Discouraging back pain

I have to admit I am discouraged right now, but I am not going to give up. I am having a flare-up of sciatica and it is scaring me. I have been walk/running on the treadmill and that seemed to irritate my back so I did two days of walking on progressively larger inclines ala BFL. I also cut the grass for the first time of the season. This seems to have caused a painful bout of sciatica pain.

Now my back is in bad shape. I was up a lot last night with a heating pad doing stretches and just trying to find a position I could fall asleep in without being in pain. This does not do much for one's exercise program.

I have been taking advil to try and get the inflammation to go down and hopefully this will pass. I think I need to do more focusing stretching and stop running at least for now.

Anyone else have problems with sciatica or back pain? I could use some encouragement. I am going to stick to good eating and not let this sidetrack me.

I just found this article yesterday - -more for my son ... who's growing like a weed, has crooked hips and of course sciatica pain ...

BetterU News - Issue #27 - Daily Specialization, Lower Back Pain, One-Arm

Take it easy on the walk/running for a bit ... ICE/cold packs will actually help ease the painful swelling also. We go to a chiropractor and this helped out wonderfully for our DS...

Keep to your diet plan, do your stretching faithfully and ease into walking ... as exercise and keeping things moving will help things along.

I've dealt with back issues for about 3 years now. Just recouperating from surgery done on April 16th. I have NO MORE SCIATIC PAIN!!! For the first time in over 3 years!!! I am ecstaticly happy. Have to get through the incision pain and all, but I have high hopes for my future for the first time in years.
Prior to surgery though, I had been going to a gym sponsored by our hospital and run by licensed Physical Therapists. One thing I was told was do NOT use incline on the treadmill. Walking is great, but do it on level ground. And no running.
Hang in there, I hope things improve for you soon!

Thank you both for your replies. That is really helpful to know that walking on an incline is a no-no for sciatica. I am sure that is what aggravated it. I am glad you are feeling better, BarbDe!

Marci, did you or your son order that product that the link is advertising? I am not ready to dump any money into this just yet, but was curious if you had tried it? It sounds logical, and since I am also having a pain in my neck on the same side, I suspect it is an aligment/balance issue.

OK, so I am really adverse to stopping all exercise. I think I will do as you suggest. Stretching, easy walking to start with. I will keep with the advil for at least a week to see if it gets better. Thanks for the support!

I had back surgery, for my siacta nerve.
Before the surgery it almost took my legs out from all the pain in them, but now no pain at all...
My surgery was the best thing I could had done.

I went for years with back pain thinking it was nothing but over the years it got worse as I aged and it really got bad.
After I had a MRI on it I was sent to a spinal surgeon and he did surgery right away because he said it was that bad not to wait any longer to have it fixed.
So you might want to check with your doctor to see how bad the problem is. Don't go years with it hurting like I did.

Active Release Techniques® is awesome. Might look into that.. but no matter get clearance to do any exercise and never do anything that causes pain.
