I did Medifast recently and it is amazing if you can tolerate the hunger. I lost a lot and very consistently. Eventually the hunger got the best of me though. I can't stand to be hungry. I think if I would've had the discipline to not cheat that I would not have gotten so hungry because I would've stayed in ketosis. Once you get past day 3 or 4 it is smooth sailing since you will be in blazing ketosis. One thing I did was replace the bars with low-carb bars. Theirs are full of sugar and I'm sugar sensitive so it would set me off with cravings.

Good luck! It is BY FAR the quickest way I've ever found to lose weight. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Thanks for the pm's ladies!!

Trolly, I'm hoping I can deal with the hunger I haven't ordered any bars yet so thanks for the heads up! I might take you up on your pm offer in the near future.

Couple more things I thought I would mention. They have nutritionists that are very responsive to any questions you have. Usually they would get back to me (email) within the day. They also have a website like this one where you can connect with others doing MF. Um, what else? I think you can supplement with buillon (sp?). Get some of those cubes you dissolve in water because it really helps to have a big mug of that when you're starving.

I would just like to say this. I know of two very public successes on liquid diets who then transitioned to Atkins AFTER they lost their weight. One was Gov. (and presidential candidate) Mike Huckabee who did a liquid diet program through the University of Arkansas and lost over 100 lbs. before going on Atkins for maintenance. The other is Dr. Nick Yphantides who wrote MY BIG FAT GREEK DIET. He lost over 150 lbs. on Optifast and then also went on Atkins for maintenance. I read both their books.

I'm reviving this thread because I have decided to to do Medifast. I placed an order and recieved it 2 days later. It is low carb (less than 65 carbs/day) although not as low as Atkins Induction. You eat 5 Medifast meals a day (shakes, puddings, soups, oatmeal & scrambled eggs) plus one lean & green meal (lean meat and low carb veggies). So far I have lost 5 lbs. in the first 3 days!

Hey Fluffy! I'm still going strong too. Tomorrow will make a week and so far I'm down about 6 pounds. I didn't lose anything for 3 days in a row, probably because I ate dinner out twice in those 3 days. I stayed on plan as well as I could though. I'm not finding it hard to stick to anymore either. The first three days were pretty rough for me, but it's gotten much better now.

Keep me posted on how you're doing! Good luck.

Great to hear from you. I am looking at Medifast as a diet not a WOL and that makes it MUCH easier, because I know its temporary. Then after I get to goal I can transition into Maintenance for my WOE/WOL.

Congrats on your weight loss!

p.s. Here is a recipe you might like.

Medifast Refrigerator Fudge

2 packages Medifast chocolate pudding
2 packages Medifast hot cocoa mix
2 Tbs. water
1 Tbs. sugar free flavoring (I used Da Vinci German Chocolate, but you can use vanilla or anything else you like)
1 tsp. soft (but not melted) margarine

Mix everything together, adding more liquid if needed (the mixture should be thick, not runny at all, but not dry either). Pat into the bottom of a small pan. I used a 4" X4" corning microwave dish.
Refrigerate for at least 1 hour until set. Cut into 4 squares.

Each square equals 1 Medifast meal. I usually have one piece for a snack each day.

I was wondering if you could do Medifast and then transition to Atkins and if that would work, so I was happy to see your post. I did medifast over 6 years ago and lost weight quite easily, but didn't maintain. I've been doing Atkins since last March, dropped 25lbs, I'm happy with that. But I was thinking of doing Medifast again at the start of the year, and transitioning to Atkins as I roll along.

I like the quick weight loss with Medifast. I lost 10 lbs. in 2 weeks. Then the holidays came and I gained back 5 lb.

If a person just has a few lbs. (less than 50) to lose then I think Medifast is GREAT! However I have at least 100 lbs. to lose and I just don't think I can do it for the long haul. I have heard of several people doing Medifast or other similar meal replacement diets and then transitioning to Atkins or other low carb diets successfully. However, I am the type of person who gets bored very easily and unfortunately have become a serial dieter.
I need a way of eating I can stick to FOREVER. So far I haven't found that and am still looking. I will say this however. If you did Medifast 6 years ago, you will be happy to see they have added a lot more meal options. Another similar diet you might want to check out is the New Lifestyles Diet. You can either google it or go to Liquid Diet Discussion Board. It has even MORE meal options and is cheaper or you can go to Nashua Nutrition online and buy all your meal replacements separately. That is the cheapest option of all. Hope this helps.

p.s. I am staying on Medifast until I run out and have to re-order. After that I dunno.

Fluffybear, I did Optifast a number of years ago under a doctor's supervision. They only had shakes at that time. It was 5 shakes a day, each 80 calories if I remember right. Plus I had one cup of salad greens with 1 tsp olive oil a day. The good thing was that after the first few days I was never hungery and I did lose fast. About 4 pounds a week for a total of 80 pounds. The bad news is that like you, I am a serial dieter and the weight came back on over the next year. I have decided that it's better to go with real food, but like you, have not found exactly the way of eating that I can stick to forever. Low carb has gotten me from a high of 255 a few years ago to 169, but I do get bored with it and am still struggling to get to goal. This year, I am going to try adding some fasting days with the hope that I will be able to eat a few more fruits and other carbs that I am missing on the days that I do eat. Sad to say, I think for many of us, this will be a never ending battle. Sure hope you stumble on the answer that's right for you.

bumping to see how everyone is doing or going to do on it.....

I'm still LC'bing, but medifast is always in the back of my head, should I do it or not do it. I did lose 35lbs about 6years ago on it, fairly quickly.

Looking forward to reading your posts, maybe you could post daily to let us know how you are feeling and results? Thanks and good luck!!

I have thought about doing this in the past--maybe use my own food though. It looks like the 5 meals are all 100 calories each.

You could do that with nonfat yogurt, fruit, cream of wheat packets, protein shakes, soup and so on.

And then just have 7oz of protein and a salad at night.

I am trying some other stuff to lose these last few pounds first, but I just wanted to put that idea out there for anyone who wanted to do a medifast like plan without buying their food!

I'm starting today.

Here's my meal plan:

Breakfast - Coffee and peanut butter bar
Mid - morning - Medifast cappacino
Lunch - Maryland crab soup and bag of veggie snack crackers
Mid - afternoon - banana pudding

I haven't decided on the fifth meal or my lean and green yet. I'll probably have chicken and veggies for dinner and then either a shake or hot drink in the evening.

I think the hard part about just picking out 100 calorie meals on your own would be getting enough protein to make you feel full.

I spoke with a Medifast dietitian yesterday and she told me cals are 800-1000 and carbs are under 100. So, you could realistically build a plan for yourself using shakes and a dinner. If you use Atkins shakes you can have what would amount to a Reward Meal with higher carbs because the shakes are so low, and you would still be under 100 grams a day easily. You really don't have to have 5 meals a day and then the one at night because that doesn't necessarily work for everyone. Just depends. I think keeping the daily cal/carb total in the right neighborhood is the prime thing. My problem is that I have been having WAY too many cals/carbs for my RM and let's face it some of us have to be very careful. Let's see what happens and if necessary I will order from them.

Cheers!

So far so good with day one. The pudding was actually pretty good, the soup was okay but I really needed the crackers to make it feel like more of a meal. I also thought the cappuccino was good.

Dinner tonight is grilled chicken breast, fresh green beans and a salad with light dressing.

I've been a bit hungry today and I'm thinking it may help to split the lean and green between lunch and dinner. Maybe have a small salad with soup for lunch just so that it seems more like a meal.

WOE: Atkins---GO PATRIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is sounding very interesting me, however, I am not sure if I would be able to do it. It is nice to have that option to lose quickly and then maintain if needed. I am great at maintaining, I just need to get the initial weight off. I have a ton to lose, it would cost me a fortune to do Medifast. Then again, it would be worth it to lose some of this weight! Good luck and keep us all posted!!!!

I decided on medifast because I really need to see some quick weight loss. I've started so many diets over the past year and seeing only a pound or less loss per week just made me want to go back to eating whatever I want.

I feel a little better this morning, just a slight headache.

I ended up having the cream of tomato soup last night. It was horrible. I was so disappointed because tomato soup in normally a favorite of mine. I need to check the Medifast boards to find out a better way to prepare it.

Today's menu is:

Breakfast - coffee and peanut butter bar
Mid morning - chocolate shake
Lunch - cream of broccoli soup w/ crackers

That's all I've decided on so far.

Mid-afternoon - Chili and a small salad
Dinner - pork tenderloin w/ broccoli
Evening - hot chocolate

When I first made the chili it really scared me. It looked horrible. I was too scared to even taste it so I added 1/4 cup of diced chili tomatoes and it turned out great. Far better than the tomato or broccoli soup. I need to figure out some way to make those better. I've read that some people make bread and chips out of the soups so maybe I'll try that.

I'm not quite as hungry today.
