Natural mosquito repelent
I know I've heard you guys talk about this but now that we're going camping this weekend I can't think what it was. I think I've heard talk about coconut oil. Will just spreading it on your body work?
Thanks :-) |

I am interested in this too. I have horrible bites and more every day from the garden. At this point I am mixing vodka with citronella oil and pure vanilla. It works ok I think. I am going to do more experiments. I am one of those that can spray enough DEET on herself to get a new form of cancer and still get chewed alive. It simply does not work. I am using epsom salts, banana skins, comfry tea and tobacco juice on the bites and the combo almost works for drying them up. Oh Coconut oil too. I use it interally and externally....still getting bitten and it does not clear them up right away. If someone RAVES about a product working once then it might work for a few hours to take the itch out.....I am still working on it and hope to hear more responses.

Yeah there was a thread that someone started and she is in mosquito country, using CO and says she is not getting bit.
Of course there is speculation about body temperature and blood type having a factor in whether the mosquitos love you or not... I don't live in mosquito country so I can't say whether CO would be helpful in that regard, but we are having a flea issue and I am not getting bit like the rest of the family and I am the only one who uses (internally) CO so I would say, for me, CO is a good insect repellent.

Yah been told my blood type is a major factor. O-. It's meat or dairy too. As a vegan nothing bothered me and deer and squirrels did not fear me or run. Nor farm goats or any animals....Not to hijack my own post or anything ug.
I just started some garlic tincture....we'll see how that does. |

Health food stores but smell it first...I found it to be a bit strong, some people say that the brown listerine works too, in a spray bottle half listerine half water...

People recommend B1 intake. I'm trying it this year. So far, only one bite, and that from a mosquito indoors that was probably desparate.

Livinlarge, What I did was to put some straight apple cider vinegar on a sponge (organic, even) (though I'm sure it doesn't matter what type) and sponge over my dog's coat. Then I worked it into the fur a little with my fingers. I concentrated on his back, where the fleas hang out for the most part. Now, when I flea-comb him, there are very few. The vinegar smell went away by the time it was dry and seemed to make his coat softer! I think I will add a few drops of eucalyptus, per Fawn's suggestion, next time I do this. I also give the dog and cat "Program" to eliminate the next generation of fleas. I don't want to put the toxic stuff on them.

Make Your Own Natural Mosquito Repellent
Natural Mosquito Repellent Ingredients
If you are making large amounts of mosquito repellent, a good rule of thumb is to mix the repellent so it's 5-10% essential oil, so mix 1 part essential oil with 10-20 parts carrier oil or alcohol. For a smaller batch use: * 10-25 drops (total) of essential oils * 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil or alcohol The essential oils that work well against mosquitoes are: * cinnamon oil * lemon eucalyptus oil * citronella oil * castor oil Safe carrier oils and alcohols include: * olive oil * sunflower oil * any other cooking oil * witch hazel * vodka Natural Mosquito Repellent Recipe Mix the essential oil with the carrier oil or alcohol. Rub or spray the natural insect repellent onto skin or clothing, using care to avoid the sensitive eye area. You'll need to re-apply the natural product after about an hour or after swimming or exercise. Unused natural insect repellent may be stored in a dark bottle, away from heat or sunlight. I recently heard that equal parts of pure sugarfree vanilla extract and water in a spray bottle works. Some say vanilla on pulse points works, too.

I think coconut oil works for me. I use it after my shower every day. I went camping last week and didn't get a single bite.
