hello from Luigi from the UK

hi, im new to this forum but not to life:)
I been reducing my carbs since aug, just worked out on an online tracker that todays ratio will be carbs/fat/pro = 9/73/18, my blood ketone reading this morning was 0.3 and blood sugar was 4.8mmol/L
i have introduced MCT oil today, see what happens there?
I have hepatitis c and no desire to lose weight, i want to be in nutritional ketosis for the health benefits.. i might have all ready registered here before but i couldnt remember so i created a new account.

Since i been taking readings with my blood ketone meter the highest recording i had was 1.1 but only once have i recorded over 1.0?

I take it TB means tablespoon in the US that's what I used it for

Your menu looks pretty great! Only thing I see out of line in terms of 'what' is carrots.

You could probably add some food as your menu seems a bit light.

are you asking me what is a carrot? not sure what the above line means?

ps...i tried the keto calculator page (might have been you) i saw listed on this forum last night, gonna eat to that protocol and see how my ketones do

clackley 12-19-2012 05:29 AM

Carrots are generally not consumed due to their higher carb count so I wondered if they were just a garnish or actual servings?

I do not follow the 'keto calculator protocol' (not even sure what that is) and am a fan of actual grams consumed rather than percentages. And those grams are particular to the individual. In my case, my grams of protein and carbs are quite low.

luigi_uk 12-19-2012 08:23 AM

i had one carrot and tested my blood glucose after, it was 100.8, since going low carb i test my reaction to foods as much as i can

Liugi,
Since you are not trying to lose weight I believe that your ketones won't get super high (unless perhaps you are doing very strenuous exercise). Anything above .5 indicates ketosis.

I know the keto calculator, EllaP first posted it. I think it's a great starting point--and gives options for tweaking to personalize the recommendations. For me the recommended protein is too high, but the lower end of the range given seems pretty good.

You will probably need to be very careful about eating enough protein not to lose lean body mass while getting your protein low enough for ketosis.

I exercise 6 times a week most weeks unless on holiday and you are right, I have only ever gone over 1.0 while testing with blood ketone meter. I think your right. But I'm sure volek and phinney low carb performance says you can be in maintenance and be in ketosis, will have to read it again, thx for the feedback

mom2zeke 12-19-2012 12:08 PM

Luigi--yes, a lot of the book is about getting into ketosis while keeping weight-stable. I have been in ketosis for at least 7 months (maintenance for about 4 months). My ketones readings are lower in maintenance than when I was losing.

If you're not getting good ketone readings you'll need to lower carbs and/or protein--the absolute gram values, not percentages. The percentages are kind of meaningless and from the Performance book you'll know that they don't recommend a specific ratio, just get your protein grams and carb grams right for you and then fill in the rest of your calories with fat.

Just did a test an hour after dinner 0.4 , this is on <25g carbs and 90g protein, is the food I eat today responsible for the reading I just took or is there a delay for the body to react?

mom2zeke 12-19-2012 12:39 PM

Your body's adaptation to ketosis happens over time, it's not something that's immediate. Are these new lower protein and carb levels for you? If so I would stick to the plan and give it at least 5 days, but it may take longer (2+ weeks) for your body to get into ketosis.

If this is the carb and protein level that you have been eating and you are not in ketosis, then you will need to adjust your levels.

It's new starting today, I got the readings from the keto calculator, as well as a couple of apps to log foods and get totals etc so today is first time logging properly too, I have been in mild ketosis i.e. below 0.5 for a couple months

Sounds good. You'll just need to be patient to see if it's working:).
