Question about nut labels
I have been looking for more raw nuts (past the raw almonds I already use) but am confused about some labeling. Some say they are raw quite clearly and some say roasted equally as clearly but some seem ambiguous. For instance, I bought walnuts. The bag says nothing about raw or roasted. The ingredients list is just walnuts. So what are they? Is there an assumption that I can make for nuts that are not clearly labeled?
thanks! |

Nut labeling huh? HAHHA Yah some have labeled me a ...oh never mind... I just totally loled over this title. However, I do not have anything constructive to add. I'd like to know as well. I assume they are roasted to retard spoilage but will wait for others to answer.

Sure did haha. I was told to get them in the shell to be sure but I think they might gas them or heat them or steam them, not sure...still waiting for someone who actually knows hehe.

I'd like to know too!
I wondered the same thing when I brought home a bag of walnuts and realized it didn't say raw or roasted (they definitely aren't roasted, they don't have that roasty flavor) but I can't tell if they've been steamed or chemically treated. They are from CA so I'd wager they are probably processed some way (like almonds are). ![]() |

I'd highly suggest you check out ebay for almonds straight from the farm. Not only are you getting large quantity at a good price but the main reason is they are not irradiated. Commercially sold almonds are now required to be pasteurized. I get mine every year from seller gaspare5491 - 20# shipped for $2.85# is $57 total - It's the cheaper less popular almond, but I don't see a difference - Nonpariel's the popular almond is sold by other growers on ebay also but for a higher price. I did verify with the grower to make sure these weren't pasteurized.
April 6, 2007 - Small-scale farmers, retailers, and consumers are outraged over a new federal regulation that will require all almonds grown in California to be sterilized with various “pasteurization” techniques. The rule, which the USDA quietly developed in response to outbreaks of Salmonella in 2001 and 2004, traced to raw almonds, mandates that all almonds undergo a sterilization process that includes chemical and/or high-temperature treatments. The only exemption to these new regulations will be ... small-scale growers who can sell truly raw almonds but only direct to the public Last edited by cindy_cfids; 07-03-2009 at 01:57 PM.. |

If you get nuts in the shell, do you need to worry about these things?
eta: oops, I'm still thinking of the other nut thread talking about irritation and sprays and whatnot. I guess this isn't really on topic ![]() |

I really don't know that what I wanted to know. Turns out nuts lower my blood sugar too much, like sweet potatoes and flax. I am still trying to get all that out of my system so for now I do not really need to worry about what they do to our nuts. I want to know though for the future if I ever go back to them.

I'm still stumped on this nut thing. I asked as the store I go to and she didn't know. There has to be some reason for this labeling issue. I just know I only want raw nuts and I don't think I should have to GUESS as to whether a nut is cooked or not. Grrrrr. ![]() |
