Just wanted to hop in for a second. I was taking the L-glutamine and then stopped rather abruptly (just forgot for a couple of days). Just a couple of days after skipping the the L-glut I woke up at 3 am with such horrible gas pains that I drove myself to the hospital. I went to 3 different doctors in 4 days trying to find someone to help me. It eventually got better but I also experienced the worse constipation of my life.

Anyway, I'm now taking medication for Irritible bowel syndrome and I'm wondering if the L-glut was to blame instead. This thread made me wonder. I just got the diet cure book and was hoping to start supps soon but now I'm too nervous.

Leenie, any more news on your "experiment". Thanks as usual for the great info everyone.

I've been too nervous to go back to the L glut after what happened. I've taken the other supps since without any problems, so I conclude that the L glut caused the severe constipation. I can deal with the cravings a whole lot better than I can deal with that problem.

I'm so bad with supps. When I get busy at work I forget to take them so I am very inconsistent. I'll be taking the ones I have until they run out, but won't reorder.

I did a little more research on L-glut and the only thing I can find is that stopping them too abrubtly can cause problems. I didn't get any specifics though. It seems that with most amino acids you have to go off of them gradually. And since L-glut seems to have a lot of effect on the intenstines and bowels I bet I just shocked my system by going off of them too fast.

Leenie, you said you're bad with supps. I if you missed a few doses in a row that would do it too. I'm not good with pills at all so I may have to stay away from amino acids altogether. I may give it another shot next month. Maybe a supplement challenge...

Hey Gang!!!

I thought I'd take time for a pill-popping update! Ah, yes, Deb's awesome weekend plans...Friday night with the supplement thread & Saturday night with Trading Spaces! Eat your hearts out!

Chantel, you know that one last bottle of aspartame-sweetened flavored water I had? I returned it to the store! Yes, I did! How's that for making a great decision? I'm working more diligently at being free of the stuff. I keep packets of stevia in my purse in case I need something sweet in a drink (tea or decaf) while I'm out.

You wondered about L-carnitine? I took it for a while, high quality liquid form, but didn't notice any benefits. I still have some in the fridge but it's probably gone bad by now. Yes, it was recommended for vegans since we get it in meat. Why take more? It's supposed to increase metabolism. All it did is decrease my bank balance.

Tracy, you really want to know ALL of what I'm taking??? What you take and when you take it depends on what all your symtoms are.

Deb's Supplement Schedule

AMMeal 1Mid-MorningMeal 3
  • Chromium
  • Magnesium
  • Pantothenic Acid
  • Potassium
Mid-Afternoon
  • L-Glutamine
  • DLPA
  • L-Tyrosine
  • GABA
  • St. John's Wort
Meal 5Bedtime (or a little before)
  • L-Glutamine
  • GABA
  • Calcium
  • St. John's Wort
  • Calms Forte
  • Potassium
Two of my supps aren't on the Diet Cure list. One is potassium. I take that to replenish electrolytes beause I drink lots of water & get bad leg/feet cramps after doing ardio, espeially spinning. I don't always take this much; it depends on the amount of cardio & water I have planned for the day.

The other non-Diet Cure supplement is Your Vitamins Healthy Hair Skin & Nails. I consider this one of my most important supplements--this brand only--and will give up just about ANY other supplement first. It is the ONLY thing that has EVER gotten my nails to stop splitting, breaking, etc. and finally grow & I've been trying everything my entire life! I've always had good hair but I have so much new hair growth that stylists always comment on it!

Besides the HHS&N, I consider DPLA & L-tyrosine to be my most important & effective supplements. I have been struggling to get all of them in (it's hard to keep track, but I've got a new plan), but I make a point not to miss these. I'm also good about getting my GABA.

EDIT: Ooops, almost forgot! You'll notice that 5-HTP is missing from my list. I usually sleep well but all of a sy=udden I was finding myself still wide awake hours after going to bed. On more thna one occasion I got up for a couple hours and went back to bed around 4 AM! I picked up the book The Mood Cure and noticed that this can be caused by 6-HTP. I eleiminated it and voila! I'm sleeping gret again! I plan to try adding it bac in to see it there are any benefits and if I was just taking too much. I have never noticed any beneifts at all, though, so will most likely find this to be true again, in which case, I'll stop taking it altogether. I think I may be one of those rare people who sees no benefits from this supplement.

Eat clean, lift heavy & pop pills!

Deb,
thanks for the update!

I am still going strong on my supplements and I love it. I feel so much better.

I am so proud of you for giving up the flavored water! Great progress.

I am still caffiene free and have cut way back on aspertime. I drink maybe 1 or 2 Diet Caffiene free grapefruit sodas but its all water and decaf.

Glad you checked in.

This is interesting. I looked at the quiz questions that Leenie posted from the book and I scored super high for 1, 2, and 3. Hmm. I might grab this book from the library and see what supps it recommends. Right now I only take Mega Women Multi and a Calcium Citrate supp.

Thanks for posting this!

Interesting thread, Leenie. What caused you to bump it at this time?

Of all the people experimenting with supplementation early in 2004, I wonder how many are still pursuing the same supplementation routines?

I identified most strongly with 4 and 8 on the quizes, but I just had a thyroid test and the THS came back 2.7, which is supposed to be normal.

(An old roommate of mine said she had a lot of those symptoms as she headed into peri-menopause, so that's another possibility. Mostly it's the broken body thermometer thing that drives me nuts -- my hands and feet are cold all the time, and my perception of hot and cold fluctuate wildly. I seem to be having cold flashes instead of hot flashes.)

I take a multi-vitamin, milk thistle, flax oil caps and siberian ginseng. I did try L-glutamine years ago and didn't notice any big difference, but I was making a lot of other changes in my life at the time, so I may have missed more subtle ones.

I think I'll check to see if my library has this book. I'm always curious about non-invasive interventions in health problems.

Hey all. Interesting stuff regarding Amino supplementation... I believe they ARE very important.

Just wanted to mention that I visited a holistic MD last year and he put me on Biosuperfood (algae supplements - there is a website). He said that they are the building blocks for ALL the other nutrients our body needs (vit, min, fatty acids, aminos, etc.) since they are WHOLE food supplements - micro food at the bottom of the food chain. Nothing is processed or extracted, so nothing is MISSING, and it's balanced so you don't have to worry about too much of a good thing. The website explains the origins (Russia) and how it was used for Chernobyl victims. Very impressive. My doc said he put his entire family on this and took them off of EVERYTHING else - and this is his area of expertise. I was convinced.

But more impressive for me is that I noticed a difference in mood, energy (HUGE diff in energy, ASMOF), PMS symptoms, allergies after only taking them a week or so. I still take the Formula 3 - 3 times a day. It costs $50 a month, and it's ONE supplement.

I highly recommend this since it just makes so much sense when you think about it - no guessing. And it's worked for me. The ONLY thing that did not improve for me was the slight ringing I have in my ears - but it rarely bothers me. I also recently had lab work done and everything was pretty much perfect.

He said that generally the more health problems a person has the greater improvement they would have (I don't have any major issues).

Anyway, I just wanted to mention since it's expensive and inconvenient to have to take SO many different supplements and many times people don't notice a difference.

I think this was in reference to not taking Mag at night. I think alot of mag supps have added B vitamins, and they could keep you wired and make it hard to sleep, but without extra stims, magnesium would cause you to be drowsy. I take it specifically for nights I Need to rest for.

With the Glutamine, that AA is actually recommended for tissue repair, specifically the gut lining. It is in a lot of IBS formulas that I've sold. I think someone mentioned before though that suddenly stopping the dose of glutamine can cause withdrawal problems, but it should most definately be helping your gut, from mouth to bottom, heal and correct itself. I hope you had not any other problems with it.

I'm looking forward to reading this book, it gives me an excuse to go to the library again. I scored high on 1,2,3,4 and 7
