Muscle soreness question
I'm thinking I've known/read the answer to my question somewhere before, but I just CANNOT remember:
Is it necessary, while wanting to get the most benefit from your weight lifting workouts, to have muscle soreness the evening or the next day following each W/L workout? In other words, if you happen NOT to feel sore the next day, does that mean you haven't fatigued the muscles sufficiently for optimum results? Thanks for all tips. |

My understanding is that if you don't feel muscle soreness, you have concluded your workout in such a way that you don't have the excess lactic acid in your muscles to cause soreness. At the end of a workout, if you are using the muscle groups that were targeted during the workout, yet to a lesser degree, this allows the release of the lactic acid from that muscle group.
IE: cardio running, then walking for what ever time is necessary to get heart rate back within normal range. The walking is what releases the toxins (lactic acid) which occurred in the targeted muscle groups during the cardio workout portion. This means that you can have a great and beneficial workout without muscle pain the next day. Does that make sense?? Been so long since my physiology class, but I think I remember that part correctly! |

Pegboard,
Maybe I should have signed up for a physiology class too! My brain is very challenged in that regard.I've read and re-read your post. I think I get it. Bottom line, most importantly, you're telling me I'm still good without muscle soreness. That's what I wanted to hear. Thank you. ![]() |

Muscle soreness is not important for estimating how good your workout was. Your progression in lifting is. Are you adding more wt to the bar, growin more muscle mass etc.
Sometime a change/new program will give you sorenss but doesnt mean you didnt train hard enough if you dont have soreness. The body after xx amt of time on a program adapts to a stimulation, that is why it is important to keep your program changing every 4-6wks. |

I gotta add, I'm one of those weirdos who gets a sadistic sense of enjoyment/satisfaction from muscle soreness. I like feeling that kind of pain as a reminder of my hard work. What is UP with THAT! Seriously, Ileen, I get your point. Progression: Most important. Check. |

Ah yes, bottom line is that YES, you can have a great, beneficial and successful workout without resulting in muscle soreness that often accompanies working out.
I'm like you, I like a bit of soreness - not a lot, just enough to remind me of the hard work I did the day or two before. Now if I could just get off this couch!!!!! |

I'm a hedonist, I hate being uncomfortable AT ALL. That said, I did eighty benchpress type push ups with 5lb weights in each hand yesterday and today I feel like and ogre has grabbed me by my collar bone shaken me like a dusty rug.
I used to be able to do 72 real pushups in 2 min. So is this soreness just because I'm restarting after years of inactivity or did I do something wrong. |

Thanks Ileen, I checked the other post. I appreciate the links and the itinerary. I guess I got over zealous. I've been to EXRX before for other reasons, I will check it out more thoroughly.

I hardly ever get sore the next day from working out anymore since I have been doing it regularly for the past 8 months. I still feel it when I'm doing it though for sure!
