This week has been crazy! Monday is a new day and I'll be able to pick up where I left off with my work outs. I haven't worked out since Tuesday. My grandpa passed away, and the funeral was 550 miles away in North Dakota. Long week...
I am starting Body For Life on Monday. Im very excited about it!
Ileen. I have found that thread where you and lite were posting your menus. That is very helpful. I'm going to slowly start adding all those good starchy carbs back into my menu again.
Hopefully I can repair my Metabolism and get things moving again. I think that those good carbs, will help, and a new exercise plan. I was killing myself with cardio, and weight training directly after. Now, Im just going to do the BFL plan, cardio 3 days, then alternating days of weight training.

Sorry about your grandfather, Jami! BFL is a good program...I did it about ten years ago.

I am on my second day of low carb. I forgot how much I like it! I actually feel pretty good...

Thanks Celeste and Rachel. It was a tough week. I feel so bad for my mother.

I Love LCing too Rachel.
Did you do the BFL challenge and had your before and after photos sent in? Do you have any tips? I think my LC will end up being much higher than a regular LCer though.
Lately my carbs have been in the 30-50 total ranges.
I'm trying to change thing up a little to evolve into the BFL eating plan. Slowly LOL
Most of my starchy carbs will be my first 2 or 3 meals, then the rest will be LC meals.

Jami, I did the BFL nutrition with the workouts. I was eating about 120g protein/120g carbs a day. I went from 138 pounds to 136 pounds in twelve weeks, but also went from a size 8 to a size 4. I DID send in pics, and although I didn't place or win, I had a friend who was a semi-semi-finalist. I did it with a group that originated here at LCF...one of the most fun and most motivating times of my life as we were all SOOOOO into it.

I'm doing carb cycling now....three days of low carb, one day of high carb. I am looking forward to dropping my last 8-9 pounds...sometimes I feel like my body prefers adding muscle to dropping fat!! I keep seeing about 140 (139.2, 139.6 140.4 etc...you know the drill, I think you are in the same place as me...) on the scale, and my goal weight is 131 (I am 5'5 and currently at 105 pounds of lean body mass....)

To add: on my high carb days, my trainer does have me eating most of my carbs before 6PM...I workout at 4:30.

Back to weight-lifting today.
Pilates moves to warm-up - the 100, leg kicks, leg lifts, 15 planks @ 10 counts & 15 girly push-ups.

My w/o was Venuto's workout B
25 deadlifts @ 62 lbs
20 shoulder pr @ 30 lbs
40 hip extentions
20 pullovers @ 30 lbs
30 reverse crunch
30 cross-knee crunch
20 curls @ 30 lbs
20 tricep ext @ 20 lbs

20 minutes light jog on the rebounder

Did a double-scoop protein shake before lifting, but only drank 2/3 of it. Finished the rest post workout to help with my jello arms and legs.

Getting more protein over the past few days has helped my workout quality already. I was able to do a bit more today and recover more quickly. I really think upping my protein some and lowering my fat intake a bit is just the thing I need. I've been reading Lyle McDonald and the PaNu blog and I think tweaking my plan a bit using aspects of each of these will make a BIG difference for me!

As they say on TV - STAY TUNED!

Rachel. I think you and I ARE on the same page! Im the same way with fat to muscle. LOL Its so annoying. You'd think ove the course of 4 months something would budge! That is why I am going for BFL.
You had some amazing results! I hope I can achieve that as well. I have never in my life been a size 4, but I would be happy going from a current size 8, to a size 6 in jeans.

Edited to add:
When I checked with the body for life's calculators for BMR, it said for me to lose 1 pound a week to eat 1800 cals. Doesn't That seems like a lot??? Currently my cals are 1400-1600 and I dont lose a thing, even with exercise.

Jami,

You and I are pretty much the same height, but I weigh more than you do -- and I'm OLDER than you . I am currently in Size 4's for dress pants, Size 6 for most jeans.

If you haven't been losing on 1400-1600 cals, factoring in exercise, you're likely not eating enough cals and your body is in a stall mode. If you give it fuel, keep it "fed," but clean, it's gonna run better. (Think of a race car) Having a few days a week of higher cals will actually enhance your metabolism, esp if you ARE working out.

I have noticed that. I have seen a few women on here, who weigh more than me, and are the same height or shorter sometimes, but are a couple sizes smaller. That one stumps me... I'll deffinetly increase my calories then. I think that will naturally happen when I start increasing my daily carbs. I'm so excited to start this BFL!!! Tomorrow is start day! I'll have to get the Ol' camera out and take some before pics..
Thanks!

ABSOLUTELY, GIRL. Take those pics before you begin.

And as for smaller sizes?

It's all about the muscle.

Muscle is where it's at.

Mornin' everyone. Dragged my butt out of bed this morning for UB weights workout and feelin' much better for it. My glutes are still sore from the weekend (not sure if it's from the LB weights workout, jumping castle antics Saturday night or overstretching Sunday ). Managed more reps for my arms this morning, actually got 12 reps in my first set of bicep curls to shoulder press (was struggling doing 8 last Monday ). Did 8 reps for sets 2 & 3 as well. Slowed down the chest flys & presses a tad this morning, really felt every one of them and still managed 3 sets of 12 reps.

Jami, good luck with BFL and sorry about your grandfather . I'm 5'6" and weigh more than you and am wearing Australian size 10s (US 6) and some size 8s (I guess US 4s?) so I suppose I shouldn't complain about the scale weight . Would still like to be in the 140s and I'm still working towards that.

I want to add that one of my worst weeks on my program (the one I started in November 2009 and am in through March 2010) was the one where my calories were too low and my cardio was too high. I lost 2 pounds on the scale that week...but I didn't lose any body fat! I seem to have better results when I eat more, even though that seems backwards. But, you've got to have good nutrition to fuel your tough workouts, and you've got to give your body what it needs to recover. I can't wait to compare my before and after pics!

I'm excited...I'm going to attend (not participate...just watch!) my first fitness competition on March 20. I want to see what the women look like in the fitness and bikini competitions. I don't know if I want to compete or not, but I might want to do so. So, this will be my first chance to scope it out and see what I think.

Rachel, that fitness figure competition that you are talking about is something I have ALWAYS wanted to do, but, lacking knowledge I could never get myself to that point. I would always "get stuck" and all impovement would come to a screeching halt! I have been in contests, and competitions before, but never on that level.
I think you should do it! That is, Participate! That would be so cool!!

It would be pretty cool. I'm 43, a single mom, and an introverted bookworm type, lol. I'm not lean enough yet, but part of me really likes the idea of competing on stage....at some point in the future. I know my consultant trains women to compete. Right now, it's an exciting idea but I need to learn more.

At 5'5, 140-ish, 25% body fat, I am in size 7 jeans from Aeropostale. They are loose enough that I can just pull them off. I would like to be in a size 3 or 5. Probably will be in a size 5 when I hit my first goal (20%)

Sizes have changed quite a bit over the years!
But, at Aeropostale, the junior size jeans are based on these measurements:

7/8: waist 27.5, hips 38
5/6: waist 26.5, hips 37
3/4: waist 25.5, hips 36

Remember, there is a difference in junior's sizes and women's sizes, too.

Jami, 17.5% body fat is awesome! You must look pretty lean already, especially with your measurements. Maybe check the sizing charts for the brands you like and see where you line up on those charts?

Bear in mind too, Jami, that frame size can make a HUGE difference in the size that you wear. If you have a large frame, you can be at your correct weight, BF%, etc., and still wear a larger size than another person who weighs about the same.

Don't get too hung up on size. Be proud of of what you've accomplished. And don't be afraid to reassess your goals. After all, we're trying to be healthier, whether that's at a size 10 or a size 2, right?

dont get hung up on the scale OR Those body fat testers.. they really dont mean anything. Dexa is accurate, those not.. My coach doesnt even go by bf EVER.. its meaning less other than to see it go down.

Yesterday I started adding back in.... Oatmeal. 1st meal I had 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1 cup egg beaters, 2nd meal, the same, so total of 1 cup oatmeal yesterday and a pc of fried chicken last night and I am up 3.4 pounds this morning, I know water weight.... from one cup of oatmeal and a pc of fried chicken?? Seriously?? I have no idea how to transition myself off Atkins without gaining all this water weight. Will my body eventually get used to it, and I'll stop retaining fluid over time, or am I going to gain a lot of weight plus some like many people who come off Atkins diet. Do you think I'll get the same BFL results while sticking to Atkins or by getting on the BFL nutritional plan? How to I transition without gaining!

oh, I normally wear Big Star, or Miss Me brand jeans, in a 29... Express pants size 8.

weights and PROTEIN

Hi guys..
I am small (5'3" woman, 110 lbs) and eat lc for reasons of health (its SAVED my life, to be short and sweet about it)..I am an aerobics instructor, runner and personal trainer. I lift heavy weights and often.

My concern is I ate almost TWICE my weight in protein grams, daily...I have always eaten way too much (but not quite this much) so it's not a result of lc'ing. NOTHING bad has ever happened and in fact,w hen I try to scale back, I get ravenous, shaky, starving.

Does anyone else here eat that MUCH protein? LIke 150-180 g per day!!!??/ My kidneys are fine and I drink a boatload of water..do you see this becoming a problem? I do it cuz I need lots of calories but carbs and me don't get along. So, I'll sit down and plow some protein. Love it and it loves Me, but this, I am aware, is A LOT...I have no personal concerns iwth it, other than that. No negative consequences, but are they coming?
I'm very athletic, very muscular, very strong. And very happy
Thanks for your input!

Hi all,
I like the low carb portion of my carb cycling. I finally saw a brand new number on the scale today 137.8. Today is my third low carb day and then I have a high carb day tomorrow. I bet I'm going to have a great workout on Tuesday night!

Jami, I wish I could give you some great advice! Just stick with it. I always tell myself as long as I am truly following my eating plan and workout plan, my numbers will go down over time.

I plugged all my foods in from yesterday and my total counts were
96 carbs (total carbs)
1950 calories.

Rachel, what are your carb levels when you cycle? Do you notice a gain the next day? How long does it take for that water weight to leave? What does your menu look like on your typical higher carb day? Thanks
sorry for all the questions.

I don't eat that much protein per day, but I am upping mine. Just finished one of Lyle McDonald's books and he recommends 1.5-2 grams of protein per pound of LBM for someone who is very active and works out a lot. If you feel good, are at a happy weight and can perform your job, then I can't imagine what the concern would be. The idea that too much protein harms your kidneys is a myth unless you have a specific kidney disease.

If you're curious, drop your protein a bit and up you healthy fats and see how it works for you. Good luck!!

Rachel, what are your carb levels when you cycle? Do you notice a gain the next day? How long does it take for that water weight to leave? What does your menu look like on your typical higher carb day? Thanks
sorry for all the questions.
How in the world does 2 cups of egg beaters, a cup of oatmeal and one piece of fried chicken add up to 1950 calories???

Hi Jami,

I haven't had my high carb day yet (as part of this carb cycling.) My trainer just started me in carb cycling. However, I have been eating carbs the whole time I've been on his program.

My first high carb day is tomorrow. My carbs will come from grapefruit (2), an orange (1), Lara bar, whole grain tortillas (one at breakfast, one at lunch), whole grain crackers, brown rice, and yogurt. It will be a low fat day. It's a lot of carbs...my notebook is in my car, or I'd tell you exactly how many. I am intensely curious as to what will happen with my body...like, how will my Tuesday workout be? What will my Wednesday weight be? How quickly will I drop the carb water weight?

I do three low carb days on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and then another high carb day next Saturday.

I meet with my trainer on Thursday, so he will be able to make any needed adjustments.

I will let you know how it goes!

Rachel
