Hi all! I live in southeast VA and just started my SFG two weekends ago. I have 2 4x4's with tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, lavendar, rosemary and soon to plant some corn, sunflower and spaghetti squash. For the fall/winter (ours are mild compared to most) I will have kale, cabbage, broccoli, radishes, lettuce and more herbs.

Someone asked for pics - I have some of mine just starting out except for my "wild garden" of parsley, green onions, chives and bushes of sage:

You asked for it...pics

Well I have 500 sq feet to live in but outside....I plant like you wouldn't believe. I have one worm composter in the bedroom about to split them and start a second worm composter. Yup it does take a special kind of crazy to sleep with that many worms in yer bedroom hehe.

Inside of Worm Bin a Month Ago or so.

Outside of Worm Bin

Main Plot May 1st 2009 <Maryland has been cold>

Memorial Plot May 1st 2009

Patio Pots May 1st 2009

So there is some garden porn. I'll start a new post when I get home tonight. I'll post pics from today from all of plots. The growth is amazing, not a whole lot of flowering yet...sad but true.

Enjoy!

Just to update. My garden was a total flop. All of the seeds sprouted and that is it. Didn't grow. Even the transplanted pepper, tomato and flowers didn't get any bigger than what they were when I purchased them. I think it was the mix of soil I bought from Walmart. I can't remember the brand and what I used. I thought I bought what was recommended from the Barthalamew book. Maybe next year? Or I might just investigate CSA further.

I am not sure what zone you are in Vli but you could plant some more seeds. I am still planting. I just ripped out two tomatoes that were damaged and had no flowers. I dropped some more seeds in. I planted some more cilantro last week. Just replanted some mint and ripped out some beets to can. Again not sure what zone you are in but maybe plant again? I have a question, did you test your soil? I am not sure the profile but maybe the plants needed more nutrients? Or water?

Good Luck to you.

Thanks dark, I am in zone 5. I did not test the soil since it was a bag of soil. I guess I could try again for fall plantings.

I got a cheapy ph tester but aside from the readings....I put ground up crab shells, eggshells, epsom salt and comfry tea in my garden. My worm compost isn't quite ready but soon. It is making a difference. The weather has been pooey this year all the farmers I have talked to were scared and lost alot...lots of money was lost locally around me. It's been scary and sad but now, finally things are looking up.

One of the farmers grabbed my hand over her table as I reached for some beets and said "How bad do you really want this?" I was all flustered....I'll save you the details of the conversation but the gist was...keep trying, grow what you can, buy what you need and never stop trying. Of course there was the obligatory, voting with your dollars and keeping it real baltimore talk but what it boils down to...like everything is that... It's not a failure unless you stop trying just like weight and low carb and all that jazz.

Darkfire, where did you get your pH tester? I've never noticed them in the garden shops.

I love it that your Baltimore garden includes crab shells, hon!

Lowes. it does water, light and PH it was like $8.99. I also then bought other testers to test it against and it works.
