I highly suggest going through Atkins program using whole foods, just not all foods. Most obese people have insulin resistance and any form of carbs can trigger cravings. You can explore higher carb options after you know how your body reacts.
I lost 100# without trying, just making low carb choices. Weight loss has never been my goal, trying to regain my health has always been my goal. |

Whole foods will always be better than a diet full of refined stuff. When it comes to carbs, if you're overweight/obese then you probably should keep them to a minimum unless the overweight was caused purely by psychologically-induced overeating and/or specific medications that have been discontinued. Then low-carb is still good but may not be necessary for successful and healthy weight loss.
I agree with Cindy - do both! In my experience, a whole-foods diet that isn't low-carb will hold my weight steady (at a higher one than I'm at now), and on low-carb I lost weight quickly. So junking the junk food did prevent weight gain, but to get to a good weight without starvation I needed low-carb. |

I think it depends on each individual persons particular metabolism. I have eaten healthy whole foods since my 20's, but did not have any problem becoming 100 lbs. overweight. The only bread I ate was Ezekiel bread, except an occasional pita. Love whole grains, yogurt, fruit....But many of the foods I love do not love me back! The only way I can lose weight is very low calorie which really dampens down my metabolism, or low carb. I will choose low carb any day. I am eating really good tasting food, not weighing or measuring portions, which I can live with.
My daughter has the same basic metabolism as me (and love for healthy carbs) but keeps her weight down with lots of exercise. She is a runner and very active. She can also gain weight rather quickly when unable to exercise. She would rather keep the exercise and eat most anything. |

Yes, you can gain weight if you overeat, be it whole foods or junk food. But I started "low carbing" over 10 years ago. It wasn't until I switched to a mostly whole food woe that I was able to achieve significant weight loss and keep it off for any real length of time. With over 125 lbs lost since March of last year, I credit my success to a healthy whole food woe.

Low(ER) carbing and whole foods is my route.. you dont need to be in ketosis to lose fat but for many it's great for appetite surpressing.

If you are IR, or remotely close to it, you must monitor your carbohydrate intake.
Yes, biochemical individuality will dictate your whole foods/dieting success. Now that being said, it can certainly be done without granis and fruit! There are plenty of people I know that are not lean but utilize a whole foods plan...... |

I can lose weight with whole foods as long as I exclude grains (gas & bloating). I seem to do ok with fruit but I usually have it with a slice of Irish cheese or some yogurt. I dont lose fast but I can average 2lbs a week which isnt bad IMO. If I eat grains of any sort it all comes screeching to a halt though. My body is just not wired for grains. I have a lot of weight to lose still so I try and keep my carbs as low as I can but I look forward to adding more veggies, nuts and fruit in later as I know already that I can maintain at a much higher carb level if they come from whole foods and I stay away from grains.
