I've heard it is, but I really don't know. It might be more moderate carb than low carb.

Its lower carb but you have to balance everything out. I did it a few years ago, was always hungry and it was a pain. It does work, slower than Atkins and is very easy to cheat on.

thanks! I guess what I am looking for is a plan, where I can still have some fruit (not just berries) and also have some grains. I don't care about refined carbs at all.. I'm more interested in hearty grain breads, or brown rices.. or whole grain pastas.. perhaps 2 or 3 times a week..

I currently do atkins.. been doing atkins for almost 4 years.. and have struggled, and have never lost all my weight. partially because I get sooo bored. if I could add a bit of fruits, or grains and balance it in a way that I could still lose some weight.. I'd sure love it..

Would Southbeach work?

I don't know much about South Beach. It is lower carb also, includes fruit, whole grains from what I understand and is more low fat I think. You can check the Zone diet out on line - just google zone diet and go to Dr. Sears and when you get to the website you can go to getting started for some info. Maybe South Beach has basic info on line also. HTH

its "balanced" 40-30-30 40% from carbs (low glycemic), 30% from protein (lean protein), 30% from fats (monounsaturated). it's a good diet if u can stick with it. i lost steadily on it. the belief is that ur body must have the proper ratio at each meal of carbs/prot/fats in order to control insulin surges. u eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day.

it is based on the principle of "eicosonoids" the "superhormones" that regulate all other hormones in ur body...(i.e. gla, ala, epa, etc).

for me, it was very regimented. and the cals weren't very high (about 1200/day). that would be fine for some but as a 278.8 lb woman right now, i think 1200 is too low for calories for the short term.

All diets work. So long as you stick with them.

South beach sounds like the plan for you! After phase one, which is like Atkins induction (2 weeks), you can incorporate whole grains ( I think its 2 a day) and up to 3 fruits a day. Keep in mind in order to compensate for the higher carbs, you have to lower your fat intake.

Hi,

I've had experience with the Zone..very hard to follow..as each snack has to be totally balanced..Somersizing is a good plan..You can have whole grains, but just NO fat with them..Sugar Busters is another plan that allows whole grains and fruits.

And...you know Atkins allows that too...the whole grains and the fruit..if you diligently follow the Carb Ladder..and go through the process..Whole grains are the last thing to add..and apples/oranges are in the middle somewhere. I really never did this.., but this time I'm going to follow the Carb Ladder and find my CCL for Maintenance..

But, I think when you add the grains/other fruit, it is important to lower the fat..It's like a seesaw..Most people can't have it both ways..fat and grainy carbs..that's how
I got fat myself..LOL

This is SUCH a great point about Atkins that most people don't realize or forget!!! There are manyl Atkins Maintainers on this board who have successfully incorporated sweet potatoes, beans and fruit.
