know and what I do are two different stories a lot of the time. It is so much easier to know what to do than the actual doing it. If that weren't the case, we'd all be walking health and live to 150.

What is plant-based? It is getting most of your caloric intake from fruits, vegetables, and berries. Also, include beans, lentils, and good fats like 1/2 avocado or 1 oz nuts daily. Throw in a potato on occasion, too. What it isn't is products that are animals, refined, contain sugar, or processed.

After saying that, I am with you and not ready to go all the way forever because I love cheese and chicken wings, but it is so good for our health and the weight falls off. I have dropped 9.8 pounds since Jan 1 (mind you I gained a lot in 2007 because I gave up caring about me after losing mom). Dr. Fuhrman who has a book Eat to Live suggests the 90% rule after following this plan for 6 weeks. Meaning, 90% of our calories come from these healthy foods, and the other 10% of calories may come from other sources. No, it is not low carb. From FitDay, I am consuming about 55% carbs, 30% fat, and 15% protein.

I don't understand why you're at a low-carb forum. There is ample scientific and anecdotal evidence to disprove your contention that Fuhrman's plan is a healthier way to eat. To get 55% of your calories from carbs, you must be eating a lot of grains/rice/lentils, etc. There is no evidence that you gain anything of nutritional value from eating these foods. And if you're carb sensitive, i.e. insulin resistant, you could find yourself on a viscious roller-coaster of sugar highs/lows. I gained a whole bunch of weight eating this way and never got my blood sugars under good control. I also exercised a lot and could not gain muscle mass. I believe I wasn't feeding my body enough protein to build muscle. Anyway, for health reasons, I will never eat this way again. YMMV.
