I was inspired to go back to this way of life after trying a low fat, high carb diet for 2 weeks and I was miserable!! I am training for a 10 k race and my hubby was insisting I should eat more carbs. I want to get back down to my pre-baby weight of 128 and had really been running and weight training. Let me tell you, I started at 149 and after two weeks of strict calorie counting, running, and feeling starving all the time I had only lost 0.5 pounds. Was soooo frustrated!! So I binged last weekend on whatever food I wanted and weighed in Monday morning at 153.5 (my highest weight ever!) I promptly decided to go back to what I know works...I reread my art and science of low carb performance book and decided I am going to rock this way of life from now on. Sure enough, this morning I weighed in at 148- that's a drop of 4.5 pounds in 4 days!! I know mostly water but I am lower now than after 2 weeks of strict low cal/high carb/low fat dieting.

I am also feeling so much better, no hunger, feel satisified, no cravings. I can't wait to see how I do on my 4 mile run tomorrow. I will be sure to load up on some broth before as I'm still keto-adapting. I don't have a blood ketone meter, just going by the urine strips but so far I'm dark pink on the strips.

Sorry for the novel I just wrote...I'm just so excited about how good I feel! My pants even feel looser already

xo Ainsley
I haven't read the Performance book. How does it recommend handling bonking or hitting the wall early in the keto-adaptation phase?

There isn't a carb goal. Just a ceiling of 50g total carbs and less as you determine what level under that number works for you.

Great weigh in!

Red, Do you wear any glasses that have anti glare when using the computer?

When I have sinus headaches they can go on for weeks, sometimes the headaches start before I realize I have a sinus infection.

I didn't count, but it was probably well over 200. I was nibbling on all of those things I've been so good at avoiding lately. I had some chocolate pudding, a large bowl of gorilla munch, 3 gluten free waffles w a little jelly, and like 4 little tiny choc chip cookies. The only thing I really regret is the cookies bc of the gluten. I am pretty sure it was responsible for breaking my face out. My skin had been so clear during the time I was gluten free. I hope it doesn't take too long to get it out of my system.

I am still up a couple of pounds, but have been feeling great and all of the ketosis benefits -- lots of energy, no appetite, happy!

I skimmed over the heartburn discussion and wanted to add my experience so far. Normally when I would start an Atkins type LC, my hb would immediately go away. I was pretty worried bc that didn't happen w HF/MP, but now that I've been doing it for a bit over two months, I realize that it's probably been close to two weeks now since I've had hb. I don't know if that's bc I've adjusted to the woe or if its bc my weight is down a bit. I think it's the former bc I had chronic hb when I was 20 and weighed 120 pounds. I'm hoping its behind me.

I was just wondering if I could get some help figuring out my numbers. I currently weigh 148 pounds, goal of 125-130. I have an office job (sit at my desk mostly) 4 days a week but I also run 3-4 times at week for 40 minutes (about 4 miles) I have been sticking to 1200 calories on the days I don't work out but go up to about 1600 on the days I run. I have been keeping my carbs around 30 grams a day and was wondering what my protein grams should be? and fat grams? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
I look forward to joining you in some great discussions.

p.s. forgot to add I am 36 years old and also do 30 minutes weight training 2-3 times week too.

Continuing with the conversation about Jimmy Moore's experience....
I saw in the comments of his latest post that he said he started out at 85/12/3 and is closer to 80/15/5 now.

Browsing the performance book under the chapter about personalization, it says that "a little over half of the amino acids in protein are converted to glucose in the body, producing an anti-ketogenic effect.......on a low carbohydrate diet the proper balance of protein and fat needs to be carefully adjusted in order to achieve optimal fat burning. Again, this is an argument to get a hand held ketone meter and test your blood BOHB levels u til you've characterized your personal response."

Earlier in the chapter: "what ifminor changes in your intake of carbs and/or protein could boost you from 0.4 millimolar to 2.0 millimolar? At this lower level, ketones are doing little to feed your brain or help you build muscle, whereas at or above 2.0 millimolar BOHB, both would be working strongly in your favor."

So I guess we don't all respond the same to carbs and protein so there's a little experimenting to find the right balance. The ketone strips are around $2 each from an online pharmacy in Canada. They're pricy! But I'm happy to know where my ketones are.

It's all very interesting to me. Learning so many new things!

Even with my weight going back up a couple of pounds, I'm very happy! I expect to see another loss tomorrow.

Happy Thursday to everyone!

That is still great!!

That is an interesting observation. I do stare at the laptop screen a heck of a lot. I typically only wear reading glasses when reading a book so no glasses the rest of the time.

Red, Anti glare glasses might be a thought if you notice your headaches are worse after looking at the PC a while, or even driving at night.

You can pick up a pair pretty cheap at Zenni Optical online. I got a pair with RX on there for $15.00 with shipping. You could just leave out the RX and get the anti glare.

Of course who wants to wear glasses if they don't have to.
You may just try adjusting the screen of moving it.

It says to make sure to supplement with sodium prior to excercise. 1-2 cups broth. Also not to push it too hard in early phase, give it 2-3 weeks to start to see the full benefits from an endurance point of view. I will keep everyone posted how it goes. Are there any other runners on here?

thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

You could try a 3 day fat fast.

You could explore some of the short term quick weight loss plans. The only one that comes to mind is hGC.

Or even some long term plan that is more flexible for your current work situation. JUDDD, South Beach, Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, Paleo, Primal, etc?

You could just hit the gym and eat healthy without any particular plan.
I have no way of knowing truly because the lunch was so random, and i had no way of counting it. Impossible to know for sure!

Maybe i should do the fat fast, im going to start reading about it tonight.

I've done south beach before, and weight watchers - never looked into the others.

As for hitting the gym and eating healthy - i dont know WTH healthy even means anymore.

I did so many races last year! Three half marathons, a 10 miler and several 5ks. But haven't run once since my last half marathon in December. I need to get back out there. Was kind of waiting those 3 or 4 weeks to pass at the beginning before attempting it.

Please report back how the training goes.

PS: google Atkins Diet Geek. He's such a nice guy and has incredible recipes. He has lost 211 pounds on low carb and runs marathons low carb. All he takes during his marathons is electrolytes. No GU or anything else.

Lots of fat at once seemed to give me heartburn.
I treat
With baking soda in water. Recipe is usually on side of box. Taste foul first couple of times, but it works in under a minute. Beware, it's like the volcanos you make in school:
Acid + base= volcanic sized burp.

Thanks! I will let you know how the run goes tomorrow- I will be on day 5 by then- can't wait to see how it is. I would love to run a half maybe next year. I am doing a 5 k end of April and then a 10 K in May. I plan to conquer the 10 k distance this summer and shoot for the half's next summer thanks for the tip on Atkins diet geek, I need some good recipes. I have been reading Peter Attia's blog too, amazing info on low carb and training.

He said trial and error with the protein got him where he needed to be and consuming between 25-30g of carbs.

His latest NK update (300 day mark) says his goal is to be able to see his abs but has no weight goal. It will be what it will be.

Basically, it sounds like he took the recommendations from the Performance book and tweaked it to find out what worked for his body.
maybe that is what i need to try, lowering protein...teh no dairy thing hasnt really done anything for me and i havent felt any different btw

I'm not sure. I haven't checked it in a while. I didn't have any headaches when it was scary high before though. Are headaches a common symptom?
