Do you like any particular brand of coconut oil better than another?

I've tried several different brands and I think Tropical Traditions is the most creamy (has the best texture) and is very coconutty tasting.
I bought one off of Dr. Mercola's website, it was good (texture was a bit waxy though). And one in a black plastic bottle (got at healthfood store can't remember the brand name) but the texture was also a bit waxy. I always end up going back to TT's, it's a bit more expensive but I like it the best. |

Laura,
I have gallons of both the Gold Label virgin and the expeller pressed from TT. Both are great and as you say, for different uses. When I bake and use oil for stuff my family will be eating I use the expeller pressed. My family hates anything that tastes like coconut! When I want to take it as a dose for the day, I use the virgin. Right off the spoon because I haven't found a good way to get a dose down. I am one who cannot get the bark to taste quite right and don't want to drink 10 oz of coconut milk every day to get in the right dose LOL. Anyway, on the cream concentrate...I eat it by the spoon too. I cannot figure out what to do with it either as I don't eat breads. Everyone seems to want to put it on toast and as we don't eat toast.....maybe if I have a low carb muffin or pancake it can be used on that, but I don't make them often.

I also buy the Gold Label virgin (and use this as a moisturizer, as well as for food). I'd like to get some of the expeller pressed for things I don't want to taste coconutty.

[COLOR="DarkGreen"]I buy the expeller pressed by the gallon from TT so I have enough. I make mayo with it and I use 2 C. melted in the recipe. I also use it as a regular oil for cooking and baking. The virgin I was getting at WallyWorld till they quit carrying the Rexall brand, now I'll just get it from TT. The coconut cream concentrate I could not find a way to cook with it I liked, so now it is in the bathroom and is my toothpaste.

Thanks all! So the coconutty stuff is their gold label virgin, I will order that shortly. I just tried the coconut cream by the spoon. Kind of like coconut flavored peanut butter - thick, creamy and little bit chalky almost. Taste good though. Dawn, I do make flax muffins and might try it on that thanks for the tip.
BikerAng - yes, I am happy to have accidently gotten the expeller stuff. The coconut flavored does not go with everything. It is fine for flax muffin but I made a flax bread to make a BLT sandwich and did not like with a coconut flavor. Pepperette - I want to make mayo with it, if you use all expeller pressed coconut does it get hard when refrigerated or do other odd things? I just bought some grapeseed oil that I was going to try half and half with the expeller pressed to make mayo but maybe I will try all coconut oil first to see if I like it. I think my next order is going to have to be gallon size. I ordered 2 quarts but not sure that is going to last me very long. Also have been adding coconut milk (about 1/4 cup) to my morning shake and it gives a good flavor as well as keeping me from getting hungry. Thumbs up for coconuts!

I prefer Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil. I've tried others and so far Nutiva is the one I like best. I bought it by the gallon. That is how much I liked it. I don't eat it anymore, but I do put it all over myself now. LOL.

thanks
I just want to say that I have been reading everyone's posts here about coconut oil. I've learned what oil pulling is and I am just thrilled to use coconut in all of these different ways now. My usual use for coconut oil is as an anti viral when I or my family is sick, as a hair treatment and a moisturizer, but now I have lots of new ways to use it.
Thanks again. |

Crest Glide "tape" floss is relatively tough stuff anyway, but the coconut oil residue makes it slightly easier to floss and reduces shredding.

Sometimes using it for brushing and oil pulling will make yer teeth dingy as it pulls the stuff out. I have no proof only me. I am brushing with it as I have a crown, temp cement. Scared to OP until the real cement goes on next month. I am allergic to gold and nickel so the post they used was made of zirconium?!?! To make sure I do not have a reaction it has to stay with temp cement for almost a year.....eek. Sept. will be a year so soon I will be back to it.
I got hit in the face with a Wal-Mart cash drawer, got a hair line crack in a tooth. I used to work on their computer systems for a living. Not just Wal-Mart, they were just the biggest contract. The hospital that ex rayed my jaw didn't think it was anything to worry about....Well my advice is if you EVER get hit in the jaw hard enough to knock you on yer butt....get to the dentist. The tooth was a mess three years later. So thats why I have a crown and no OP right now. |

Does anyone make their own coconut oil shampoo, soap, or lotion?
I know that I can just apply directly, but it is so greasy. I make a big mess. LOL. I stopped brushing with it, but I think I might start again. I'll do it maybe every other day. |

It must be summer: my CO has finally turned to liquid.
Gosh, it's so much easier to use when it's already melted in the jar. Even the coconut cream concentrate is soft and easily spoon-able (tempting and extremely dangerous ) |

Thanks for the tip, Su.
MissBeth- My CO started to melt, too! I am so happy about it. You're right. It is a lot easier to use. I don't even feel motivated to use it when it is not melted. Too much trouble. |

In a 3 pound batch of soap I use a total of 54 ounces, by weight of oils and fats. 16 of them are coconut oil. It helps lathering in salty water. To clean boats they use soap made from 100% coconut oil.
I don't really care but DH wants his soap to have tons of bubbles and the coconut helps with that. Does the nourishment stay in the soap? I do not know, just cannot use those crazy chemical baths that pass for normal soap so it works for me. |

coconut oil
I use coconut on my hair as my fam has been using it for generations (I'm asian)
I'm Muslim and some Muslims use a special toothbrush called a 'Miswak' which is super good for your teeth, totally natural (it's a bark from a special tree) and gives you shiny white teeth I love natural stuff lol |

My DD 14,DD13 and I use CO for :
oil pulling/teeth brushing body lotion make-up removal shaving sunscreen I also use CO to brush my dogs' teeth and to rub into their paws. My Frenchie had an irritation on the skin in his ear,and after a few days of rubbing the CO into the area, the irritation disappeared! |
