lunch double quarter pounder with cheese, no ketchup, no bun, lots of mcchicken sauce
and dinner i had a steak with portobello mushrooms and garlic, cauliflower and brocolli and a caesar salad no croutons

Apr 3 Log

My log for yesterday:

1498 cals
122gr fat
89gr pro
6.8gr carb (net)

B: 1T CO, 2 eggs + 1egg yolk with 15gr butter
L: Chilli: 3oz ground chicken / 3 oz ground beef (regular)
D: 1T CO, 7.25oz wild pacific Salmon, 1 cup broccoli, 1T olive oil
S: 1 egg yolk + 0.5oz cream cheese

Does this sound like too much of fat or cals?

What do you guys think about creating an NK menu plan thread? I've been thinking about it this week because of a post by sdpierce who was asking about it.

We have the old daily menus thread for reference:

Daily Menus-High Fat/Moderate Protein/Low Carb

...and the Grocery List thread for reference:

NK (High Fat Diet, Medium Protein, Low Carb) Grocery List

...and the (probably) NK friendly Induction Food Porn threads:

INDUCTION FOOD PORN!!!

If ya'll are interested I'll create a rough draft thread so we can hash out a menu plan and then create a new clean thread with the results.

Hi, I've been VLC for almost 3 years now (no cheats, ever!) But I did hit plateau and I'd like to loose 10 lbs. or either gain muscle and maintain weight. I'm doing Bar Method at home -- it really rips my thighs, they are getting so toned.

I lowered my protein intake and started putting butter in my coffee and decreasing my HWC. I lost 5 lbs. and got off my plateau.

But yesterday I entered my food into a food calculator and this is what I got:
(I'm 5'6" and currently weigh 161.4 lbs.)

2 eggs, scrambled
6 pats butter (I have coffee 2-3 times/day)
2 oz. HWC (maybe not that much?)
1 oz. (49 kernels) pistacio nuts (probably less than that . . .)
3/4 cup ground meat (homemade with spices to make like taco meat)
Cheese (on top of ground meat)

Calories: 1,067
Fat: 92.7 grams
Carbs: 11.9 grams
Protein: 48.6 grams

Percents:
Protein: 19%
Fat: 76%
Carbs: 4%

When I entered this into the caclulator yesterday evening, I really couldn't eat MORE. But I think I'm supposed to have more protein and calories? Right? This is pretty representative to what I eat every day -- I only eat twice a day because with the coffee, I'm not hungry.

Beezer, it looks like you may be underestimating the quantities of food. How much cheese? A pat of butter is roughly equivalent to a teaspoon, but if you used tablespoons of butter that would be 600 calories right there.

I could not find a way to track meat by the cup, only by the ounce or grams so I'm not sure how much 3/4 cup adds up to. If you have a food scale, it would give you a better idea of how much you are actually eating.

I 'shave' my butter so it's really thin (it curls into rolls) so it dissolves better in the hot coffee -- pretty sure not using more butter than the 6 pats.

On the food calculator I used it had '1 cup ground meat' so I replaced the 1 with a 0.75 and it gave me the numbers for 3/4 cup, which is 0.75. But the taco meat with shredded cheese on top -- it was really a small amount, probably not 3/4 cup but less. It was just enough finely shredded cheese to cover my little 3" diameter of taco meat, so I put 1 slice cheddar. I can double that if you think I'm underestimating.

But I'm not hungry. But I don't want to eat my own muscles, so I'm worried about the protein intake.

But if for NK 80/15/5 is the goal, I'm at 76/19/4 -- so that's close, just not enough calories? (Or maybe more calories than I think?) And I shouldn't worry about protein grams being 48.6 grams? I'm DEFINITELY not having more protein than that --- 2 eggs, small serving of taco meat . . .

Am I doing it wrong?

Beezer,

Welcome,
Under 1200 calories is awfully low.
How long did it take you to lose the 5 lbs when you lowered your protein?
I would think 45 g of protein would be too low and you could lose LBM. I am sure Red can give you a number of how many grams of protein you will need to protect LBM.

Lost the 5 lbs. in about 2 1/2 weeks once I cut back on my protein and started putting butter in my coffee. Now I'm just hanging out at 161 - 162 lbs, but I haven't been doing my Bar Method, that might knock me lower.

When I did regular LC, I had to stay at 1,200 to lose . . . more than that, I'd maintain. I'm hypothyroid (on meds) if that matters. Also, 44 yrs. old.

lol! Perfect!

Do you have a kindle? Google 'amazon a very good man'. The first book in the series is free on the kindle.

I'm not finished with it yet but it is an excellent PA/ZA story. Not too zombie-centric though.

Lisa is right, weighing food is the only way to have an accurate food log.

If that is right, though, your protein does look really low. You should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 75g to 100g of protein I think.

If you have to, cut back on fat grams to push up protein grams.

As for the hunger issue, well, there are two camps.

The popular camp is to allow the appetite suppression of ketogenic eating magically dictate an appropriate calorie level.

My lone voice in the wilderness camp is, no, your appetite is blunted because of the nature of a ketogenic way of eating. You still need to keep your metabolism engaged and you are still responsible for eating enough to take advantage of fat burning nature of eating this way. And most people confuse "no appetite" with "cannot eat". The fact is, you are not satiated all day long if you are eating low calories. Period. You can eat a couple hundred calories here and there. Maybe not 10 minutes after your last meal but in a couple hours you could eat a fat bomb or whatever and then a meal a couple of hours after that and so on and so forth.

No, this would be a menu planning thread. Basically, we'd hammer out a suggested menu plan for an entire week and month. And it is something we'd get the admins to sticky for us. The cool thing is that it would give people new to NK a concise running start on what a week or month of NK eating can look like. And, if my thinking on it is right, it'd be a resource for all of us if we get stuck in a rut with what we are eating.

I think this is a great idea
I need ideas and I don't like thinking about food so much to come up with my menus so it sounds like it would be very helpful.

Holy smoke! heh. Google 'pixel of ink' and 'ereader news today'- they are newsletters with free and bargain kindle books. That is how I found A Very Good Man and several other PA books.

ZA has become quite the cottage industry so there are a ton of them available for Kindle. The vary greatly in length and quality though since most are written by, more or less, enthusiast. And they run the gamut on how they approach the subject. Some are stories with zombies in it and some are zombie stories. And there are a distressing number of them that are trash pulp romance disguised as PA/ZA.

Been riding at 161 for about 10 days -- I'm just happy to be at THIS weight! LOL Wearing all my 'skinny' clothes and there's lots of clothes I can't wear anymore because they hang off me. (I'm a size 10/12 -- not tiny anyway.)

I feel fine. My 'go to' food is eggs, but they don't look like they give a lot of protein.

I'm glad you mentioned that. There is a history here that should be told. It'd make a good Johnny Cash ballad.

80/15/5 is not the really the goal. It is a flagstaff. It is our banner proclaiming the high fat nature of NK waving bravely in the tumultuous sea of low cal low fat in which everyone is swimming. Our little island of calorie sanity. Our declaration that 'We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on, we're going to survive.'

The roots of this particular thread stretch back to September of 2012. It was started as an 80/15/5 challenge thread by another person that dropped out shortly after starting it. There was another thread about NK. This thread transitioned from the challenge thread to an NK thread. At the time a disagreement developed between the two threads on how to approach NK. Essentially, what it boiled down to was that the other thread believed cutting calories (fat grams) was the best way to achieve NK and weight loss. If that didn't work the answer was cut more calories usually. In the end, the answer was always to cut more calories. I didn't believe that to be the best approach so this thread stayed alive and thrived.

Those old threads are still around. Just look through the subforum for the two big monthly threads. I know I am giving the other thread a short shrift because there was more to it than just cutting calories but the fact is that the answer always came back to cutting calories if it didn't start there in the first place, which it usually did. Still, there is some great information in those threads too. Don't be daunted by the size of them because there is a lot of chatty stuff, like in our thread, that you can zip right by.

I ordered a digital scale that goes down to 1 gram.

But if I make 6 eggs with a dash of HWC and butter in the skillet, then give most of them to my son and probably the equivalent of 2 eggs for me -- how do I measure the butter and HWC that I got? Do I weigh the entire thing and then our portions and then do some complicated math?

Sometimes I JUST do my 2 eggs, other days I do the 6 egg thing and feed my son the lion's share. (He's 16 yrs. old and low carb, too.)

I make a homemade chicken soup: boil chicken thighs with bone and skins, add onion and celery to the water, Old Bay seasoning and garlic powder. How would I figure out how much protein is in my bowl of soup?

The taco meat is easy - but I don't know how to do the other two. I've just never weighed food before (I've measured, but not weighed.)

I just realized I've been around at random lately chatting about things, but haven't really posted my daily totals or my progress since I started my journal... oops! Of course then again I hardly remember to post in there either, so I guess that's not surprising

I just wanted to share that this morning I was down to 156.5! It's been sort of slow going lately, but I can't wait to meet my first goal! It's sooooo close but I know the dreaded TOM will be throwing a wrench in my plans pretty soon, and I'll probably see some water weight come on. This will be my first month after starting potassium/magnesium supplements and my new multivitamin though... as well as my ACV tonics I've been drinking. So hopefully all of that will make a difference and minimize bloat!
