Not gaining is almost as good as losing, Kristn!

Since I reduced my fat the other day, I have lost 1 pound on the scale, and my body fat went from 35.4% back down to 34.4%.

And I have not been hungry or tired, so I guess the amount of fat I am eating is enough for my energy needs.

It must be TOM soon because I weighed at 180 this morning. Grrrrr....

Wednesday is my weigh in at the gym. They have a super sophisticated scale that measures how much my skeleton weighs, my muscle, my water, and my fat. It measures muscle tone as well. I am excited to see what the personal training 3 times a week is doing for me as well as the diet.

That's terrific news Rebecca! Feeling satisfied and losing is a nice place to be.

I have been feeling great since last week, lots of energy and not hungry or tired. I was dragging a bit when I first started this (possibly due to reduced energy intake), but last week everything seemed to change. It feels like back in 2001 when I was first on Atkins. I had so much energy and I wasn't hungry then--and now it's back. I think there's something to this ketone adaptation!

At least you know why you're up--it will be gone once TOM is over.

That scale at the gym sounds really cool. Remind me again how long you've been working with a trainer? It will be great to see how much that has effected your LBM and fat.

Darn!

I called to make an appointment to get a DXA scan and the only place in the area that does them without a referral doesn't do them on Saturdays (maybe by the end of the year). They are only open for DXA during my work hours and are across the water with very bad traffic.

Bummer.

Hi mayleesa--your protein looks a little high. There are a bunch of calculations that people are using based on lean body mass. I am about your same height with LBM of 120 (goal weight 150) and I try to shoot for between 60 and 70 grams of protein per day.

I am on my 4th week of training. I am hoping to see a change on Wednesday! It feels like The Biggest Loser. I am thinking J will take some water pills to help balance my system a bit.

On another note I happened to stumble across a blog that was talking about "bullet proof coffee" (not sure if anyone has heard of it but I've seen it on quite a few paleo blogs recommending it)

Basically on this guys blog I believe his name is Dave Asprey the creator of "upgraded coffee" founded this protocol for "bullet proof coffee" which is basically IF with high quality coffee, 2 tbsp of MCT oil, and about 2 tbsp of kerrygold unsalted butter... and based off of his experiences its suppose to be not only a great tool for putting you and keeping you in nutritional ketosis but also help you lose weight. He swears by this protocol and he's actually also been interviewed on Jimmy Moore's podcast.

It's quite interesting. And I've seem quite a few people encourage MCT oil as a great supplement for becoming keto adapted and as a weight loss tool such as Petter Attia.

Unfortunately I'm not too sure on how to post links....but if you google "bullet proof coffee his protocol should pop up!

Ketones R Us

Good afternoon ladies,

Got my meter last week, and was dismayed with the .5 reading but it's in the range. I have taken a few more measurements than I should have as I had the strips mixed up with the glucose ones! I have seen up to 1.7.

Still trying to get my head around the eating fat, and hiding it from my wife who thinks I am nuts. Butter on veggies? (She is probably correct) According to her steak and eggs are both pure fat. I have to go to the closet to eat my coconut oil!

The strips are a little cheaper up here, but still about $2.50 each. And of course no pharmacist even knows what they are.

Anyway, I am learning how to eat less protein and more fat. Was surprised I only got to 75% yesterday. Today is better.

Welcome loop4yah and Jimtoslim!

Jimtoslim--you don't necessarily need to force the fat. Most of us are in the 70-75% range. In the book Phinney & Volek suggest 65-85% fat for nutritional ketosis. The fat is adjusted up or down depending on your energy balance and goals.

Okay and on a totally different note I have a question about cooking... Kind of a silly question so please bear with me for a second (I'm only 21 never cooked a day in my life so I guess there is a first for everything haha) Anyways I found this amazing recipe for a crock pot pork stew....but one of the ingredients is cutting an apple in half and placing it in there as the stew cooks.... So I'm wondering if I follow the recipe and after the stew is finished if I just throw the apple out and don't eat it do I still need to count it towards the total carbs in the recipe?! Sorry I know such an odd question but I'm new to this whole counting carbs thing lol

Most of the Juice will still be in the stew. I would just omit that from the recipe.

Hi, and welcome, those of you who recently joined this group.

Kristn, congratulations on your continued weight loss and clothing adventures.

I am expecting to get my meter sometime this week. I seem to be doing something right, since I was down an inch in my waist measurement this morning, after a great weekend of NOT working overtime, catching up on sleep, and drinking water like I was preparing for a drought.

Looks like we have the same goal! I'm sitting at my 4th day at 126.6. I don't fluctuate much (that's good) but I don't lose fast either (sigh, a pound a week is making me thrilled!). I'm sticking to 40-50 grams protein (though bumped up to 58 this weekend for my anniversary steak dinner), but suspect you have higher lean body mass than me...I'm a low muscle type.

Good morning everyone!

Tatsnook--persistence and consistency! I think lowering your protein is a good move! You are a small person so your protein intake should probably be relatively low.

I am up a pound this morning, but I'm not surprised. I can feel TOM coming and I expect to be up and down a few pounds for the next 1-2 weeks. I usually stay off the scale at this time, but I'm trying to look at this as an experiment so I'll keep weighing. I may check ketones during TOM to see if it has an effect.

Since lowering my fat three days ago, I have lost 1.6 pounds on the scale and lost 1 point on my body fat percentage (35.4% to 34.4%). I also lost 1/2" around my waist and 3/8" around my hips.

I guess I was just eating too much fat. Even so, I am still at an average of 78% fat, down from 85%. If I hit a stall again, I guess I will drop it a little more. Until that happens, I will stick with the amount of fat I am eating now.

Congratz Rebecca thats awesome!

So I tried "bullet proof coffee" this morning with the upgraded coffee...

And all I have to say is wow... The coffee really does have a great flavor but with the MCT oil and the butter added....It gives you great energy... Did my morning workout and it was great, keeps you full until lunch, and I really did feel a lot more focused and alert!

More Testing

Since last Friday I've been eating cream cheese for lunch and more protein for dinner (5-6 ounces). I was a bit concerned that I might be being knocked out of ketosis after the higher amount of protein at dinner so I decided to check tonight. Two hours after dinner my blood ketones were 2.6. This is a bit more satisfying to me than 3 ounces of protein for lunch and 3 ounces for dinner so I'm glad that it didn't effect my ketosis.

That's reassuring, Kristn. I do find it necessary to strategize in terms of where to "spend" my protein. If I don't eat a fair amount of protein before I start work, I end up miserably hungry and unable to concentrate at work, so I'm doing more of my protein in a late breakfast and then somewhat less at dinner.
