Hi everybody,
I managed to make it into work today and feel pretty good. I hope it lasts. I've had 3 bugs in 2 weeks and I'm pretty tired of feeling bad. I hope it's all behind me now and I can move into spring feeling good. Jem, I read your post on the old thread. Yes, be very careful with the weather. There's so many weird storms popping up all over you sure wouldn't want to get caught in one. As for tofu, I like it but I'm trying to avoid all soy products especially since I'm hypothyroid. I hope everyone is doing well,

Hi Sandy:
You know...sometimes coming back from a nice warm place to KS can really do "things" to your body, I think..So, maybe that's what is happening..Hope you are all better soon.. Jem: Yes, eww..on the tofu. Barry doesn't like "soy" and many other "experts" are down on it, too..Do the yogurt or eggs for protein..Remember you DO need to get in your 60 grams per day to keep your muscles.. Kim and Pink and MK: Hope you all are doing well.. We have a nice spring day here...60's..so my neighbor and I took a walk.. I was still at 140 this morning..Stuck like glue..but I'm going to watch my food intake..all week and see what happens..and pay attention to when I hit the satisfied mark. |

I took Bailey for a nice long walk too. I didn't power walk like usual but it was just too nice to stay in. I listened to my book as I walked. I Love It!!!

Here we go another great week ahead of us!
My 8 yr. old son has been home sick since Wednesday night. It started out as the flu and now he has strep throat and possibly broncitis. Yikes! He says I make a good nurse. He is unable to talk (lost his voice), so I gave him a little bell to ring when he needs me. He got a good laugh out of that, followed by coughing.I noticed that when my fat dips to low within the 60-70% range my weight goes up a few pounds. Isn't that funny, but when it is in the high 60's even 71% I was at my lowest weight of 147 just on Saturday. I am struggling to get the fat into me. I actually have a stomach ache right now because I made heavy whipping cream to go on top of my sf jello. I can get alot of fat in that way, but gess it is hard. I will have caesar dressing with dinner. But I do not eat mayo and butter, not often. Any ideas? I am just not hungry anymore. My calorie count is around 1000. Hope all is well! Kim ![]() |

Morning EFGTers. Back at work this morning trying to get in gear. Skiing was great yesterday but I forgot sunscreen and my face is RED and stinging today (bottom half - I have goggle lines
).I'm up a little from all the extras I've had since Friday. I'm glad to be back in a regular routine for awhile so I can see the scale going DOWN and not bouncing around like it did last week! Kim - I hope your son is better today. Pink - I had a problem with peanut butter one night myself. Jem - hopefully the weather will settle down some. We're all due for a break. Sandy - seems like vacations have a way of throwing us off sometimes. Glad you're feeling better. Carolyn - hang in there. We will reach our goal!! Well I have my trainer workout today and it's gonna be rough. I'm sore from skiing and TIRED today. But I've learned NOT to complain cause my trainer just pushes me that much harder. She put up a "NO WHINING" sign in our workout room and she means it! I just keep saying, "But I'm so good at it!" (in my best whiney voice).Have a great day everyone. --Lisa |

I am intrigued by the title of this forum! I googled it and found a website for Barry Groves. I think his book is self-published? I also see a book online called "Eat Fat, Look Thin". What plan are you following? Would you please tell me a little about the plan and what your typical menus are? Also, how does this differ from Atkins?
Thank you for your help! It looks like y'all are doing great. I've been following a very lowfat diet, and while I lose weight with it, I am not sure how healthy it is. Also whenever I get close to goal, I have big problems with binging. I know I need to add some good fats, but I'd like to know more. Thanks again! |

expresso!!I know what you mean about the binging. I did the same thing when I tried to eat lowfat. You're right about the Barry Groves book. It's an e-book and it's well worth the price. Eat Fat, Get Thin is not the same as "Eat Fat, Look Thin". I think Carolyn knows a lot about that so maybe she can help. The basic difference between EFGT and Atkins is that EFGT believes in controlling protein as well as carbs, since protein also causes an insulin response, although much less of one than carbs. So he recommends calculating your protein requirements and not going above that. So, the bulk of our calories would then come from fat, which causes ZERO insulin response, AND, as long as it's the right KINDS of fats it is very health promoting. Fat also is of course very satisfying so I've found I can lower my calories yet not feel hungry all the time. Carolyn can add some great info to this. I do highly recommend reading the book. I hope you join us!! --Lisa |

Oops! I forgot to say that it is, of course, a low carb, low fat diet that I currently follow--Stillman's QWL. It works, but it's not something I could do forever.

Thanks, Lisa! I am definitely interested. I hate buying another diet book(you know, I have my own library of diet/exercise books), but maybe this one is "The One".

Hi gang,
And welcome, Expresso..(love that stuff myself)..Lisa explained this very well..however, the very best thing is to get the ebook from Barry..It's around $9.00 American..But, basically, he wants you to watch the protein..and the KEY to this plan is figuring out how much protein you need to be healthy without going over and causing a glucose rise..So..basically, you take your LEAN BODY MASS..approximately 100 pounds for a medium sized woman, then multiply it by .6..which would equal 60 grams. That's it for the day..give or take a few grams. Now, don't worry about the fat..Just add it naturally..and eat lots of veggies..Keeping the fat within 60-70 percent of your daily caloric intake is a good idea..but it all depends on what works for you. Using fitday is a great tool..www.fitday.com just gives you an idea of what and how much you are eating. Kim: Yes, I hope your ds is better soon..I'm an empty-nester..so I don't get to wait on my kids anymore..LOLO...On upping the fat..how about cheese in between meals? Fat is hardest to digest, of course..Barry has said to spread it out during the day..He said that he even put butter on his cheese to up the fat content. Calorie count should be about 1200..if you can do it.. Lisa: Where was your sunscreen?? As the sun gets hotter, your little cute face needs protection..But, I remember spring skiing is the most fun of all.. I used to ski in NH..I lived in North Conway and we would carry our skis to the slope..I could walk there from my house.. Sandy: Hope things are going well with you and Bailey..I DID try to powerwalk on my treadmill this morning as opposed to sauntering..I could feel it in my thighs..which is a good thing, I think.. Pink: I remember Dr. A used to have macadamia butter and heavy cream mixed up for dessert..A perfect Barry dessert, huh? You know..I think that EFGetThin is really the way that Atkins meant his diet to be..really..He didn't want us to pig out on protein cuz he knew that 52 percent of it goes to glucose, while 100 percent of carbs go to glucose and only 10 percent of fat goes to glucose..He always talked about having a piece of meat the size of a deck of cards.NOT a huge chunk of beef.. Mary Kay: Where are you?? I'm sure more of you can add to Expresso's questions.. Hi Miss Jem.. ![]() |

![]() I lost a lb today by eating less protein and more fat. I use fitday every day. Can you give me samples of all of your menus?? I have 20 more lbs to lose and this is my second time around with Atkins. The first time I did GREAT with high calorie, high protein, lottsa fat ..blah blah. I had 2 steaks some nights for dinner and still lost weight. This time it seems I really do need to lower my overall calories. Id love to hang here with you guys and 'learn'. ![]()

Hi EFGT Friends,
Welcome Espresso and Michelle ![]() Dharma, again (think I said thiis on a main lobby thread) i LOVE your new avatar, it's very stunning and beautiful !!Carolyn and eveyone else, hope your days are going well ![]() Michelle, today I've eaten... B~ 1 eggs scrambled in butter mixed with 1/4 C cheddar, coffee with cream, and have of a medium apple L~ 1 steakum fried over lettuce, tomato + 1/4 cheddar + dressing... finished that off with a cup of strawberries and some home whipped cream my calories aren't very low usually, they range from 1800-2200; but I decided a while ago that I never want to do lower than 1600 on purpose, I like to think that this way I have trained my body to be able to eat more and maintain ![]()

Michelle. Please do join us. I agree with Carolyn that I believe Atkins was NOT meant to be a protein pig out diet because it DOES raise insulin. Eating higher fat is really a lot easier than you may think. Fat is so calorie dense that you don't have to add much to get the % up. Here's a typical day for me: B: 2 eggs fried in 1 tsp butter, 1 TB coconut oil melted in my coffee L: 3 oz. roast with 2 whole cooked carrots Snk: 1 1/2 cups broccoli & cauliflower with 1 tsp butter and 1 oz. swiss cheese melted on top; plus 1/2 small grapefruit D: 2 oz. chicken breast; 1 cup cabbage cooked in butter and bacon grease; 1 can green beans with 1 TB olive oil & vinegar (bean salad) Snk: 1 TB coconut oil melted in hot tea Calories: 1253 Fat: 88 gr; 52% Carbs: 50 gr; 15% Fiber: 19 gr (net carbs is 31 - this is lower than usual for me) Prot: 73 gr; 24% (a little high because it's workout day) This is very typical for me. As you can see I don't have to ingest large amounts of fat to get the grams up there. With all the vegetables I get plenty of fiber and stay satisfied. The coconut oil is an appetite suppressant too!! Also, I can't go TOO high in fat because I don't have a gallbladder. Some days I eat closer to 1400 calories if I'm hungrier. Mostly I eat the same things over and over but I don't get bored. I love eating lots of vegetables and a whole can of green beans at one time. I occasionally have a Mission low carb tortilla (NOT the soy kind) or fruit. I don't eat a lot of dairy fat because I've found it slows me down. I eat cheese and butter, but not cream cheese, sour cream, or heavy cream. They just don't agree with me. I believe coconut oil is healthier AND speeds up my metabolism. HTH!! |

I've ordered the e-book, so I should be receiving it soon. In the meantime, do you really lose weight eating like this or just maintain? If you do lose, what is the average weight loss?
I currently weigh 126, down from 155 this summer. However, I weighed 120 in October, then again in November, then again in December, then again in February. And I eat very low calorie, low fat, average protein. Usually when I'm dieting, my calories are under 600, my fat grams are under 15, my carbs ,only coffee, tea, and eggs, are under 10. Once I weighed 250plus, but that was many years ago. I lost weight on Atkins, but stalled for many years. Now I'm afraid to go back to Atkins, afraid that I'll gain. I'm afraid to do this as well, but I know that what I'm doing causes me to have cravings and "focus" on dieting too much. I think I'm ready for something better, something healthier! Please let me know about weight loss ! |

Dharma.. The menu you posted seems to me like very LITTLE FOOD!
I normally eat a much larger amoun tof food, especially breakfast. Sometimes Ill eat 2 lage eggs cooked in butter with two sausages and 1 pc cheese with coffee. The amount of chicken you eat for dinner also seems TINY to me. I can eat a 1/4 a chicken easily from the deli at one sitting! OR two large lambchops! (I spose Im still thinking about what Dr. Atkins wrote about eating "LIBERALLY" of these foods!) Its stuck in my head Im sure! Are you on miantanence? or..Pre maintenance ..? Im still at INDUCTION level carbs, doing it like the DANDR book suggests. The reason I havent gone UP the carb scale (by 5 carb increments) is that I feel my weightloss has been very little (5 lbs in a month) and Im still very satisfied with induction foods. My goal is to lose 20 more. Thanx for all of your responses. This is helpful ![]() Last edited by MichelleM : 03-06-2007 at 10:49 AM. |

Welcome to all the newbies and hello to everybody,
I've lost consistently but slowly on this WOE and I don't really limit my calories. I try to not pig out but I do eat til I'm satisfied. I also eat a little more protein than the book suggests but I do weight training and I just wasn't satisfied with the smaller amounts. I usually eat eggs, butter and sometimes sausage too with coffee and cream for breakfast and usually a half a grapefruit. Although, for Lent I gave up cream in my coffee so I have a few more weeks of no cream in the morning. Lunch, usually some kind of meat and a veggie with butter or salad with meat and dressing. Dinner, meat, veggies, butter. And for a snack a few almonds or berries with cream and sweetener. Fitday is the best way to figure your ratios. I love this WOE!! |

I am losing about 2 lbs a week right now. Once I lose 8 or so more lbs I'm gonna add some calories to slow down to 1 lb per week, until I get to maintenance. I will eat the same way I do now at maintenance, only a little more. Here's the other thing: and this is not meant to be a judgment or anything!! I don't believe I could ever be a vegetarian because my body would NOT work right. BUT, I believe I can still be more conscious of my eating as far as how it impacts others and the environment. So, I buy grass fed beef from a local farmer and eggs from free range chickens, etc. AND - I believe eating more protein than my body really needs is wasteful. Kinda like wasting water or energy. So, I really watch my protein portions and make up the difference in mounds of healthy vegetables. It works very well for me!!! Dr. Atkins did say "liberally" - but I think that was just during the induction phase while switching from burning carbs to burning fat for energy in order to make the transition easier. I used to believe I couldn't eat TOO much protein, but now I notice I feel sluggish when I eat more than I need. It's just a personal thing. Not trying to convert anyone!! ![]() |

I hear ya. Im motivated to TRY this new LOWER protein thang
![]() Ive been at induction level carbs for one month now. Im wondering when I should start going UP the carb ladder (adding the carbs in 5 carb increments)?? Ialso want this to be a program for LIFE. I prefer a slow weightloss and im not in any hurry. This time these last 20 lbs will come off for GOOD! Im very dedicated to this WOE. I appreciate you all bein here. Thanx again. |

Well Michelle, on EFGT there is no induction period. It's the same diet all the time.
Last time I did Atkins I decided to switch to BFFM for awhile. I added about 5 daily carbs each week for awhile, coming from under 20 a day, until I was eating over 100 or 150 some days. But I had to watch fat. I didn't like using all the protein powder just to get my protein up without increasing fat. And, I didn't lose much weight. It probably wouldn't been okay for me as a maintenance plan. It's designed to take of bodyfat primarily and works well for many people. Just not how I wanted to eat forever, ya know? Anyway, I would go ahead and start adding carbs, BUT only veggies at first. You may see a little water weight but it will be minimal if you decrease protein AT THE SAME TIME as you are upping carbs. I'm excited to see how it works for you!! |
