Hello all - is a diet consisting of only meat and eggs an acceptable way of getting into nutritional ketosis? And if so, how many calories should be eaten in here? Thanks in advance.

It does, because the sugar causes a blood sugar spike and sets off a chain reaction of hormones in your system that takes you out of ketosis. You really want to get your carbs in small amounts throughout the day to keep your blood sugar levels stable. That said, I think on occasion you can "splurge" and have a little bit of something carby without it completely doing you in. You may have more cravings tomorrow as a result.

I tried to get by with using Mission Carb Balance tortillas the last two nights and was working my way out of ketosis. On occasion I want something other than salad for lunch, but I can't lose weight while eating breads. Wish I could - bread is my favorite food.

Well I am not new to Ketosis dieting and low carb eating. I have done a bit of reading and I keep up on here. However, I believe this is my first post on this website; and it is a question. So this is a question that came to me today as I was about to eat 2 oreo cookies. Yes I know a date with the enemy But here is the question. I had not eaten any carbs throughout the day and I have been well into ketosis for about a week. The decision to eat the cookies was not an impulse decision and I did my research to see how many carbs per cookie. The math adds up to 8.33 carbs per cookie, and I was pretty sure it was all suggar . SO I figured with just 2 I could get a treat and stay under the radar and stay on ketosis. But then alarms went off in the back of my head which is what lead me make this post. Ok so my question is if I can normaly eat 30 grams of carbs per day and still stay in ketosis and all I have eaten today is about 20 grams of carbs, does it make a diference if those 20 grams came from a high glycemic index food in a short amount of time? I do not have keto stiks so I cant test my self tomorrow, and I'm pretty sure I will know the answer tomorrow by how hungry I feel throughout the day, but I though I would ask some of my low carb buddies to see if they had the answer to my question
I hope you didn't end up eating them. It is definitely a slippery slope when we eat those carbs. At the same time, we are allowed to choose what we want to eat, and why. My carb tastes have been tortilla chips when out for Mexican food, but I've never had more than 3 yet. And dang, they still taste good.

Sure, lots of people do the Meat and Egg diet to jumpstart things. You can even do it longer if you choose and don't get bored. Use fatty meats and/or use some extra fats too. Calories are dependent on your own needs. There's a lot of protein posts in this forum.

I've never cared for cashews or peanut butter that much. I'm luckily not a nut binger either. It's the sweet that does it. Luckily I only ate 3, hah...take that Oreos. I would have eaten the whole box of Oreos and honestly, I don't even like Oreos. They are one of the foods that have been created to make me eat more, even when I don't like them.

I'm just glad it's Friday and we're headed into the weekend. Today I'll try my chia pudding I made last night. My husband said it was blah, not like pudding. I made it for ME, not him.

Diet is still going well but I can always tell when I start needing a little more variety again. I must be wanting some sweets, so I'm probably using too much AS. Maybe next week I'll focus on no sweeteners. I was also thinking of dropping protein, tracking macros. Ugh. I hate doing that.

Another thought is this:

Eating food-like substances is how we all got in this mess to begin with. Personally, I have decided to stop eating non-food and just eat real, whole food. I want to kill off any desire I have to eat cookies, cake, candy and other sugar-laden non-foods.

I want my body to crave real food, and the longer I fool around with allowing my body to eat sugar, the longer it will be before I stop craving that garbage.

But that's just me.

It does for diabetics (hypo and hyperglycemics). Not sure how much it affects non-diabetics. I follow Dr. Bernstein (Diabetes Solution) who says it's not just how many (less than 25gm per day), but also what type (only non-starchy vegies) and how many to eat at once (spread out through meals).

I agree with you. I love eating this way. I do not miss sugar, grains, or starches of any kind. If I want something different, I make some fat bombs. They can be made with different items each time.

I just wanted to say hi and that im pretty happy with things too. Im not totally obsessing about every morsel i put in my mouth. I can go without eating for hours and not feel like im going to eat the paint off the walls. My mom even commented today at lunch that she can already tell a difference in that im more calm about my eating and not so OCD about everything. She said she thought it was great. Im more relaxed. It feels great!!
I'm loving this!! I have only lost about 3 lbs so far but thats ok. I know i will. I am definitely in ketosis and can really feel it and smell it....lol My pee is so stinky!!!
but i love it!! thank you guys!!
I'm going to MIMI's for dinner with my wonderful fiance. I have no idea what im going to eat. Its so late that i might just do the chicken breast and garlic spinach and a side salad with ranch. Or maybe just a cobb salad. I have no idea!!!

If your pee is stinky, you should increase your water intake. Also if you eat too much protein it will be stinky. Also vegetables such as cauliflower and brocolli will also make it smell.

Thank you carolyn but i dont know how i could drink more than i do now. I drink 20 oz in the morning before work. At least 2 24 oz bottles at work, plus 2 cups of tea, then when i get home I drink another 16oz of water. Its quite a bit already. Its mainly really stinky in the mornings. Its not so bad the rest of the day. I'm eating right at 100 grams of protein per day. a little more some days or a little less. I weigh 160 and lift weights so im trying ot make sure i preserve my muscle. And i havent been eating many vegetable.

I got up with a .2 gain this morning. That sucks. Aunt Flo is here though and I'm slightly swollen this morning. Its humid here. I'm about to go to the lake for a 4 mile walk with my mom so that will help. Have agreat day everyone.
I'll be back on here later.

Hey Kathy, yes I am back from vacation... Still slowing working my way back into things.

I have another short 3 day trip coming up next weekend too, and so I am not eating NK totally and will probably just eat lower calorie/salad/Low carb mainly until the trip and then when i get back, maybe try a fat fast to get back in the groove. TOM is in town too, and its all making me miserable! LOL

How are you?? How is NK going for you currently? Losing still? I missed the group too!!

I see. My morning pee is smelly also. During the day it is fine. So it is probably because you don't drink any water all night which is normal. Sometimes 100 grams of protein is too much. I cannot have more than 60 grams a day or I gain. You will have to decide that for yourself. I wouldn't worry about the .2 gain. I am sure that is water weight. You will probably see another loss in a day or two.

I sure do hope so. I know that TOM is here right now so that doesnt help. I'm retaining water like crazy. I also had a major problem this morning. i had bullet proof coffee and then went on that long walk at the lake. It was about 1.5 hrs. Very nice. I came home and and had some leftover cut up and cooked with egg substitute (out of real eggs!!). I cooked it in 1T ghee. also added about half cup of cooked broccoli and had 1/4 avocado.
About half an hour after eating my tummy was really upset and i ended up in the bathroom, (TMI), with major liquid BM. I mean all liquid just about. Alot!! There was also food particles. You guys know i dont have a gall bladder so i hope this isnt some major side effect of eating too much fat. I lost all of my liquid and started drinking like crazy and didnt have to go pee for about 4 hrs even though i drank 2 20oz bottles of water. It was crazy!!
I didnt eat again until about 230p and just had some chopped chicken salad i made with pork skins. So far no more issues. I'm hoping its not just the bullet proof coffee. It might just be too much fat all at once for me or something.
I bought plenty of eggs at the farmers market so im going to make sure to just eat eggs for breakfast all week and not have the bullet proof coffee this week and i'll see what happens.
Sorry for this being so long.
When it comes ot lowering my protein i dont really know how to. I love meat and eggs!!
There was a time i played with not eating much meat at all and almost being vegetarian and i hated it. I ended up having a major binge on meat. And i was about 45 to 65 grams per day. I feel so much better when im eating at least 100 grams of protein.
I dont know. I just have to keep playing around with the macros and seeing where im at.
My carbs are really really low now so im hoping to really start seeing a drop on the scale. I need to!!! Something has to give!!!

Still doing NK- am under my goal and trying to decide to go down more or accept 124.5 and start trying to maintain! That is just as hard for me. You will get back in the grove- fat fast is the best way to get there!

Having had that issue before, I recommend that you add more salt to your diet. It will help regulate everything and make you feel better. Especially after that long walk, you probably needed some salt. I just add a little to my hand and eat it. Then I drink a glass of water. I don't have to do that hardly at all any more, because my body is used to eating this way. I used to get light headed and have the issues that you describe. The broccoli also could have added to the problem. Broccoli goes right through me.

Bit of a lurker on this thread! I do enjoy reading how you are all doing and what you find works in this WOE. I think what is really heartening is that we all struggle to find what suits us and just when we think we've got it nailed wham. I am starting to get a bit of confidence eating high fat and I am viewing each day almost as an experiment. I seem to need to focus on eating enough fat and spreading it through out the day. Also discovering beef really doesn't suit my metabolism and is likely to trigger a binge, which is why I am doing this WOE in the first place. Also think there is a link between having a bit of a sweet binge and leg cramps, no actually I don't think that I am convinced-leg cramp seems like a pretty good deterrent to binging, so there may be a positive in that! Anyway I feel like I know you and do appreciate your openness and sharing!

Finally made homemade mayonnaise, and it even tastes good.

Can't wait for dinner. Hamburger patties on the grill, and I sauteed up shitake mushrooms and onions in butter and olive oil. It's just going to be so delicious.

Yum... I have made homemade mayo once, but it does not last as long in the fridge as the store bought stuff, hmm.... probably a reason for that.. LOL Enjoy!! I had chicken with mushrooms in garlic and olive oil with cheese over the top of the chicken and mushrooms, one of my favs!

I only made 1 cup worth and since it's so yummy we should be able to eat it up. Was planning on a mock potato salad for tomorrow night....there we go, mayo is ready.

Oh, I ate it on my burger tonight.

Then went out for a walk in the heat. I really feel like I ate too much today, but lately I'm really craving the fat and everything is just so yummy again and I'm eating more quantity...but all of good stuff.

Does that mean anything, if anyone knows or can relate to.

Okay folks...a bit of chatter here please.

So, what are you major goals/focus for the week?

I have 2, no alcohol and more exercise.

I definitely noticed a rise in my FBG last week and I had white wine 6 out of 7 days. I'll start with that. Plus it's been getting hot again so I get lazier. No more lazy me, I will walk in the heat when I'm home from work and do weights more often. That's the plan at least

Hmm....I usually don't measure my foods, but just did for a day and was a bit surprised at how much added fat I was consuming (too much), and how much caffeine and carbs was in the iced tea that I drink (homebrewed and unsweetened).

So, my two goals:
1. See if I can adapt to fewer calories at meals and using internal fat stores.
2. Less iced tea. Had been drinking a bit over 1/2 a gallon per day, will taper down to 1/4 gallon over a week. Dropping too quickly will probably cause headaches from caffeine withdrawal.

For your "more exercise," I have a similar approach. Fortunately I live 1.1 miles from work, and just realized about 6 weeks ago that I could walk to/from work most days (some days weather or my joints don't cooperate). I also do weights twice a week, for about the past 4 weeks. That seems about all my body can handle, at least while in a caloric deficit. I definitely like starting slowly, as overdoing it and quitting isn't a great outcome either.

Pregnant??? Just teasing! Kathy

Just use it in place of butter. I have tried it, but i did not like the flavor. The only reason to use it, I think, is if you are sensitive to the casein in full butter.

I dont know what it means, but I can relate! I go through stretches like this too, where I am just eating more... no rhyme or reason for me...

That's the plan at least
goals/focus...
1. Eat close to NK.. I am leaving again for 4 days in about 5 days... so I am not going to work super hard on getting into NK because I wont be able to eat that way in Vegas... so just "watchful" and low carb...
2. Keep up the exercise! I have restarted my Chalene Extreme Program last week so I will continue it this week and continue to exercise all week as well as my watchful eating.
3. Try not to overeat. Sometimes when I know I am going to be leaving and not on diet, I use it as an excuse, and trying not to do that this week!!
