jezzie thank you for posting the recipe for pesto. I never even dreamt of using spinach instead of basil, which is really expensive where I live.

I'm going to make some real soon...

Newsflash.

A new Dr. Oz show on Oprah. Next Monday.
If my son picks that day to take me to the Bronx Zoo I'll cry real tears.

Just joking. It's been eighteen years since I've been to that zoo.
I can always watch the re-run.

Oprah is on ABC Sheila.
If you can't see it she always has a recap of her shows at her web site

I may luck out.
I think if he was planning to go on Monday he would have said so by now.

•Sad and Old: It Ain't So

We may lose our hair, not hear as well, and get more wrinkles -- but we'll have big smiles on our faces.

It turns out that growing older isn't such a drag. Time and time again, 70-year-olds report higher levels of happiness than 30-year-olds. Are you happy?

Better with Age

Why might older adults be happier? It could be that the kind of maturity that can only come with age allows people to keep an emotional even keel.

Or that with advancing years, we simply become more skilled at coping with our circumstances -- even those that are life changing. Whatever the reason, it's good news for our health.

•Three a Day Does Your Body Good

Oatmeal at breakfast, brown rice at lunch, and a slice of whole-wheat bread at dinner.

If these items made your menu today, you're well on your way to a reduced risk of dying from an inflammatory disease. Three servings of whole grains per day can slash your risk by more than 35 percent. What's an inflammatory disease, you ask?

The Common Thread

Inflammation. It's something that heart disease, diabetes, colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other conditions have in common. But researchers suspect that the phenols, beneficial plant substances, and vitamins in good-for-you whole grains may thwart the disease-causing oxidative stress that results from inflammation.

Also, Fabulous Fiber

Yet another reason to eat more whole grains: They're full of fiber, which can help you feel full longer (so you'll eat less) and can help keep your blood sugar levels steady and your digestive system on track.

RealAge Benefit: Choosing whole grains rather than processed grains can make your RealAge 1.2 years younger if you are a man and 2.3 years younger if you are a woman.

•All About YOU: Fit as a Fiddle?

To find out how your upper-body strength stacks up, try this quick test.

First, do light exercise (walking is a good choice) for 5 minutes. Next, hit the floor and do as many push-ups as you can (women can keep their knees on the floor, but men should do the standard kind.) Now, here's what your total count means.

Strength in Numbers

If you're a 30-year-old man, you should be able to do at least 35 push-ups. Subtract 5 from that total for every decade after age 30, until you're 70 years old.

For women over 30 years old, 45 push-ups (knees on the floor) should be doable (subtract 5 push-ups for every decade after age 30, until you're 80 years old).

If the mere thought of these numbers makes your muscles ache, you probably need to build your strength. But it won't take much.

Just 13 minutes of strength training every other day should get you closer to your target. Find full-body muscle builders in this workout.

More Fitness Measures

Strength is key to overall fitness, but you also need stamina and flexibility. To increase your stamina, walk 30 minutes every day, and do 21 minutes of stamina exercises three times a week.

You should ask your doctor if you are thinking of trying it.
It is not low carb.

I copy and paste what I read but I try to not make, or follow,
Bulletin Board 'medical' recommendations.

I am searching for a diet so I don't have to do Atkins(to strict for me) that is a very healthy diet. I have been reading and they have found that a diet high in fiber is very good for diabetics. I am thinking I might try it. I want to keep my blood sugar steady. I will ask my Doctor though.
I have bounced around on diets and am still searching for the one. I will try it and see how things go as I moniter my bs readings. I ordered the book also.
Thanks so much,
shrl

I am expermenting and kinda combining two diets, cad and you on a diet. I will know more when I get the book.
I am staying with low fat and fiber but spacing my eating a little difference. Breakfast is protein and vegies or salad, I am eating snacks, but low fat, protein and a little salad, small portions Then at dinner I have my fruits, vegies, a high fiber cereal, plus low fat protein like salmon or meat or chicken, milk or yogurt also low fat.
keeping my portions small.

What I like about this diet is that once you choose your pick and stick breakfast and lunch..the rest is really easy to follow. I've stuck with this meal plan longer than any other i've tried

Shrl you might want to check with your dietition about the you on a diet plan. I'm sure if you need to modify it, it should be really easy.

i'm not sure how much weight I've lost because I try to stay away from the scale, but I sure have a lot more energy and less temptation to cheat on this plan.

Since I finally remember to get some buckwheat honey I figured I'll re-post this one.

•Honey Bee Good

About to sweeten your tea with honey? What kind? It matters.

Until recently, if you asked a nutritionist about the pros and cons of, say, lightly processed "raw" sugar versus honey, table sugar, brown sugar, molasses, fructose, or maple syrup, you'd hear this exasperated chant:

"Sugar is sugar is sugar."

No longer. Several studies have found that buckwheat honey -- dark, rich, and malty -- has an unusual number of age-fighting antioxidants in addition to serious sweetening power.

Okay, we know you probably don't have a yellow-capped squeezy bear of buckwheat honey in your pantry. But the next time you're in a natural-foods grocery or specialty market, pick up a jar.

Although several types of honey have some antioxidant effects, researchers have pronounced buckwheat honey far and away the star.

And buckwheat itself (think pancake mixes, Japanese soba noodles) is being investigated as a "functional food," thanks both to its high levels of protein, fiber, and minerals, and its lab-tested ability to reduce body fat and cholesterol and even prevent gallstones.

So the next time you're making yourself a cuppa, try sweetening it with something that's got a lot more going for it than sugar's empty calories.

RealAge Benefit: Getting the right amount of antioxidants through diet or supplements can make your RealAge 6 years younger.

Fall Fitness Idea

Don't let that yard full of leaves go to waste. Research shows you can use it to get healthier.

Doing simple chores such as raking the leaves decreases blood pressure in people with hypertension or prehypertension for several hours, a recent study reveals. Don't skip your regular workout, however. Weekly stamina-building exercise is another key in blood pressure control.

High blood pressure endangers your heart, brain, blood vessels, kidneys, and eyes. Known as a "silent killer," high blood pressure has few or no symptoms, but it increases your risk for life-threatening cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke.

Regular exercise, weight control, and a healthy diet all are important for keeping blood pressure within the optimal range. Now, a new study suggests doing everyday chores may help reduce blood pressure, too.

In the study, people with hypertension who performed yard work or chores around the house decreased their systolic blood pressure by about 12.9 mm Hg for 8 hours, while people with prehypertension decreased systolic blood pressure by about 6 mm Hg for 6 hours.

RealAge Benefit: Keeping your blood pressure at 115/76 mm Hg can make your RealAge as much as 12 years younger.

•Winter Fruit Forecast

Adding pomegranates to your fruit bowl may protect your health on several fronts.

Pomegranates may inhibit the growth of breast and prostate cancer, improve blood vessel function, and protect the heart, preliminary results of several studies suggest. The fruit contains very high levels of polyphenol antioxidants, compounds that protect against a host of diseases.

Pomegranates are an apple-sized fruit with a thick red or purple skin. When a pomegranate is split open, there are hundreds of juicy seeds inside. Only the juicy seeds are edible. The sweet seeds can be eaten as is, sprinkled onto oatmeal or yogurt, or tossed into salads or savory recipes.

It is a winter fruit in the United States.

Pomegranate juice is another way to get your fill of pomegranate goodness year round. In a cell study, pomegranate extract inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells and induced cell death.

Pomegranate juice may retard the growth of prostate cancer as well. Other studies suggest drinking pomegranate juice improves arterial function, which in turn boosts heart health.

No one food can promise complete protection against any disease, however, so your best bet for protecting your health is to eat a varied diet full of fruits and vegetables, exercise at least 30 minutes on most days of the week, and stay on top of doctor-recommended health screenings.

RealAge Benefit: Eating a diverse diet that includes 4 servings of fruit per day can make your RealAge as much as 4 years younger.
