It was Lo on the Novamax. :/ I'm ready to throw the thing out the window.

Overall, I'm having kind of a rough time right now - I've got a bad tooth, so I don't really want to eat anything. On the good side, it's keeping my calories down; on the bad side, it's hard to get much protein when I can't chew meat.

If you like eggs.... and if you can drink milk.... there you go!
Sorry about the tooth, though - ugh!

I got 3 meters, with offers and buying one on ebay just to get the strips. I might break out another one of mine and compare the two!!!

My reading this morning was 1.9, which is high for me.

FINALLY got my new box of ketone strips today and tested, mid-morning, after coffee with HWC and a little leftover pork steak (no coconut oil or MCT), and no exercise today (yet).

1.5 !! Yay!!

For the rest of the box, I'm gonna be good and only test first thing in the morning.

Great reading Lindsay!
Myles, just keep the carbs low, the protein at modified levels and the fat to fill up, the ketosis will come!

Well, I tested my ketones a few minutes ago (after waking up, going to the bathroom, then getting on the scale). I was extremely disappointed to see only .4 after that great 1.5 reading yesterday.

Because I don't see a great deal of variation in my diet from one day to the next, I'm wondering if anyone knows of possible reasons why ketones could go down for reasons other than diet?

At the time of testing yesterday, I had drunk three cups of coffee with HWC and Sweet & Low, then a few hours later about 3 oz (?) of leftover pork steak. Checked the mail, got the ketone strips, then excitedly did a test and got the aforementioned 1.5 reading. The rest of the day, I was out shopping with my husband, so we walked around a lot, but I did no formal exercise. We ate at Carrabba's Italian Grill, and I totally ate "by the book": a Caesar side salad with no croutons, lunch portion of grilled salmon in lemon butter sauce, and a few bites of a side of broccoli - I was full! I looked up the nutrition info on my phone so I could log it in once we got home. I wasn't sure if I'd eat anything the rest of the day, but later at home I realized my calories were kind of low for the day (1,250), although my protein (66g) would have been acceptable to leave alone. And I started to feel a tad hungry, so I fixed 2 scrambled eggs with butter and sour cream, 2 strips of bacon, followed by a serving of plain full-fat Greek yogurt.

The totals for the day were:

Cal: 1,840
Protein: 88g
Carbs: 20.5g
Fiber: 3g
Fat: 152.5g

It is not uncommon for me to go over 80g of protein a day (but less than 90g), and the other macros are not much different from any other day. On my previous box of ketone strips, I always tested above .5 and sometimes as high as 1.6, but I was bad about testing multiple times during the day, burning through the box of 10 in much less than 10 days.

I'm thinking...either some of my nutrition info was wrong and I really ate more protein and/or carbs than that, or my protein "ceiling" needs to be lower than I thought (75g?), or I had a bad reading on my meter (or any combination of the above!). Actually, would it be possible that there could be a delayed effect from food eaten more than 24 hours prior to the test? Like something eaten on Thursday that wouldn't lower ketones on Friday morning, but would by Saturday morning?

Oh well, for now I'm going to attempt to refrain from testing any more today, limit my protein to 75g today, and just test again tomorrow morning!

Lindsay--it could be any number of factors (including hormones) that made your ketones test low. Personally I would suspect the restaurant food. But I think you have a good plan going forward. Are things moving on the scale?

What did you eat yesterday?

I have no knowledge of BG or what it means. But these meters aren't 100% accurate so I wouldn't worry about one reading.

After 9 days of readings over .5, today I was .4.

Contributing factors: TOM arrived and I had a few cocktails which led to overeating cheese and nuts yesterday evening. Darned hormones get me every time!

Interesting idea! I am due for TOM any day now. I always wonder about that though, because it is somewhat of an "artificial" TOM. I supposedly went through menopause already, but after I started taking a low dose BC pill, I've had a regular cycle (but without any PMS symptoms). So, I have some estrogen and progesterone in my system doing their thing, but most (all?) of it is coming from a pill.

About the scale, it's not moving much at all...The initial 3 or 4 pounds I dropped are still gone, but other than that, it just goes up a pound then down a pound, etc. I'm gonna consider it a huge breakthrough if I ever get the needle to point just a millimeter below 140 (analog scales!). I have been on NK about 5 weeks now and feel great, so I'm not really too discouraged.

I posted this on another thread. If you're in ketosis you may need to lower your fat to start losing again.

And hormones are hormones, even if they're from a pill. People are reporting that their ketones are lower during TOM, but there's no study to verify that.

My ketones were lower this morning too, must be something in the air Mine were 0.7 but BS was 87. Myles, sorry, I don't know how to convert your numbers of BG to what we use in the US. Mine range from in the 80's to high 90's each AM, and like Kristn said, the meters can give you different readings at the same time of day. I just look for mine to be in the range I want them to be.

Someone needs to write a book on blood ketones, or maybe already has and what makes them go up and down. I am totally confused on how it all works but just happy to be losing slowly while in ketosis.

I hit a new low today of 190.4, 180's here I come

Congratulations on a new low Buffy!!!

I believe that Phinney and Volek are writing a book on blood ketones and weight loss (at least that's the rumor). I can't wait for it to come out. Dr. Phinney did say in his interview on long-term stalls that they're busily testing different people for ketone levels. Hopefully they'll have more data to help us all out!

OH wow, I can't wait for that book.

Thanks, I am so excited to be nearing the 180's. I think I am falling into the same pattern you experienced, where I only lose during a couple of weeks a month, and not much, the other 2 weeks I struggle along, getting a little worried about not seeing any loss.

There are so many things that can alter our BG. Stress, not feeling well, fever, a cold, I wouldn't worry about that number unless it consistently stays there and you are eating very LC. Then that number is kind of high.

Myles....I was about the same as you with a fasting BG of 106 this morning. And my ketones dropped back down from .6 yesterday to .3 this morning.

Buffy....great news on yet another drop on the scale. I'm picking up what you are losing....stop sending me those unwanted pounds!!!!!

My TOM arrived today too ,but I didn't test ketones this morning. This will be the first time I'm testing ketones while I ahve TOM, so we'll see what it does to me.

Kristn- i need to check your losing menu. I have been eating cheese, and I think I need to eliminate it (except maybe for cream cheese) in hopes of losing better (or at all)

I should mention this is only after about 7 or 8 hours of fasting i didnt sleep much and tested right away when i got up.. most mornings are after 10-11 hours of fasting

.4 blood ketones and 5.8 blood glucose (104.5) ... weight close to the same

I am surprised since i sort of pigged out yesterday (still all LCHFMP) but i surely went over on carbs and maybe protein.... hrmm

Just a quick update today: TOM started yesterday evening, this morning ketones are up to .9 and weight is down a pound-ish to 142-ish. (It's hard to tell on an analog scale when my eyes haven't fully adjusted to being awake yet!)
