Oils

I am trying to clean up my diet with regards to oils. No vegetable oils, soybean, rice bran, trans fat, etc.

I'm okay when I cook things at home (most of the time) but I find that even things like canned tuna have vegetable oils in them

Has anyone else given these oils the flick?? What are your biggest challenges?

I think soybean oil is the hardest to avoid. Luckly here in New York TransFats are illegal.
When buying canned fish I stick to things canned in water and not oil. When ever its canned in oil its either bad oils, or its olive oil and really expensive.

I love to cook in Ghee, coconut oil, and bacon fat (or tallow beef fat)
I love using olive and avocado oils on salads and in dressings.
I don't use veggie oils or transfats. (I stay away from soy, peanut, veggie, canola, safflower, cottonseed, corn, and anything hydrogonated)
Just read labels, and I often even stay away from roasted nuts because of the bad oils in them.

Yes, I got rid of them years ago.

Soybean oil is definitely the most difficult to avoid. It is, indeed, in almost everything. Sticking to mostly whole, unprocessed foods helps. Read the ingredients on everything you buy, even those you think you know won't contain added oil.

I also avoid roasted nuts. I buy raw/natural nuts only. I cook mostly with virgin coconut oil.

It really bugs me when a products oil is removed and replaced with some different oil.
You see alot with peanut butter but many other products do it as well. They remove the peanut oil and replace it with palm or sunflower oil.
I refuse to buy any product that does that. Yes, I pay more, but it's my way of making a statement.

avid, this is why i love my vitamix blender.. make my own nut butters.. and I add coconut oil to them because it makes them decident.. OMG YUM

Avid, I no longer eat peanuts but I used to just get Smuckers Organic peanut butter. It has added salt & that is all. I tried no salt & ended up salting my peanut butter...that was so weird!

I do eat the smuckers, and have for years. It's really good.
Lately I've been adding some finely ground sea salt. Seems like I'm adding salt to everything these days.
I've also been mixing in some tahini. Love the "zing" it gives to the peanut butter. But I was looking at Almond Butter in publix and they all had "no stir" on the label even though they also said "all natural" The No Stir means that the almond oil is replaced or supplemented with palm oil.
I won't buy it, so next stop will be the local health food store. I expect they will have almond butter that is simply ground up almonds, at least I hope so. I hate buying food products through the mail but I see netrition has a product that is simply raw almond butter. I'll get it there if I have to.

Costco and Trader Joe's carry Maranatha brand almond butter. The ones they carry require stirring so no added "foreign" oils, although palm oil is OK, just as is coconut oil.

I'd almost rather have the no-stir kind if the oil is palm oil, because it's such a messy job to stir the almond butter. DH forgets to put the jar back in the fridge and we have to stir it up all over again!

One tip for no-stir nut butters: Store them upside down in your cabinet until you're ready to open the jar for the first time. That way all the oil is at the bottom, and it's less messy to stir.

I actually pour off the separated oil.
It's fine untill the last inch or so which is a little dry. I sometimes add a little
evoo to moisten it up...delish

Tinned fish is my biggest bugbear because I love tinned fish and most of it comes in some un-named oil. I would happily pay for fish in olive oil if only I could get it.
And of course eating out you just have to grin and bear it - it's hard enough getting a low-carb meal without being fussy about the cooking oil! When I eat breakfast out I always have my eggs poached and my bacon and sausages grilled - won't do that at home - and if the mushrooms aren't cooked in butter I forgo them.

Do you have Sirena brand tuna in the US? Or Safcol pole caught tuna? They are both canned in olive oil.

I eat "tinned fish" almost every day at lunch. I have no trouble finding sardines, herring or mackerel in olive oil here but my favorite of all of them is Cole's brand Mackerel in olive oil. It is relatively expensive but the quality and taste make the price difference worthwhile, at least a couple days per week. If you cannot find it locally, you can get it online.
