Nutritional yeast

I bought some of this to add to my shakes but now I can't remember what the benefits are. I really don't like the taste of it in my shake so I'm hoping it has some wonderful benefits to outweigh the taste :-)

Look at the nutrition label, it's incredibly high in B vitamins. Maybe leave it out of your shake and shoot it in a small amount of liquid separately. I have been adding algae green drink & brewers yeast to a small amount of Kombucha tea and that helps. Not same with water lol.

I bought a dietary supplement called "Brewer's Yeast Powder" I would think this is nutritional yeast. Some websites refer them as "or" another says similar another says ... sigh. Two tblspns. provide a whole lot of nutrition! 158% RDA Chromium - 90% Selenium - 88% B2 - 80% B1 - 50% Copper - 50% Niacin - 40% B6 and others way too many to list. It tastes peanutty to me. I have been adding it to sesame butter, a lil raw honey, coconut cream & coconut oil, powdered whey and tastes like peanut butter to me! (Not blowing my diet to put it on toast, but boy that sounds good lol)

At 7 grams carbs for 2 Tbspn (not to even mention the honey) it's blowing my low carb diet, but this month doing a health month & will go back to it another time.

Ok, Thanks Cindy. What I have is the Yeast Flakes. They did have a powder there but it was more expensive. But maybe it would taste better. I'll try adding it to different things and see if that helps. Didn't realize it was so high in carbs, though. May have to keep an eye on that.

I was told nutritional yeast tasted better than brewer's yeast powder (supposedly less bitter) I bought a jar of both but the nutritional yeast I bought had a lot of added B vitamins, which makes it higher in nutrition but nastier in taste. (I'd rather get B vitamins in a pill) I don't think the brewer's yeast is bitter kind of nutty, it had naturally occuring vitamins and none added.

I wouldn't use mine in my shakes, but I love it sprinkled on veggies, scrambled or fried eggs, and even popcorn!

Love this stuff. I put it in tomato based soups and sauces. Try it atop a savory yam dish. It's pretty yummo.

I also think it has a cheesy kind of flavor, it's great sprinkled on salads or mixed into salad dressing. I add it to roasted almonds also. I think nutritional yeast (I bought it at a health food store in their bulk bins, it's a powder) tastes WAY better than brewer's yeast. I bought a jar of brewer's yeast and to me it tasted absolutely terrible so I tossed it (very bitter).

Su, Kal makes a nice brand and Frontier brand is also very good. Make sure your NY states "fortified"

I use it in soups, on salads, veggies, etc. I love my NY!

So what is the difference between nutritional yeast and Brewers yeast and which is better? My can says Nutritional yeast flakes. Made by Kal. It also says Premium, unsweetened, fortified, Gluten free, wonderful nutty taste. Non-GMO.

you've got the right one TW. Although the terms "brewer's yeast" and "nutritional yeast" are often used interchangeably, they're not exactly the same. Nutritional yeast is any yeast grown for the specific purpose of being a food supplement, and is enhanced for better flavor because brewer's yeast has more of a bitter taste.

McDougall made this mistake in his earlier books and created a great deal of confusion.

I'm using KAL brand currently.

Oh no, try it out! It's fantastic! Really, I would compare it to a cheesy powder. This wouldn't taste good in a shake just as cheese would not taste good.

Just take a piece of steamed broccoli or other veggie and pour some butter over it and sprinkle with NY. Like I said, I love it in soups too.

Fawn the corrupter lol Got to fill a shaker up with yeast & kelp (and USE it lol) Added Brewers yeast to scrambled eggs & soup and didn't notice a difference.

I don't really like the taste but I will mix it in with my devilled eggs. Can't even taste it then.

I force myself to use it (even off a spoon if i have to) because I know it's good for me.

I'm glad to be at a point in my life where I can eat things for nutritional value over taste. Wish it hadn't taken me so long.

I had the can here by my desk so I could tell you guys what it was. So I decided to just take a taste. It was actually pretty good like that. So it's ok to eat it just straight? I did not like it on broccoli. I just might try it in devilled eggs. I add enough stuff in my eggs that maybe I won't taste it. I can also trick my husband to get some in since he eats allot of devilled eggs :-)

Hahaha. NY in your shake? That can't be any better than the avocado and bacon shake I made once.

I sprinkle 2 tbs of NY over my fried eggs, bacon and bacon-fat wilted spinach every morning. I also add it to salads, soups & bisque, and my chili. It's awesome stuff.

Zengirl, I've never had an MSG reaction and I too am sensitive. I've dug and dug for credible information on yeast as we know it is a glutamate to no avail. I'm using my own bodily reactions which are nil but do warn those who are highly sensitive that they could react. Making sure not to heat it is also imperative.

If you eat popcorn, it is very fantastic on popcorn.

I agree with sprinkling on vegetables, soups, meats, eggs, etc.

Darkfire, it was my cheese as a vegan too! I laugh now, because really, it tastes cheese-y-ish, but it ain't cheese.

Good tip on the deviled eggs! Thanks!

Also, yaggh, don't put it in a shake. Eww.

He's quite picky and told me never to feed him that again :-) I have to admit, it tasted quite gummy. I did add it to my salad last night and it was quite good. I may get up the nerve to try it on eggs today.

By the way, I'd never had yeast before and just assumed it was like wheat germ or flax seed. Not much taste. That's why it went in my shake. I learned my lesson LOL.

How much did you use? I only use about 1tsp per 4 eggs
