I'm always interested in learning about other women's training/nutrition programs who have the hip/thigh battles that I have.

One thing that seemed to work for me last year in really making a noticeable difference in their shape/leanness was running. Unfortunately, with an injured knee ligament, I can't do that right now.

There are those who say: Don't run, it will eat up all your muscle. But again, it depends on the body type. There are no set-in-stone training and/or nutrition rules that apply to everyone.

It's all a matter of finding what works best for our specific body types.
I love running especially doing running/speed walking combinations (HIIT). It is a serious workout.

12x20 dumbbell curls failed at last rep then switched really fast to..

8x10
No resting in between. I read an article about his workout and I had to try it.

Apple - Pear discussion

I refer to myself as an hourglass b/c I have a wide back but I will say a "pear" for this discussion.

My measurements are:
38inch chest/back
27inch waist
40inch hips.

A pear is someone who has around 10 inches difference b/w their waist and hips.

My measurements are 35-29-36.5. I would love to loose another 3-4" on my waist!
Oh, and my widest point is actually my abdomen, which is closer to 32.5". I think that's where the apple shape comes into play for me.

Here are the definitions:

[edit] Female shapes

The Source, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, 1856Independent of fat percentage, weight or width, female body shapes are categorised into one of four elementary geometric shapes,[1] though there are very wide ranges of actual sizes within each shape:

Apple (triangle downward)
Apple shaped women have broader shoulders and bust, and narrower hips.[1] Apple shaped women have (much) higher androgen levels compared to women with other body types[citation needed]. Because of this high androgen level, the skeleton develops in a masculine pattern. Fat is mainly distributed in the chest, face and abdomen. This is the body type found mainly among female athletes, particularly swimmers, archers and those participating in other sports activities where emphasis is on the arm and pectoral muscles.
Banana or straight (rectangular)
The waist measurement is less than 9 inches smaller than the hips or bust measurement.[1] The body has a relatively high androgen level compared to the estrogen level[citation needed], and this causes the skeleton to develop in a more masculine pattern and body fat to be distributed predominantly in the abdomen, buttocks, chest and face.
Pear or spoon or bell (triangle upward)
The hip measurement is greater than the bust measurement.[1] The distribution of fat varies, with fat tending to deposit first in the buttocks, hips and thighs. As body fat percentage increases, an increasing proportion of body fat is distributed around the waist and upper abdomen.
Hourglass shape (triangles opposing, facing in)
The hip and bust are almost of equal size with a narrow waist.[1] Body fat distribution tends to be around both the upper body and lower body. This body type enlarges the arms, chest, hips and rear before other parts, including waist and upper abdomen.
A study of over 6,000 women carried out by researchers at the North Carolina State University around 2005 found that 46% were banana (rectangular), just over 20% pear, just under 14% apple, and 8% hourglass.[1] Another study has found "that the average woman's waistline had expanded by six inches since the 1950s" and that today women are taller and have bigger busts and hips than those of the 1950s.[1]

Im a banana but with my training im likely an apple lol....

I dont believe in spot reducing.

I wish i had that androgen level they talk about .... just shy of 48, my hormones are near gone!

Too much running and my poor quads shrink.. major hard to grow them to begin with..especially with my biomechanical challenges or some muscles stubborn to fire.

I gain wt first in the boobs, face and abs/kidney.

Measurements for me this last biweekly
36 (bust)
28.5 waist at belly buttonish)
33 hips

Even though I'm shaped like an hourglass, I'm definitely a pear, gaining in my hips, butt, and thighs first.

I my workout today! It was kind of like circuit training, but done with pairs of exercises. It was the first time I'd done anything like this, and I really enjoyed it. I loved it so much that I wish I could do this workout every time I trained!

I had a yummy post workout snack - a protein shake and a toasted cinnamon- raisin english muffin. Man, I'm loving working with Erik!

Wow! Tasty....my pwo shake is cookies/cream protein powder, half a banana, ice, water, and sf syrup (I forgot what flavor I put in.)

I have had almost half a gallon of water already and it is 1:15pm. I didn't realize I had so much already.

I might have a super pretzel on Wednesday, if I can stay away from the english muffins. I about died when I saw that one of Erik's PWO snacks was a protein shake and 5 ice cream sandwiches!

Your shake sounds yummy! I mixing up fruit in my shakes, but for now, I'm going to enjoy the carby stuff I don't get to have otherwise.

WTG on your water intake! It's 4:24 here, and I just finished my first half gallon. I've got a ways to go, but we stay up kind of late, so I'll be drinking until I go to bed, around 1:00 or so.

No kidding - it must be nice.

I want to do the same, Ileen. I was thinking how good a sourdough english muffin would be for a PWO snack with a little bit of homemade LC strawberry jam!

Ooooh. pizza's a great idea, Ileen! Could you use a tiny bit of reduced fat cheese, or would that be a no-no? Maybe a pinch of parm?

Hi Twyla! Hope everything's going well for you and your mom.

Jami, where the hell are you, girl? You're normally posting like a banshee this early in the morning! Hope everything's okay with you.

Yesterday was the best day! Seriously the best Monday I've had in a l-o-n-g time. I nailed my food 100%, had the most awesome workout I've ever had (did I mention how much I yesterday's workout? I'd marry it if I could! ), got a bunch of things done around the house, and bought tickets to see Chevelle on May 5th!

Well, I've been working with Erik for a week now, and feel great. I feel better, because I'm eating better, and as a result (I believe), sleeping better too. I haven't had any insomnia issues at all since Erik uped my calories. I've only dropped a pound and a half so far, but I weighed the day after lifting (I always retain some water), so the scale isn't going to tell me anything useful. Why I even bothered weighing is beyond me. But even though I'm eating carbs and using sea salt - and am still retaining a good 8 lbs of water - I don't "feel" bloated. My tummy (where I always retain water like crazy) is totally flat and bloat-free. I don't get it, but I'll sure take it!

I cooked a whole chicken in the crock pot yesterday for Dave and Jordan's dinner, and they said it came out great. If how it smelled was any indication, it had to be good! They ate everything but the breasts - those they saved for me for my off-day lunches. How sweet!

Siggie - that's the spirit! There's nothing better to make one feel better than to look at how far they've progressed.

Lacey - Hi! to our little lifting thread.

Jami - You ate them in bed? I don't know why, but that's just hilarious to me!

Okay, I need to get off this computer and get to the store - I'm in dire need of sweet potatoes!
