Volek wrote a blurb for Men's Health and he counted the protein as ... protein. He said they are a great source of protein.

When I eat rinds I count them towards my protein requirement for the day. The thing about them being an incomplete protein source is true, they are deficient in tryptophan which is an essential amino acid. So? From what I read you are getting more than you need of that essential amino acid from other sources of protein that you are eating.

Thank you for your help! I am sure I'll have more questions as I start to figure this out.
I saw that the IP plan is based partially on the mainstream's unfounded dread of saturated fat. The science is clear that lots of saturated fat on a truly low carb way of eating is healthy and healthier than much less saturated fat on a high carb low fat way of eating.

Mostly you don't need the protein shakes or bars because 1.5g/kg protein is not a huge amount of protein in the first place. You might supplement your protein intake with them though since the upper end of the protein range can be a lot to try to eat in one day. Testing blood ketones will give you a good picture of how the level of protein is affecting you.

I'm not real familiar with Stillmans but IP looks very similar. High protein, low fat and low carb.

this is what I ate:

B: 4 oz baked wild salmon, 3 oz steamed green beans, 3 Tbl homemade mayo, 1 Tbl coconut oil
L: 5.5 baked turkey tenderloin with 2 tbl mayo
D: 9 oz roasted asparagus with 2 Tbl EVOO, salad with lettuce, cucumber, carrots, 1 Tbl EVOO

1550 cal
149 gr fat
63 gr protein
30 gr gross carbs

I see some of you eat higher fat %. Is there a standard formula for percentage for fat/protein/carbs or you have to figure out what works for you? Is 60% fat/35% prot/5% carb correct, or the fat has to be higher?

Welcome to the thread Marika!

I have been doing Ideal Protein for the last 4 months and it's been great! I lost 30 lbs in the first 3 months! But I have been adding exercise back into my routine and not only has my weight loss stalled but I have been feeling hungry! I recently read "The Art & Science...Performance" and I am interested to see if NK would help me fuel my workouts and keep me from being hungry.

I read several posts back that there was someone else that came from IP but I don't remember who it was. I'm trying to figure out how to make the transition.

I'm also wondering about the fact that most of you eat hardly any veggies...IP requires 4 cups of low carb veggies a day. Is it part of the NK plan to cut out veggies?

I am looking forward to your responses and to getting to know all of you! This seems like a great group!!
Welcome to the thread MRSKUBY.
It might just be what you like. I love veggies and eat salads and veggies every day. Becky doesn't love them so she doesn't eat a lot of veggies.

That is, that conform to the 80/15/5 ratio
(or are higher in fat)?

I don't always eat dinner (prefer filling breakfast, moderate lunch [usually after 3pm], coffee & cream or salad or snacks in the evening), but sometimes I just need a few bites of something late in the evening to take my meds/vitamins. Plus I have a hard time falling asleep if I'm hungry. My usual go-to of cheddar cheese or cottage cheese is a bit high in protein.

I'm thinking maybe--
avocados
olives
pepperoni/salami
cream cheese
pork rinds*
hard-boiled eggs (or just the yolks?)
nuts (maybe not cashews or seeds?)

Sorry if this seems lazy but I just thought I'd ask in case anybody has already figured it out!

*Pork rinds nutrition info says 7g per serving, but also "not a good source of protein (incomplete). If eaten with other protein, it might become complete, but on their own, maybe okay? Thoughts?

Welcome to the thread Jenny,

Doesn't seem lazy, I love cream cheese as a snack, with a lil sweetener it is even better. Also I like broth with HWC.

This morning I got up early, had 2 eggs fried in bacon fat with melted CO shot and hit my 545a Jazzercise class. I did my WI after workout and found I was down to 169.6! WOOOOOOOO happy camper, especially cuz it's my TOM (started Mon eve...ugg LoL) which I figured wouldn't help me out much.

I grabbed 30g of almonds on my way out the door and when I got into work about 830 I was STARVING. I ate my ground hamburger with a string cheese then had coffee with HWC and CO. I'm feeling quite content with life right now, not stuffed and def not hungry.

I'm already up to 120g fat, 62g prot and 8g carb so far today - a little under 1400 calories. My target is about 1800 and with my workout this morning surely burning at least 450 I'm not too spazzed out that I have consumed the majority of my calories between 5a and 10a...My plan for the rest of today is tuna and CO and a TON of water - def adding the salt to my food not only makes it SO darn delicious but def helps me with water intake.

Hoping everyone has a fab day!
Yea!!! Keep going.

Me too! At first when I read about someone eating Cream Cheese with stevia I was like gross, but then gave it a whirl and OMG it's devine. Tastes JUST LIKE cheesecake and since I'm not a cook/baker that didn't seem so obvious to me until I tasted it LOL. I also like to add some cocoa and it's chocolate cheesecake, yum!

I'm super lazy. Don't like to cook and not very good at it when I do attempt but have tried a few things and find some turn out better than others.

Some easy recipes I found in an eBook I bought cheap called Fat Fast Cookbook, 50 easy recipes to jump start your low carb weight loss by Dana Carpender, Amy Dungan and Rebecca Latham.

You can make choc almond pudding with .5 cup sour cream, 2 tsp cocoa powder, 8 drops liquid stevia and 10 drops pure almond extract. Just stir and eat for 1 serv of 255 cals - 23.4g fat, 4.7g prot and 6.4g carb (1 g fiber in there). Found this recipe in that Fat Fast ebook.

I don't think I like Jalapenos but they are apparently good eaten with pork rinds and whipped cream cheese. You can add CO to the cream cheese for this as well.

I'm planning to try making creamed spinach. Bought a bag of frozen chopped spinach (10 oz) and you mix with 3 tbsp butter, 2 tbsp cream cheese, salt/pepper and this is for 2 serv.

The eBook mentions pecans and olives marinated in olive oil. Also a recipe for pumpkin pie cheesecake, which is the cream cheese with HWC, pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice and stevia. I think I saw this posted on here already but can also add some lemon juice for lemon cheese cake.

You can make butter roasted or curried pecans - looks pretty easy. Haven't tried it but many say the SF gelatin with HWC is delicious.

I def opt for EASY snacks/meals! I'm a lazy bones and always seems like I'm in a hurry so I have to make sure to have these things on hand to grab/go or make/whip up quick!

Still up my half pound from TOM woes, at 157... sometimes I feel like the scale is never going to budge again, I swear! Especially considering I ate all my meals at home yesterday for the first time in almost two months... that has to count for something, right?

Ah well, staying on plan again as usual today and hoping for the scale to start dropping tomorrow. At least I'm not bouncing up I guess

Really though, that is awful. I bet they were sloppy about covering their mouths/noses and not touching stuff.

I use ZiCam meltaways when I think I am fighting a cold or when I know I've gotten a cold. Seems to work really well. Back before LC/wheat-free, I'd get a bad cold at least once a year that kept me home in bed for at least a day. When I started using ZiCam I never did get a cold bad enough to keep me in bed again. The cold was less awful overall and it didn't last as long either.

If you try it get the homeopathic version not the ones with normal cold medicine mixed in.

I will look for ZICam. I haven't had a cold-sore throat in years. I knew I was in for it when she turned and sneezed on me. I freaked out--- right at the moment! Trying chicken broth with HWC. I know when I feel better I will get back into the groove.

By switching over to NK, I would def be adding fat/cal but could still remain in ketosis, right?

My current stats: 160 lbs, 5'5", medium frame...so goal would be 140 lbs.

If my goal weight is 140 lbs then my cal range should be around 1680, right?
Yeow. That is really low calories. No wonder you became hungry when you exerted yourself.

At that calorie level it doesn't really matter how much protein you were eating. You would have been ketogenic. I bet your cortisol was off the charts too. And I bet you lost some LBM that you'll end up putting back on.

So prepare yourself for some weight gain. If it doesn't happen that is wonderful. If it does happen you won't freak out about it.

No, 1680 is too low I think. Your current weight is 160 and you are more than a moderately active adult. (160/2.2)*35 = 2545 (at least) to maintain. So I think you should try to eat 2000 and see how it goes. Eat more if needed to provide the energy for your strenuous workout regimen.

It is possible that you need less calories. If the workouts you are doing and the high level you are doing them at are not building muscle mass, your resting metabolism will likely be lower than if you weren't doing any exercise at all. Lots of working out makes it hard to guestimate a good starting place for calories.

The thing to keep in mind about calories is that the deficit is what's important. So if you are expending 2000 calories and eating 1700 calories you'll lose weight. But if you are expending 4000 calories and eating 1700 calories you might not lose weight because it is too big of a calorie gap.

I'm a guy but really, really, really sedentary. Even as sedentary as I am I eat about 2300 calories and lose weight. You don't have to starve yourself to lose weight unless there is some medical condition present. Lots of the people that advocate very low calories, 1200 or whatever, don't usually mention that they are hypothyroid or very advanced in age.

Do you have any health issues? Take any meds Rx or OTC?

I've got a few podcasts you should listen to.

Google 'jimmy moore julia ross carbs' - this is about carb addiction but they discuss calories too. And you may need the stuff in here for your transition from IP to NK.

Google 'jimmy moore Episode 9 All Things Calories (Calories 101) Mat Lalonde' - LaLonde is not a fan of low carb but what he has to say about calories is eye opening.

Google 'jimmy moore atlcx-11-dr-jeff-volek' - should be the second link. This will help get your head on straight about saturated fats. Volek is the co-author of the Living and Performance books.

Google 'jimmy moore johnny bowden vitamins' - this is a great podcast about supplements you should be taking while LC.

Ugh. It was just like Carriers lol. I'd of been like Jim Carrey when he realized that the hot cop he'd been kissing was a man in drag.

Hope you don't get a full blown cold and get over it soon either way

I'm always really confused about calories myself... the deficit thing just never really registered in my head fully, as far as what I should be doing. Maybe it's the mental fog from my idiot thyroid or something that's making my brain so hard to get through to

Wondering if you might be able to help me reddarin, although I DO have some weird medical things going on so I know it'd be more of a ball park range rather than a more concise number.

I'm currently 157, I think my goal weight is probably going to be about 140-145... possibly a little higher depending on how my body reacts to exercise when I eventually add in some strength training to put on a little muscle/tone. I don't really know how to describe my activity level. I'm not COMPLETELY sedentary. Whenever I talk on the phone (sometimes hours at a time certain days) I'm constantly pacing around my apartment... I clean, I sometimes go for 20-30 minute walks a couple times a week depending on the weather/if I can get to the mall to walk there. I don't PURPOSEFULLY exercise very often though, although I'll be adding Callanetics soonish hopefully

I AM hypothyroid, but hopefully I'll be starting to get that under control soonish. I also have PCOS.

Anyway... any clue as to how many calories I should be consuming? I tried to figure it out myself a while back but was failing miserably. I've been eating 1500-ish calories a day pretty much. It seemed that when I ate less I just wasn't losing, although maybe that was just a natural mini-stall time for me? It's always 1500-something, but if I notice I'll hit 1600 or more I'll generally stop because I think that's too much. Today my planned calories are 1517, and yesterday they were 1589.
