SCOBYs

If you don't get any help with a SCOBY, you can grow your own pretty easily. All it takes is one bottle of store bought Kombucha. If I can do it, anybody can! For easy directions, do a google search for Food Renegade. When it brings up her website, you'll find the link to grow a SCOBY on the home page. I grew mine in just under 2 weeks. The key to remember is, don't try to grow the SCOBY and make the Kombucha at the same time. I did that the first time and it was a dismal failure. Start with a small amount of tea. Even though the initial SCOBY will be smaller, you will grow a bigger one if your first batch of Kombucha is in a bigger jar. (I use a 1 gallon jar) Just take the smaller SCOBY and a little of the tea and put it into the larger batch of Kombucha. Your new batch and new SCOBY should be ready in about 10-14 days, depending upon your taste. Food Renegade has directions for making the actual Kombucha on her home page also. I posted about my experiences on my blog (being conformed dot wordpress dot come) under "Kombucha SCOBY?" and "Kombucha Success". I love the homemade taste so much better than the store bought! Good luck!

AFAIK there aren't any live kombuchas on the market right now. They pulled all raw kombucha back in June.

I just checked GTs site and they're still off the market.

You'll need to start with a SCOBY from a friend.

The reformulated ones are being stocked. Our local health food store is carrying Vibranz. Guess it depends on where you live. GT's is a little slow in coming back.

But will the "reformulated" ones actually grow a scoby?

Over 1400 posts in a thread about kombucha (and ka-boom-cha!).

I missed the word "live" in Chelveston's post.

Very cool about the kefir grains.

Thanks, Faia, for the link to the Kombucha thread.
