How "crazy" are you? lol

I have been a member here for years... I mostly hang out in the recipe room and I just now popped in here... amazing! I love it! More "crazy" people like me!

Why am I crazy? My friends (and even my husband most of the time) think I'm nuts...

Because I avoid the microwave.
Because I don't use plastic.
Because I don't use canned food because cans are lined with plastic.
Because I grew my own garden to avoid pesticides.
Because I use organic pesticides around my house instead of raid.
Because I slather my kids with olive oil instead of lotion.
Because I threw away all of my MAC to get all-natural fruit and mineral makeup.
Because I am a hairdresser and I use Burt's Bees shampoo instead of the latest-greatest hair products.
Because I avoid mushrooms and corn because I believe they are toxins.
Because I don't let my kids eat fruit snacks.
Now they will think I am even crazier because I now will be avoiding canola oil. LOL!!!

So share with me why your "crazy" too! I'm sure there are things out there that I need to be crazy about and I don't even know it yet!!!

Even my 'crazy' friends have pause with some of my stuff:

I have a worm composter in my bedroom.
I make all of my own soap
I do not use shampoo
I do not use antiperspirant, I make my own deodorant
I use raw dairy
I juice
I drink tea leaves not tea bags
I do not use laundry detergent or any detergent for that matter
I use honey and comfrey instead of antibacterial goops
I make all of my own lotions and butters
I make cheese, yogurt, kombucha, sour kraut, beet kvass, pickled beets, pickles.....jam, etc. all these things get me a 'crazy' title...
I drink coconut oil

Of course I organically garden and grow food, there are pics around here. I also avoid the nuker and have not used anything but mineral makeup for years.

Oh yes, definitely!

I don't own a microwave and won't eat microwaved food
I don't have cable or a digital converter (only watch movies)
I brew my own kombucha
I make my own yogurt
I dehydrate foods
I don't eat refined foods or sugar
I'm buying a 1/4 grass fed cow
I don't use lotion (use coconut oil)
I don't wear makeup
I won't use regular shampoo (I use TJ's Tea Tree Tingle shampoo, no parabens or other nasty stuff)
I won't use antibacterial soaps/sprays
I make my own cleaners, including using vinegar

I'm sure the list goes on, but those are things I can think of off the top of my head.

Oh, I thought I could come up with something but I pale in comparison but here goes:

I work 24 hour shifts and my hospital feeds me for free yet I bring all my meals because I don't trust any of the oils they use.
I make my own butter blend (1 stick organic butter with 1/2 cup macadamia nut oil)
I NEVER eat fast food
My cats eat Natural Balance cat food because I don't want them to eat crap.

Cool thread idea! A number of the things already mentioned I do, including:
-Don't own a microwave
-Don't eat canned food
-Don't have cable or a digital converter (though we do have a TV for the Wii )
-Don't shampoo everyday - I use the Curly Girl method
-I'm phasing out plastic in my kitchen, especially tupperwares and the like
-Coconut Oil in my coffee every AM, and I'm using it in cooking more often
-Most of the produce, at least half the meat, and all the eggs I buy are local and grown using organic methods
-I walk or bike for most errands I need to run (and it's much easier than trying to drive and park a car in Philly!)
-I'm trying to phase out non-stick cookware, and have been showing all my love to my cast iron cookware lately

Over memorial day weekend, I was at a family BBQ. At one point during the conversation, I casually mentioned that when I can afford to live somewhere with enough space, I plan on raising chickens for eggs/meat. Everyone looked at me like I had 10 heads! I can't get upset about it though. For them, there's a total disconnect between a real live chicken and the boneless, skinless chicken breasts that come neatly cleaned and wrapped in the supermarket.

Haha I never even thought to mention I don't watch TV nor have cable....Never bought a TV or a new car either by choice. Our gifted TV is an XBOX monitor....OH and a clothes dryer because I line dry most of my clothes haha.

Thanks for the props on the worms...I was wigged out the first night...man I had nightmares, but my babies are happy, no escape artists....

I too use all cast iron, I love it. Haven't used teflon in years. Have a George foreman and it's so easy but I really try not to use it....

Ten heads yup, been there. I find myself a yard watcher.Like in a bad obsessive OCD way....kinda like how ppl stare at other's grocery carts...I'm like that with yards....hahah I hang out of the car like a dog looking at all the neighbors who grow and I spied a chicken coop.... last weekend Man poor DH almost wrecked I made such a ruckus.....I am so excited yer gonna do it when you can. We want to....soon I hope.

Sure. In a nutshell I believe there is plenty of research to show that cancer is actually a type of fungus and that is why it is so hard to get rid of. Sugar and carbs feed the fungus. Corn also has developed a toxin that has embedded itself in all strains. Look up "corn smut" or "huitlacoche." Grains are also stored in silos for long periods of time and also can become contaminated with fungus.

WOE: Atkins 10+ years strong!
I have a huge fear to every oil that's not unrefined, cold-pressed EVOO.

I am crazy about avoiding any soy, is in EVERY product known to man.

I spend hours in stores analyzing every ingredient in the product.

Trans fats is another thing that freaks me out. I get anxiety attacks over it.

I am addicted to coconut everything: flour, oil, milk, water.

I don't go out to eat, if possible. I can't enjoy it, I visualize all of the processed crap in all of the foods.

Whole Foods is my b.f.f. for health products, food, supplements.

I wash my hair once a week, if that. I do use a dry shampoo [though I do bathe everyday.]

I spend SO much money on my pets' food. My cat got chronic UTI from dry food, so he is on a raw foods now. It works quite well for him, he hasn't had any issues now. My dog is on doggy Atkins, Evo grain-free dry/wet dogfood.

So according to this website fungals include vinegar and yeast. So does this rule out Kombucha? I will be sad if it is.

Also, is there a complete list of all fungal or fungus causing foods?

Thanks!

Vinegar with the mother is ok. This would also include kombucha cause it has one of those "mothery" things going on with it - I am not technical that way - I just brew and enjoy.<breaths sigh of relief>

You can do a search of candida diet food list and you should come up with something. The lists are usually a little daunting, but I have found that certain foods cause me certain candida reactions so I avoid those - not the whole long list. I think I would starve if I did.

That is what I thought, since most sites and articles tout the Kombucha as an anti-candida drink... My batch is lightening up and becoming vinegary goodness in my pantry as we speak!

Kombucha isn't fungus (the scoby is actually cellulose not a mushroom), it's a colony of beneficial bacteria and yeast that create the scoby.

batch? Like in singular?! Only 1 batch?! That wouldn't do in my household and I am the only one drinking mine Although, I think my ds got brave and had a home brew recently. He likes Synergy but I think he's a skeered of what mom is brewing - might be a concoction to make bratty teenagers nice

but that's a whole nother thread - sorry for the threadjack - back to the "crazy" people

And let me just say, I am finding this thread fascinating.

Our lifestyle isn't real condusive to do all that you guys are doing. I have made little changes here and there, but nothing like some of you - I admire and applaud you for that Keep up the "craziness" One day, when I grow up, I will be either one of you crazies or a crazy cat lady or both

Yes my DH calls me pretty OCD about it....At the farmers market it's cool. Most people there get it. At Wal-mart? Ug...AND I bought the bags I was using at Wal-mart...double ug. It's been a while since I was there and I really try not to go there but I needed some emergency herbs and tea tree, they were the only ones open at the time.

I was looking at those re-usable bags and they are made of a very nasty kind of plastic. Even though they feel like a cottony material. I just re-use my trader joes bags until they rip. but they usually hold up for at least 8-10 trips!

I think they make the reusable bags out of recycled plastic bags? Please tell my why they are nasty, I'm not sure I want to know. I do have a pattern I got from a very nice lady at my local co-op, guess I'll need to start making my own from actual fabric.

Sorry, I get a little heated about plastics! I despise them and it's impossible to avoid them 100%. Even my car's interior is plastic- ew. Here is some info on the "supposedly safe" plastic #5 known as polypropylene. Danger Will Robinson, a Plastic You WEAR May Be Harmful! - The Fun Times Guide to Living Green

Honestly, all plastics are made from chemicals, and just because chemists havent "discovered" chemicals that leach from them, doesn't mean they aren't there. I beleive (my opinion) that ALL plastics are very dangerous ESPECIALLY when in contact with food or our bodies. Like I said I know it's impossible to eliminate completely, but I try as much as possible! So no reusable bags for me. I'll stick with paper or cotton If I could afford it I would stick with organic cotton as regular cotton is one of the most polluted crops in the world when it comes to pesticides.

Scary what we have done to this planet and ourselves.

I agree, plastic is so bad. It's so pervasive also, my keyboard and mouse as are plastic and I use them all day long! I'm slowly getting rid of all my plastic in the kitchen (almost there). And soon I'll be making some canvas or cotton (or hemp if I can find it) reusable bags. I agree, scary and IMO sad.

I guess I'm extra crazy because I think huitlacoche is delicious. Oh man, really delicious. The truffle of Mexico!
