Thanks to all of you for chiming in and answering my questions and concerns. Day 6 and it is going great, sneaked a peek at the scale but will wait until my weigh day, Monday, to share.

Solved my craving for a snack/sweet/maybe chocolate last two nights with a diet root beer float after dinner. Just really did the trick. One diet root beer, over ice with about a TBLS of heavy whipping cream poured over. I even had two last night. I was going to do cream cheese but was pretty close to my calorie limit so this worked great.

Drjlowcarb: Thanks, I stand corrected.

According to Volek & Phinney in The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance, p 90, blood ketone levels usually consist of a 4-to-1 ratio of BOHB to AcAc. I'm sure there is variation, but it sounds like they tend to track each other.

On page 91-92, they state the urine "test has been found to inaccurately reflect actual blood ketone concentrations in several studies. This is because keto-adaptation involves complex changes in the way the kidneys filter blood and thus excretion of ketones. As a result, urine ketones may decrease even as blood values stay in the desirable range. Therefore, although this method is practical and relatively inexpensive, its results should be viewed with a considerable degree of caution."

Hope this helps.

Terry

That will naturally reduce your calories.

And I think your goals are good. Mine were similar and my calories ended up in the 1200-1400 range.
Thanks Rebecca. According to that, my calories should range between 1216 and 1637. Also, these are just my initial figures as I don't have my meter yet and just kind of starting from scratch.

Wow!! It's great to see everyone's success!

Congratulations amlyjo, juliekaboolie, Terry, and g3rmanchik on your losses! Hopefully I didn't miss anyone--the thread is moving fast!

Buffy-can't wait to see your numbers on Monday!

portcop-15 days on plan is a great goal--please do report in on how you are doing. I found that my weight drops on this plan went in fits-and-starts. I would drop 3 or 4 pounds in a week and then a few weeks of bouncing.

I finally had my hydrostatic body fat test this morning before kettlebells. I had to wear a swim cap because I am getting my hair colored this morning and it can't be wet so some air was trapped under the cap and may have thrown the test slightly off. I am also puffy from PMS (up almost 2 pounds) so that may also have effected the test.

That being said, my BF% was 26.3%! I am actually very happy with that number. According to the chart that Rebecca originally posted I am in the fit to athletic category for my age. My current goal was 25% BF (based on my scale which was giving me ~30% BF) but I think I'm going to lower my goal to 20% BF. I am giving myself a long time to get there, but I would be interested to see what that looked like.

So my new protein range for my goal BF% is 72-120. I plan on keeping carbs below 30 and on the kettlebell days eating my largest protein/carb meal of the day within the one hour window.

That's so awesome Julie!

My foods for today:
B: coffee w/HWC and stevia, 1/2 avocado, 4 strips bacon
L: 4 HB eggs w/2 T mayo
D: hamburger patty, 2c broc/cauli w/cheese and butter
Sn: evening coffee w/HWC & stevia
Late night snack: 1/2 serving of the "milkshake" I mentioned earlier, heated and with 1 T coconut oil

This = 1,862 cals 18 carb 164 fat 62 protein

I'm pleased with this plan. I really want to up my Co oil intake but I thought that cooking savory things with it was Can. not. do. it. And I don't like it in my coffee. So I found if I save some kind of hot drink at night as my "dessert", it can go well with that. Either hot chocolate (the sugar free kind but it has too many carbs still) or better yet this almond milk/HWC treat I posted. I have always loved warm milk at night, so this is a great alternative and tastes delish to me with the CO. But that's still only one T. Will have to find a way to get another one in there. Maybe some macaroons mentioned. I'd sure love some kind of chocolate!

What about the fat bombs? I find they are totally satisfying for my chocolate cravings. I use really high-quality dark cocoa powder and they're heavenly.

Have you posted your recipe? I'd love to see it. There are SO many and I don't have any whackadoodle ingredients on hand (by that I mean special sweeteners in liquid form).

I did make some fat bombs mentioned somewhere. They were 1/2 c salted butter, 1/2 c co oil, and 1/2 c natural peanut butter. I didn't add any sweetener to them and I wish I had. Good in kind of a salty/nutty way, but would have been a good sweet/salty thing if I had added some stevia. I divided this mix into 12 portions so I am not getting a pure 1 T of co oil in each one. I will keep these in my freezer but would love to make some with just co oil, cocoa powder, stevia, and maybe a few nuts and unsweetened coconut. That's the one thing I don't have around is the coconut.

Here's what I consumed yesterday:
Protein: 122 g (20%) ----------------- [week avg: 110.8]
Carbs: 47.5 g (7%) (incl 15.2 g fiber) -- [week avg: 44.2 -15.3]
Fat: 200.9 g (73%) ------------------- [week avg: 188.5]
Calories: 2,423 (Est. burn rate 2,897) -- [week avg: 2266 - 2906]

This morning:
Weight: 178.8 (up 0.8) (-4.2 since starting NK Aug 30)
BMI: 22.96 (target 21.83)
Ketones (urine): 15 mg/dl
Blood Glucose (fasting): 104

It's not surprising to see my weight go up, after dropping 1 pound yesterday. My intake of protein and carbs were essentially at my max targets (for now). I'll adjust these, if needed, after I see the results of the blood ketone tests. (My test strips are scheduled for Fedex delivery today.)

Not sure what's going on with my BG, but some variation is typical for me. Maybe the slightly higher protein & carbs than the last few days was an issue. Meter readings also vary somewhat from test to test, as others have noted.

Keep clam,
Terry

There are some links to fat bomb recipes on this page. I use Rebecca's recipe and sub macadamia nut butter for the almond butter and liquid splenda for the stevia. Her recipe is pretty simple and delicious and uses stevia if that's what you have on hand!

Those fat bombs were really the first thing I have successfully used liquid stevia in and liked it. I used 40 drops.

Christina, I went to Mom2Zekes link to NK Challenge thread info and posts of interest, then clicked on weight and protein goals to get mine. I am sedentary and older so I used a higher BF goal that most. That is just what I am starting out with until I get a meter and see if I am losing on those numbes. Then I will tweak.

I did notice your calories were higher and wondered how you figured yours, LOL, but we all have to tweak our own to get to the correct numbers for us, right?

Wow.....so many of you are on a roll with weightloss with the changes made....can it really be as simple as upping fat and lowering protein? We obviously have all been doing Atkins/low carb/induction type eating and majorly stalled. And now, we're on a roll. Fabulous. Julie, I'm just so happy for you!!!! Be prepared for the scale to jump back and forth. Just don't give in.

Amy...you sound like me with the "hot drink". What I did was get dark powdered cocoa (unsweetened) and put HWC and water (to create a fatty milk) and the cocoa powder with SF chocolate syrup...and then made hot chocolate and put whipping cream on top! Very "legal" and got in more fat with the cream and not much in the way of carbs or protein that way. The birthday cake thing made me smile AND groan. I found that any little cheat really undid me! And it was hard to get back on track.....

Buffy...love your "root beer float" drink!!!! What fun. I'll have to try that one as I used to adore root beer freezes (root beer and vanilla ice cream). Your say is much easier. Thanks for the idea!

Kristn......26.3% bodyfat?!?! Wooo hooo!!!!! Even with all the things that could have made it higher (TOM/cap, etc.). That is just fantastic. You should be so pleased! Don't go too low now and become underweight/underfat!

For those of you that are not wanting to do the coconut oil in coffee/tea, I'm loving the MCT oil as it has to flavor change and just makes the coffee richer tasting! I did 2 TBSP yesterday and it was too much....1 TBSP this morning and that worked great! Maybe I'll have another cup later with another TBSP of it!

Have a super day everyone!

For those of you who have been doing this for awhile, how long did it take before ketosis kicked in? I find that I am very hungry/weak even though by lunch I've eaten 96g fat, 11g carbs, 48g protein, and 1100 calories! Craziness!!!! I wonder if the caffeine in my coffee plus coconut oil is kinda jacking me up? I've had 2 cups of water today, too. Here's what I've eaten:

Breakfast: 1x Coffee w/2 oz hwc, 1 tbsp CO turkey burger (homemade) w/1 oz cheddar, 1/4 c blueberries (fresh from the garden!!)

Lunch (so far): 1 oz cheddar cheese w/2 tblsp butter (kerrygold), water

What do you think???

Edited to add: I've done a yoga session and washed my dog, too. Not sure that matters, but I thought I'd throw that in! LOL!

I was gonna get the meter but couldn't justify the cost. The test strips were $50 and I had to get lancets??

Like almost $100 total..does that sound right??

Julie...here's my guess from my experience. I need FOOD! I try to get my fat from real foods like bacon, eggs, fatty meats like chicken thighs (not breasts) and such. Turkey meat is very low in fat and so would not be filling (IMHO). And fruits of any kind for me cause problems...it's that "Atkins ladder" thing. I can do 8 or so little raspberries, but no more. 1/4 cup is a lot of berries when you count them individually. That is the hardest part for me. Giving up the fruits/carbs....veggies would be better if you are using carbs.

My "guess" is that you might not be quite so hungry if you had food for fat instead of fat to get the fat grams in to start.....can you eat bacon and eggs for breakfast (I know some hate eggs!!!) I have 2 eggs in butter or CO, and 4 strips of bacon almost every morning with a cup of coffee with 2 TBSP of HWC (40%) and now 1 TBSP of MCT oil too. That usually holds me until around 2 PM and I am not hungry. It's about 1/2 or less of the calories you just consumed, and your lunch nearly made me cry....2 tbsp of butter and one oz of cheddar? Oh Julie...you need more FOOD!

So..since you asked what I think...that is "my" take on it. And I'm new to this compared to the others.

Another thing to consider. Coffee is a diruetic (can never spell that word!), and for each cup of coffee consumed, you need a cup of water to "nullify" it -- so your 2 cups of water taking you to noontime today is really only one cup...you need LOTS more water. I consume 10-12 cups a day. I set out 3 jugs of water every morning and have to drink them all...they contain 10 cups...and I usually have another couple cups with my PM "bone supplements" before bed. I usually chug 2-3 cups before I even eat breakfast. The body is dehydrated bigtime from sleep. Hope that gives you some food for thought at any rate. WATER!!!! Drink water!!!! (and eat more FOOD)

I followed the advice from Kristn and others and ordered online at American Diabetes Wholesale. Got my meter, pkg of 10 ketone strips 12 glucose (I think), the lancets and lots of info within 3 days for about $35. Wish I had ordered the special for $39.99 that had the extra 50 glucose strips!!!!

I ordered over Labor Day weekend and it was sent out first thing Tuesday and I got it on Thursday! Fast!!!! I think it's the Novo Max Plus???

LOL!
Julie, are you supplementing with sodium? I feel weak when I don't add extra salt to my food or drink a cup of broth. A tsp of salt in a cup of warm water or a tsp of bouillon and I can honestly feel the fog clear and energy come back. A well-formulated ketogenic diet has to have enough sodium and magnesium in it! That's why so many people get Atkins flu.

THANK YOU!!!!! This definitely helps and I think you are correct. I'm going to re-evaluate my food choices. I did question my sanity on the blueberries. I know better.

Julie you might also want to get some protein in at lunch...split your protein evenly between all your meals if you can. Although we have to limit protein somewhat it is uniquely satisfying. And meat/eggs will be more satisfying than cheese/dairy protein...
