The Beck Diet Solution: Let's Have A December to Remember!

I'm reading this excellent, helpful and very workable book, and would like to take advantage of the principles in it to have a December without any weight gain, where I am in control of my eating despite the numerous parties and food-pushers at work ("Whaddya mean, you don't want a slab of cake, Rach?" )

I am also looking for a diet coach, and will exchange coaching services with you, too. So, who's in? We can form a mini-group, have good-quality discussions and sail through the holiday season a month ahead of everyone who's making resolutions that will be forgotten by Valentine's Day.

I'm in. I have both the original book and the workbook. I started with the original book and kept getting stuck on day 5. I really need a kick in the pants and would love to do the whole book and have company while I'm doing it.

All right! This is gonna rock! I was reading the workbook on the way home, getting stared at on the subway (but who cares) and every page triggered some insight into my behaviour.

Let's plan to start on December 1, which will give Kim and me a chance to buy the book as well as the workbook, which I already have.

If anyone else wants to join in, they are most welcome. We'll get a Round-Robin going for diet coaching, so we aren't coaching the same one who's coaching us. I think this way we'll learn a lot more.

Thanks for the reminder. I actually bought this book a couple months ago, but have been so busy that I forgot I had it!

I recently read about this also and I'm interested! Anything that will get down to retraining my brain about food and eating sounds like where I need to go now. I just downloaded the audio book, but I don't have the workbook.

Yeah, gotta love those audio books!! I'm a member of Audible and totally love it, tho I get backed up on audio books like I do on the stacks of books I have piled up at my bedside (and in my living room, and in my office, and in the bathroom, and wherever I can pile 'em up!) I'm originally from Biloxi! I live across the Katrina-destroyed-newly-repaired bridge in O.S. the last 14 years or so. We are so happy that connection to Biloxi is back!

Hi! I really wanted to join in, but money's a little tight right now - can't get the book for awhile. But I'll definitely be lurking. Is there any way to post the daily exercises? I don't know if this is ok, so if it's not, that's ok too. I look forward to seeing how this works for everyone.

Kim - I'm sure we'll have to post the basics anyway to actually work the exercises but I'll let Violet Skye (is it Rachael?) respond about that since she is the ring leader.

I went ahead and ordered the workbook last night so I should have that before Saturday. I figured since I have the audiobook, I probably need the workbook. I was putting up Christmas decorations today so I listened through a good part of the audiobook. I'll restart on a day-by-day when we get going with the challenge. I had to laugh at myself though and thought I would share this with ya'll.

One of the first things Beck says we are to do is to "sit down when we eat," even if its a snack or a single bite of food, so that we are aware and in the moment of the fact that we ARE eating a snack or meal. So I'm in the house grabbing some more lights and find myself in the kitchen listening to this on the headphones, when I think, "oh, well, I'll have no problem with that. I ALWAYS sit down when I eat." Then I realized, that just as I'm thinking this, at that very moment, I am sticking a Vienna sausage in my mouth from a tin I just popped open, as I'm STANDING in the kitchen, because I missed lunch and I was trying to hurry and gobble something down to settle my growling stomach!!! Boy, oh boy, do I need this is what?

Hippiegirl,
I checked the book out at my library, then decided to buy it. Check your library to see if they have it, or if they can get it from another library. That would at least get you started. I made up my own workbook.

I'd like to join in with everyone. It's been an eyeopener for me.

Hi, everyone! I've been actually *working* at work, so I haven't been checking in as often. Hippiegirl, if you can't find the book at the library, it's no trouble for me to post the exercises. Or, if I buy the audio book, well, ya know...... In any case, the first week is all organizational and logistical stuff, so we can slog through it without much difficulty.

Has anyone given throught to their food plan? According to the book, we're supposed to have two of them - so we have a fallback/safety net. I'm doing Rob Thompson's Low Glycemic Load as Plan A and WW Core as Plan B. I know these plans inside, outside and upside-down. Core really seems like a good choice because one of its *core beliefs* (pun intended!) is to eat only till satisfied. This would jive well with the BDS.

Also, let's talk about finding coaches - do we coach from within the group, or get Real People that we know to do this? I am leaning towards the second, because then we have immediate accountability, and we would have to close up the group otherwise. I like the idea of new people joining us any time they'd like!

I'll be starting a weekly thread, beginning every Friday because, although we'd be technically starting on the Saturday, as it's the 1st of the month, weekends are slow and I'd like to get momentum rolling.

Any feedback?

I'm on day 20 right now - day 5 of the actually diet. I'm doing the Coconut Diet, with Atkins maintainance as my back up. I was doing really good, until yesterday. I made some almond butter fudge, and kept sneaking back for a little more - EATING IT STANDING UP- knowing I shouldn't. I don't know why I did that!

I have tried accountability coaches from friends before, but it has never worked for me. All my friends, husband included, don't give me the kick I need. They are more pat-me-on-the-back type. I know the book is big on forgiving yourself for slips, and I agree, but I need a little more than that sometimes - like feeling embarrassed maybe, but ready to get back on track. Does that make sense? I didn't answer your question though. I'm curious as to how to go about getting a good coach too.

Our plans are backwards .. I just started WW Core today and will have Low Glycemic Load as my 2nd choice.

I don't have a lot of support at home either. I've been on the diet rollercoaster for so long that those closest to me no longer believe me when I vow to lose weight. It's like in one ear and out the other. And when I've asked for help, friends and family do their best to sabatoge me. So for me, you guys are all I have.

Count me in.

Not only did I buy the book, but I bought the workbook and audio cd.

After eating healthy yesterday, but overeating so much at night (as a way of unwinding from work - truly bad habit), I realized how much I need cognitive therapy to change my behavior.

My husband said he'd be my "coach." I am starting today.

Joycelyn - I was always the same way. I wouldn't eat or would eat very little all day only to munch and snack my way through heaven knows how many calories in the evening. I pretty much ruined my metabolism and that behavior is where my weight came from. I've used everyone of these excuses so I'm also hoping this way of thinking will help me. I'm on day 6 today. That said, I don't know what happened to the thread here. We were supposed to start together on Sat. but nobody has posted since last week. In fact, I'd lost track of the thread until you posted this morning. So, I just decided to do this myself, altho using MY hubby would be a disaster! HE is a sabateour for me cuz he doesn't think I'm fat!! Hopefully the thread will revive for us ... otherwise we may be on our own.
