Here is the Taubes clip on YouTube...

.......

The Penn & Teller video about organics is an eye opener. Lots of foul language though.

Kudos to CT for letting us know about it. As much as I talk about pop culture I rarely watch TV and I avoid the news channels with a passion. I keep informed via sites and clips on the Internet

Yeah it seemed like it wasn't the full segment. That is why I looked for it on youtube to see if maybe they had more of it.

Blow chunks Never heard of that one. I think the high fat is also causing my nausea. Anyone else have input on that?

A nausea response to protein and/or fat can be caused by low stomach acid. If you notice that high fat/protein food (or really any meal) sits like a brick after you've eaten that is a sign of possible low acid. You can cure it with a little apple cider vinegar. If that does fix it then that was the problem. If that doesn't fix it then something else is responsible.

Jimmy Moore has a podcast that covers this. Let me see if I can figure out which one it was.

drjlocarb made this most excellent post on the NK and Sodium thread I started a day or two ago. I thought I'd quote her super duper info here too.

Geek alert!!

The body has to keep electrolytes in balance. That is, negative and positive ions have to be kept in a very narrow range to maintain life.

Positive charges pool= Cations

sodium - (Na+), accounts for 87%
potassium - (K+), accounts for 4%
Calcium, magnesium, unmeasured - (Ca+, Mg+, UC) , account for 9%

Negative charges pool = Anions

chloride - (Cl-), accounts for 68%
bicarb - (HCO3-), accounts for 13%
unmeasured -(UA), accounts for 19%

As you can see, Sodium and Chloride make up the bulk of the positive and negative ions in the blood and keeping them in range keeps the body in a certain acid/base balance.

When ketones are present and metabolized, they are broken down into a positive (+) and a negative (-) component. In order to eliminate these + and - ions, they have to be coupled with + or - ions in order to cross through into the urine. The neg. ketone segment is coupled with sodium (Na+).

When the total sodium content of the blood falls to a dangerous level, the body starts to use potassium instead. Potassium is very important for muscle and nerve function and the body MUST maintain usable levels in the blood. If blood levels fall, more is scavenged from inside the cells.

Aldosterone will cue the kidneys to save sodium and excrete potassium.
Insulin also affects sodium and potassium levels.

When we change from SAD to a ketogenic or NK type diet, we change insulin levels as well as ketone levels. Our Induction Flu is associated with the body shifting all these electrolytes back to normal levels with different mechanisms being responsible for that balance.

It"s no wonder our bodies go into a tail spin in the first week when we change the entire system so suddenly.

Hi everyone and good morning to all!

dryclean. I'm newer too - I just look around a lot!

tablis thanks for info on threader. No to serger. I don't do enough sewing (only fixing things for grandkids) so I'll stick with the old tried and true thingy that you put in the needle, insert thread and pull back out.

Thanks Red for posting the Taubes interview. I will go there soon.

Scales didn't change this morning, even tho I almost hit my calories/macros yesterday. Cal 2246, fat 77.5%, prot 19%, carb 3.5%

I think I'm messing up a bit. I started using Truvia instead of my other sweetners and just looked at the box and there are 3 grams of carbs in each one -- from erythritol. I haven't been putting that in my gram count. Yikes, they add up so assuming I should count them, I've been probably near 25 or 30 on the carb count -- brings the percentage up a bit...

Later Arlene

Arlene, what are you using the truvia in, coffee, tea, etc? Almost all the AS's in the packets have carbs because they add fillers to them. Liquid splenda is a great way to avoid this, or liquid stevia. Takes just 1-2 drops and no carbs. Netrition sells both of these.

Cut back on the BPC to help with appetite control Becky. The protein is very important to protect LBM.

Hi All
I was down .30 today which sounds fine on the surface, but............
I started my work out again and really pushed it. This would normally have given me a bump, plus I had a mandarin yesterday after having no fruit for quite a while, so I am very happy

Hi SG, agreed eating out is a killer. I've been looking at my Journals and even though I carefully make low carb choices (bunless burger, etc) the next day whamoo. Part of my additive theory.

I made some brown/wild rice last night for the family… what kind of idiot cheats on brown rice??argh. Before I knew it I was checking just to see if it had enough salt- big mistake. I ended up having a few spoons. I’m not sure how much. All the while my mind was warning me to stop bc it could take weeks to get back to where I am ketosiswise… thank goodness I got hold of myself b4 it was really over the top- today I don’t even understand what came over me—it just look so GOOD. But so not worth it. I logged it as ¼ cup but it may have been a bit more. Well even a ¼ cup totally wrecked my macros yesterday. This AM I used a ketostix and it was still dark purple so I hope that means I got away unscathed. I think one of Atkins books says that if you go a bit over one day you can make up for it by eating less the next so I’m going to try to go for zero carbs today.
I did the same thing yesterday. Somebody handed me a home grown Mandarin and I gobbled it down before I even thought about it. It was heaven But after I did think about it I moved on like it never happened and I'm still down. I'm trying real hard to figure out a WOE that allows for a little living too. So far, this is working.

Carbs or ok the fat is the problem not getting enough

It is funny you asked though because I was thinking about that yesterday with my new jeans and tee shirt. I can do one with that shirt which is tight and shows the belly and one with a normal shirt that doesn't highlight the belly. The befores are pretty freaking ugly frankly. Bare belly. Ugh.
Do we get the after 34s or 32s? Just asking

Welcome Dryclean!

I'm feeling really hungry now that I ate...I think I'm gonna drink a couple of huge glasses of water and make a coffee to postpone eating again so soon...

I went to hot yoga today- I notice that I feel more hungry on days that I go- but I love the way I feel after class, so i don't wanna stop going ....

I am way late to the December party! I had my physical last week and my doc is sending me for testing for celiac. My mother has it, so my doc wants to know if I have inherited it as well. I havent' been eating gluten containing things but to get my bloodwork done tomorrow, I've had to eat gluten foods for the last 4 days- so the blood will show whatever they are looking for to give a diagnosis...I feel like I'm so far behind everybody but I am still coming and lurking and reading because once I get some health issues investigated, I plan to get back to this WOE...love all the comments, now back to page 1 to catch up.

If you are hungry, eat. Just take pains to avoid carbs if you are going to go over your calorie goal. No worries

Edit: If you've eaten to protein goals then eat as fatty as possible to satiation.

Thanks Red, I'm hoping my results will be that I don't have thyroid issues and don't have celiac. With family history of both I wonder what my chances are of having neither? After my bloodwork tomorrow, I'm making the pumpkin bake to have for lunch after coming home from the lab...day 1(again!) of high fatLC starts tomorrow!
