MCT Oil and Coconut Oil
 
Questions for those of you who have been doing this awhile. Do you use both MCT oil and Coconut oil? Do you strictly use one or the other?

So I know that MCT Oil is a pure MCT while coconut oil is only roughly 65%. (that is, if what I am reading is correct). So if this is indeed true, wouldn't MCT Oil be the preferred oil?

If you do "use" the MCT oil, do you use it in coffee? Any other ideas on its use? I just got a bottle and very curious.

Just kicking around some oily thoughts. ;)

I use coconut oil only. I don't bother with the MCT oil, though I wouldn't turn it down. I like extra virgin coconut oil for many uses, internal and external, and I don't see the need to buy MCT oil as well.

The extra virgin is amazing! My grocery store just recently started carrying it. I LOVE coconut and the smell and flavor is delicious! I have half a jar of the other coconut oil at work that I put in my coffee. :)

I purchased 1 bottle of MCT oil to try. It has absolutely no flavor.

Since I just want to use it up, I use it half and half in my salad dressing, so 1/2 MCT oil, 1/2 olive oil (though I do prefer extra light olive oil).

I'm not crazy about CO, and wonder if I should try a less flavored variety, but I don't know what to buy and I have a lot already.

I need to remember to use it more often, just force myself to, for brain health (and I need all the help I can get.)

I bought a bottle of mct oil and use 1T first thing in the morning blended in my coffee. I think it helps regulate my appetite through the day and it gives me some energy for my morning workout. I'm sure using coconut oil is just as good. It is mostly mct's. I dont know if i will buy it again. I will have to see if there ends up being a difference using co in my morning coffee or mct oil.

I use coconut oil. I love the extra virgin for flavoring my coffee in the morning and use the regular for cooking. Never tried the MCT oil

I use both and sometimes a mixture of the two. MCT is good to use as a ketogenic oil when I needs to be cold and liquid ('cuz coconut oil will get hard when it is cold).

When I make my mayo, I use 50% olive oil, 37.5% MCT oil and 12.5% coconut oil.

If you mix MCT oil and coconut oil together, the mixture will stay liquid at room temperature. It's good for salad that way.

I love coconut oil, but it doesn't love me back. I get really sick when I try to use it. MCT, OTOH, I can tolerate. If you can tolerate CO, I don't see the point of buying mct oil also, unless you want to put it in something cold like a smoothie. Mct oil is perfect for that.

I never even thought about using my MCT oil in my mayo. So glad you shared tht, Rebecca!

I did not know that about the MCT and CO together, I will definitely try that, and maybe a bit of olive oil too, for my salad dressing.

What kind of olive oil do you use in your mayo? I've been using extra light for the lack of flavor, EVOO is just too strong. What about just regular olive oil? I'm always looking for suggestions now that I make amazing mayo.

Plus math scares me...what are those quantities in measurements (please ;) )

I just use coconut oil, I get it cheap from costco, can use it for everything from cooking, to deserts to putting it on your skin which makes it feel amazing!

I take fish oil.

Why not combine the oil with something tasty, I love making this as a nut bar.
Crushed pecans + ground almonds cooked (low heat just to melt coconut oil) in coconut oil, then leave it to cool so the coconut oil goes hard. Then it's a yummy snack.

Sometimes I like a little sweetness so I put a some stevia in it.

I use either extra light olive oil or high-oleic safflower oil in my homemade mayo. If I had MCT oil, that would be good, but I wouldn't buy it just for that.

Research has found that using both coconut oil and MCT oil together gives a better result of ketone bodies. One will make ketone bodies quickly, but that last a shorter time, and the other raises the level of ketone bodies very slowly and keeps them elevated for a longer amount of time.

You may find that if you start taking CO in very small quantities, and increase over time, you will get used to it.

I use light olive oil for the flavor. This is my recipe:

3 egg yolks
tsp. Dijon mustard
1 Tbs. apple cider vinegar with the mother
tsp. sea salt
4 oz. olive oil
1 oz. coconut oil
3 oz. MCT oil
4 drops Stevia
Tbs. lemon juice

Refined CO doesn't have the coconut flavor. I've found that I like the flavor in my coffee, though, and this is still my #1 use of CO. I also use it in a single serving fat bomb-like treat: Tablespoon each of CO (or MCT oil), protein powder, and almond flour, with pinch of salt. When I do iced coffee, I use MCT oil as it doesn't glom up. Rebecca thanks for great tip of mixing MCT oil and CO for greater liquidity! I am going to try the new mayo recipe, too.

I have also recently purchased three jars of Jiggy Marley's Coco'mon flavored coconut oil: curry, lemon-ginger, and orange-almond. There was a great sale, so what to lose. They are good for saute, for lazy cooks, like me. I think with winter-coming on and kind of overdoing coffee, I may start adding a bit of the latter two to hot tea.

I've seen these at the store too, but haven't purchased them. I guess I could try one to start.

Avocado oil is very nice for mayo!

As for MCT, I haven't tried it yet. I use both EVCO and regular CO without the flavour.

I use NOW sports MCT oil in my morning coffee along with 2 tablespoons of Heavy Cream. Put it all in a blender to froth it up and it makes a great breakfast drink. Carries me for hours in the morning while at work. No need to snack. I also have a scrambled egg with Jimmy Dean saugage crumbles each morning... between those two - I am good for hours. Thanks for this discussion.

I hadn't seen it in my area until today. Costco was giving out samples, and they sell it for $9.89/liter. I was wondering what the fatty acid profile is....will it help balance out the omega-6 we get from meat?

The last 2 times I've made mayo, I've had flops. I used a different brand of olive oil (Pompein) rather than the Bertolli. Has anyone noticed issues with different oils? I can't afford to have the flops. And I thought I had become the mayo queen, and now this? Ugh.

I make mayo with the avocado oil from Costco. It has a nice, mild flavor.

Annette, I make mayo with my immersion/stick blender and have never had it not work quickly and easily. Have you tried that?

I have used different kinds of olive oil, walnut oil and the avocado oil with no issues.

Finally got the hang of the stick blender today. One flop and one success! So much easier than the slow whip! Thanks for bringing this up again.
