Jami, if you decide to go with Callanetics for improving your flexibility and augmenting your strength training program, the most current, up-to-date version of Callanetics DVD's is Callanetics Evolution. I began with "Ten Years Younger in Ten Hours," and although it nails the concepts and works wonderfully, it's rather outdated (recorded in the 80s). Callanetics Evo goes into greater detail on the concepts and is very thorough. Great investment.

I try to make sure I get in at least two sessions of Callanetics per week to help promote flexibility. Be prepared to, uh, "sweat" along with it, though.

Thanks Twyla! I need some flexability. I can't stand stretching before I work out, so I know this will be a challenge for me

It's been said that dynamic stretching is best before a weight training workout, as opposed to static stretching. I often do light cardio with a few stretches on training days for my warmups.

Callanetics is more static stretching. But it also strengthens considerably while promoting flexibility.

Either way, stretching is a critical component of training.

Made it back to the gym the last 2 days, after surviving the "snowpocalypse"....felt great to get back to my routine...didn't use today as a rest day because ANOTHER snow storm is suppose to hit tomorrow, so I went back to back days just in case. Happy Valentines Day!

Greetings all!

Hey Guys!

I've been weight training consistently for a little over a year now, hitting the gym first-thing in the morning 4-5 days a week.

I started at around 170lbs, and approx 21% bodyfat. I'm currently at 165lbs with 10% bodyfat. I'm really happy with the size of my bis, tris and pecs, but it's long been my goal to uncover my abs. I haven't been able to get there over the last year with a decent, but not carb limited diet.

I started Atkins last week to trim off the fat over my abs, and I'm already seeing a difference. I'm down almost six pounds in the last week, and I feel great! I've never really been overweight, but I think that the low-carb lifestyle would benefit everyone for a healthy life.

I read a bunch of information on the new studies that show how Carbohydrates are the cause of so much sickness and obesity in the US, so I decided to cut them from my diet. Everything I've read shows that the average human will be more healthy with the high-fat, low carb approach.....so I'm in it to win it!

I lift heavy 3 days out of the week, and do the Men's Health Spartacus Workout on the other two days.

Supplements:

Pre-workout: Muscle Pharm Assault
During workout: used to use Waxy-Maize....now subbed with WATER :-)
After workout: Dymatize Elite 12 hr Protein
Fat Burner: USPLabs Oxyelite Pro
Creatine: Sci Fit Nutrition Kre-Alkalyn 1500

Nice to meet everyone!

Spartan! Sounds like you know what you're doing. I'm a novice weightlifter and will take all the good advice I can get!

Today's workout - Venuto's workout A
traditional warm-up - arm circles, twists, lunges, standing oblique crunch, push-ups (girly)

30 Squats @ 30 lbs
40 Birddogs
20 Deadlifts @ 62 lbs
20 Rows @ 30 lbs
Bench press - 7 @ 62 lbs - 20 @ 30 lbs
20 planks @ 10 counts each
10 tricep extentions @ 30 lbs

The weather here is BRUTAL today and I just did not want to workout, but I did!

Hey Spartan (and anyone else) I just started taking a stack supplement called Wipeout Crave Control that I got from Netrition. Any thoughts? It's a non-ephedra stack. Ingredients can be found here: Champion Nutrition WipeOut

Would love input from someone who's used this kind of supplement before. Thanks!

no weights for me since my 1/2 hearted attempt on Saturday morning. Did a Yoga DVD Sunday morning and latin dance class (2hr) Monday night. Got up for a HIIT + steady state cardio + yoga/streching workout this morning (~1hr) and have bellydance class tonight (1hr). Planning UB weights workout for the morning providing I have an early night - my schedule is hectic to say the least ATM and I'm tired this afternoon.

Hi all,

Been getting up and doing a little bit of yoga each morning. I have my heavy weight workout plus cardio tonight. This is my third low carb day. I see my consultant in the morning, so I will see how I did on this cycle of carb cycling. My lowest weight this week has been 138.5 (today)...I would like to see the 137's again. Maybe tomorrow!

Thanks for the welcome Mayberryfan!

I looked at the ingredients on the WipeOut fat burner that you're using. It all looks pretty standard, but the doses that are actually shown aren't really in the kind of concentration that you would need for the product to do much good.

Generally speaking, the Caffeine content is mostly what gives you a thermogenic effect that you can feel.....but it looks like a lot of the other ingredients are mostly filler. One or two of the ingredients provide Thyroid support, which is good.......but I had to laugh when I saw that one group of the ingredients was called "ECA Stack". It truly is a far cry from the real Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin Stack of yesteryear....but I can see what they're trying to accomplish.

Honestly though, the Atkins/low-carb diet is so effective that unless you're down to losing your last pound, and are trying to get truly ripped......I would probably just let the diet do it's thing and lay off the burners for now. The last edition of the Atkins book said that caffeine can actually stall your diet by causing an insulin spike just like the carbs do......so something to think about. :-)

Spartan - welcome aboard.

Things have been a little quiet on here since Jami started her Body for Life thread and I have been busy at work, but we'll keep it going.

Your bodyfat-to-weightloss ratio is very impressive. Great job on that.

Hi everyone! BFL has been great so far. I have been getting my carbs up to the 60-70 ranges and then a high day of about 120ish ranges, and I feel excellent! SO much better, since I started eating this way, I have noticed that I am more cut, leaner, thinner.... This is great! I think I have found my niche! I haven't lost any more pounds, but for now my main objective is to maintain my LBM and lose fat.
I think BFL has a wonderful program for diet and exercise, pretty similar to BFFM, except not as much cardio. Speaking of which, the cardio is awesome! I dont have to kill myself on the treadmill for 45 minute runs anymore.
Thanks everyone for steering me in the right direction with my changes of eating, carb cycling information and so on.

I have been telling everyone that I have been doing the BFL challenge, I figure this will hep me stay focused and not quit, therefore I wont look like a quitter! LOL NO ONE has heard of body for life! Weird. I remembered this from back in the 90's when I was a young teenager. Then, the ones that do know about it scoff and say this, "yeah, you think your going to win?? What are the odds of that happening, seriously, I think your wasting your time and heading from disappointment." umm, gee guys, thanks for the support. LOL NOW this gives me even more determination. I am submitting the registration packet and everything when I'm done. I feel like I have as good as a chance than anyone else, dont I? Well, When I am getting in the best shape of my life, and possibly making a career out of it AND completely transforming my body inside and out, they are still going to be sitting there, eating their cookies in their bloated, uncomfortable bodies, only wishing that they had the motivation to start getting healthy...... Maybe down the line some of them will get inspired...

Maybe that's what I need to get re-motivated at the moment?

My life is really busy and I'm tired so really difficult to find the energy for my workouts. Didn't drag my butt outta bed this morning, had an extra hrs sleep instead. Have time tonight to do a workout after dinner so I should do that. Mostly a matter of not turning the darn TV on I think.

DD & I are baking LC Brownies this afternoon for her to take to a sleep-over on Friday night. Need to go to the wholefoods grocer to buy some ingredients (like coconut flour) first. By the time we're done it'll be about time to start on dinner so should be able to avoid DD turning on the TV (fingers crossed) which helps in the long run. Also have uniform ironing (hers & mine) to do tonight so plenty to keep me occupied.

Go for it, Jaime! And there were women from this board who placed in the BFL challenge the year I did it (way back when, the best group!) And one of them went on to be a fitness model. You never know who is going to go for it heart and soul. I have people saying to me, well, what are you going to do when your sessions with your trainer are over?! And I say, this is what I love and I am going to keep working on my body (and mind) and I may do over 40 comps. I will not limit myself, although others certainly want to hold me back!

sparatan welcome!

carbs are not that 'evil' and do serve a purpose. There is definitely a difference betwween eating processed crap and oat, swt potato and br rice.

I eat moderate carb and have hit goal and then some.

I have read some articles about fasting, and most of them say do not work out. I wouldn't if I were you. I cant remember where I read them, but, DH fasted for 3 days a year ago, and he didn't workout during that time.

Out of my three hour meeting and grabbing a quick bite for lunch. I am down just a bit this week...a pound on the scale, which puts me in the 23's...at 23.8% body fat.

Next step is to up my cardio...way up!...and decrease my calories to 1400 on most days, 1600 on workout days. We are done with the carb cycling...he didn't think I got good enough results to keep doing it.

I have 7.5 pounds of fat to lose to meet my goal...in four weeks. It's going to be tough, but we're going to go for it. The good news is that I have gained 6 pounds of muscle, which is more than we originally anticipated.

I have to run...off to yet another meeting!

Rachel. I like your new avitar pic! You are so cute!!
How does your trainer measure your body fat? That IS a lot of fat to lose in 6 weeks! But , you can do it! I need to call the university here in town and see if they can do a Dexa scan on me, I want to see how comparable it is to the one that I get at the gym.
I'd love to lose about 4% more BF. Right now, according to the one at the gym, my BF is 17.5%... your calories look like my calories! I usually have about 1400-1600 a day.
