how do I calculate protein content?
 
I've been low carb for a couple of years now and want to try this out. I don't need to lose any weight (done all that part!) but reading about this particular diet makes me think it's possibly one of the healthiest and anyway I just LURVE any kind of fat! :yummy:
I have no idea though how to work out protein content - a pork chop from my local farmers market has loads of fat on it but how much of the meat is pure protein? I'm not very large anyway and from the calculations given on this site I need 80g or less of protein... I think...
Somebody please help me work out my protein intake (so I can eat less of it and eat MORE FAT yay!!!) :jumpjoy:

I use the weight of the food and then the usda web site for nutritional database for the amount of protein, carbs and fat. Don't forget that it is not just meat that has protein. Protein is in lots of other low carb foods that you might eat.

But a pork chop from my farmers market is not the same as a pork chop from the supermarket - one is fatty, the other from some poor sad pig that has been on a diet, so I can't see how a table of protein content for 'meat' can work in the way a carb table does for other foods. If I weigh the chop, I don't know how much of that weight is fat.

You can never get it exact ... the best is to get close. You have no real idea of how fatty the meat that they used to get the #s that they did....it is all just an approximation. If you feel strongly that the #s are not close then just add 'animal fat' and remove a bit of protein.

I don't know if the way I do it is the most accurate, but it's easy.

I reckon each ounce of cooked meat at 6-7 grams of protein and an equal amount of fat.

It's grand adding butter to meat!
