Is there any reason I'd want to observe chicken butchering?

The local farm I get my chicken from invites customers to come & watch if we want. I really see no reason to do this and wonder if I'm missing something. I'm not squeamish so that is not an issue.

It sounds like they are butchered at a different location, too, because when you pick up a fresh chicken (not yet frozen) you go to a different location. Actually a different town.

I would say no. As long as they are not butchering in front of the rest of the flock, and doing it in a humane manner, I'd take their word for it. if they can't answer that, I'd look for another supplier. I have heard the cone is the most humane and gentle way to go.

Sounds pretty unappetizing! My husband use to have chickens (prior to having me) and he's told me several times he could never eat a chicken the same day he butchered them. Gotta love a sensitive man!

Thanks for the replies.

I am sure this is done in the most humane way. I've had a few good conversations with the owner & am certain that it is done humanely. I'm a wee bit curious but figure I can probably live without the experience.

lol @ not being able to eat a chicken the same day...

I'd likely stop eating any thing i saw once living then slaughtered, no matter how humane it was. I cant watching the animal planet when they have prey type shows.

I could do it and probably would................

I used to help my dad skin rabbits and squirrels and deer when we got back from hunting..........

We used to help with the fall slaughter of pigs and cows when I was a child growing up.

My grandma always said her mom would tell one of her 6 kids to go out back and grab a chicken and they would wring the neck and then dunk the chicken in boiling water so they could easily pluck the feathers...........

Then cut it open and gut it, cut the head off and a while later they would be eating fried chicken...........

Now, that is what you call fresh eating!!!!

I'm guessing that the reason they offer this "opportunity" is to witness that it is done humanely. I'd have to applaud them for that, but I personally would have no interest in viewing it. Death is death... no thank you!

A "local" creamer (25 miles from me) had chickens on sale for $8 a piece or so and they weighed around 6-8 lbs, I though man what a deal. Upon emailing them, I found out you bought them live and brought them home and butchered them yourself. I declined
