kettlebell peeps
I need some ideas to develop a workout routine.
Should I do it 3x a week, 5x? daily? I am not interested in using them as usual dumb bells and doing a routine based on free weights. Has anyone ever used Pavel's dvds? (the russian kettlebell guy) Any other dvds you would recommend? |

Hey, fellow KB peep checking in.
![]() Unless you're thinking of doing an upper & lower body split, you want to allow 48 hours between your KB workouts. Since I've never heard of anyone doing an UB/LB split with KBs (although it could be done), you're better off training with them only 3x a week with an off day in between. ![]() How heavy is your KB? I've never actually used Pavel's workouts, but heard that they're top notch. I have a few of the Iron Core workouts by Sarah Lurie, who is an RKC trainer, but normally just do my own thing. ![]() Whatever you do, do not get Jillian Michael's KB workout - her form is atrocious, and she actually has people doing some moves that could cause serious injury! Why she did a KB workout when she's not RKC is beyond me. ![]() |

Firm Hottie thanks!!!
I have a 5kg kettlebell and dh has an 8kg one. Heavy enough for all the exercises I;v e tried, a bit too heavy for some. I haven't heard of Sarah Lurie, so will check that out. Not a big J Michaels fan to start off with, so I'm kind of glad her dvd is not good |

No problem, Speedy!
Depending on what you're doing, those sizes will work for you for now. The 5k is good for quicker moving, more metabolic stuff, and the 8k is better for swings and heavier stuff. I like to use my 7 & 10# KBs for workouts like the Firm's Transfirm Your Trouble Zones, and my 20# KB for Sarah's Iron Core workouts. I need to get a heavier KB, and am thinking of getting a 35# KB, because anything lighter would be a waste... I'll be heading off for a week-long beach vacation next week, and will be bringing my KBs and KB workouts - they'll perfect for the condo we'll be staying in. I'm really looking forward to KBing all next week! ![]() Last edited by Firm Hottie; 09-14-2010 at 11:14 AM.. |

Cool - which one did you get? I have Iron Core Vol. 1, and really like it.
Yep, I'll be taking my KBs and workouts with me on vaca. Just because I'll be on vaca doesn't mean I can blow off my workouts or eat like crap! ![]() |

Great - I think that you'll really like Vol. 1. Sarah is really great about showing & stressing using proper form. Just be advised that most kettlebell workouts would probably be classified as "dry" and somewhat boring compared to traditional home workouts. Once you get the form down, you can always do what I do - turn the TV's volume down and the stereo's volume (with some music that you love) up!

Just bought a Danskin 10# KB for $3 thru Goodwill. (Yay me !!!) Now, I don't know what to do with it. LOL Any tips ? I want to strengthen my core and try to get this residual fat off of my lower abdomen. I've gone from 199 to 164 in two years, with a goof up by me that bounced me from 160 back up to 185. This time, however, I've realized that I have to weight train in order to NOT cannibalize my muscles, as I did last year. (Half of the weight lost HAS to have been muscle. I weigh 165 but my clothes fit BETTER than they did at my lowest last year. Live and learn, I guess.)
Regarding the KB (again): Should I invest in a heavier KB ? If not now, how soon ? Thank goodness you don't care for Jillian either. She smirks too much on Biggest Loser. I'm tired of her and getting that way over Bob. (Don't get me started on product placement on the show lately.) TBL used to be a HUGE inspiration before marketing started making it unwatchable. ![]() Thanks for the advice !!! |

I've started doing Pavel's Enter The Kettlebell program.
Deceptively simple, 4 workouts per week. Monday and Thursday: 10 minute warmup, 12 minutes of kettlebell swings Tuesday and Friday: 10 minute warmup, 5 minutes of Turkish get-ups. When I first saw the workout sheet, I thought "a FIVE MINUTE workout?" Those turkish get-ups, though, work virtually every muscle group. Sounds very basic, but I'm getting results so I'm happy. |

JSmooth619: Good question. I started to go to WallyWorld and get a 5# and a 15# to go with it. I'm totally lost.
Waiting on the video to get here.speedymagee: I don't like JMichaels. Never have. She smirks too much when she's "coaching" (aka yelling). |

I started Iron Core yesterday. It is really great! I'm sore for sure, but in a good way. Thanks so much Firm Hottie for this recommendation. Hope your trip was good too!
I agree about J Michaels. She puts me off and I wouldn't have bought anything by her even if I was desperate. One workout hardly qualifies me as an expert though, so I wouldn't know what to suggest JSmooth. You could post a question in the musclematters forum, you might get some help there. |

It's a great workout, isn't it? Were you able to get through all three circuits?I did IC on Monday, then did a slow and heavy workout yesterday. I'll be doing IC again tomorrow, with a friend to introduce her to kettlebells. She's getting bored of her Denise Austin workouts and is looking for something new and exciting. I think kettlebells will fit the bill nicely. |

I made it through one circuit. I think I could have done more, but I didn't want to go crazy my first time out. As it was I was pretty sore the next day.

My friend made it through all three circuits! Granted, she was only using a 10# KB while I was using my 20# KB, but she still got through all three circuits, plus the sets of push-ups, tricep dips and bicep curls that I ended each circuit with.
![]() She really liked the workout and said that she's definitely going to get it, as well as her very own KB this weekend. ![]() Speedy - did you see that Sara has a new Iron Core KB workout? It's called Warrior, and looks good. I must have it! ![]() |

Hi Jane.
![]() I've gotten my kettlebells at Target, and am very happy with them. The brand is GoFit, and they normally carry the 7# (pink), 10# (yellow), 15# (red), and 20# (blue) in the store. I also got my Iron Core workout there too. Hope that helps. |

$15 for a 15# KB is a great price!
![]() Do you remember what brand it was? If you go back to get one, make sure that you feel the handle of the bell. You want it to be smooth, and not have a very obvious seam on the underneath. If it does, stay away from it as it'll mangle up your palms pretty badly. You'll only need one KB to start, and I think for that price, the 15# is fine. You'll outgrow it for swings, but it'll still be nice to have for presses, windmills, and Turkish Get-ups. I did Iron Core Vol. 1 again today. I added in some upper body work again - 10 push-ups, 10 tricep dips and 10 bicep cruls before starting each circuit. I also cut the rest time between exercises down to about 10 seconds. It was a great workout! |

Do you use the wrist protectors like they use in the dvd? I would like to get some, but would rather not spend the money to order from her as I feel hers are a little on the pricey side. Maybe a sports shop would have some?

I personally don't, as the only exercise you might need them for are cleans, and later on, for snatches. I think it's better to learn how to manipulate the kettlebell properly so that you don't bang your wrists/lower forearms in the first place.
But if you just want some protection, regular cheap tennis wrist bands would work just as well. ![]() |

I was at Target yesterday and they had all 4 of Sarah Lurie's KB workouts as a special 4-pack for $14.99. It's in white & light blue packaging and not very noticeable.
(Kettlebells the Iron Core Way vol. 1, KBICW vol.2, Iron Core Warrior and Iron Core Boot Camp) |

I got them!
![]() I forgot about the blue & white packaging, and didn't see them them at first. Seriously, I was practically panicking when I didn't see them! That packaging is very easy to miss, especially since it looks nothing like the individual workouts, and looks a lot like a number of other combo packs that Target is offering. But I finally saw them, and bought them. $14.99 for 4 RKC certified workouts is a steal! Thanks again for telling us about them, Minnie! ![]() |
