Jeff's Weight Loss Journey

Good Afternoon All.

I'm new this forum. I plan to keep a journal / blog of my journey with Medi Weight Loss Clinic. I'm a 28 year old male, have tried every diet out there, with success and without. After a rock bottom and very close to having a gastric bypass, I went into Medi Weight Loss Clinic in Paramus, NJ.

Here I met Dr. Ira Bernstein who put me on 800 calories of protein, Phentermine 1x daily and all the supplements and injections that go with. I followed his instruction and diet the best I could and managed to lose a a tremendous 18.6 lbs the first week, a Paramus, NJ store record!

Please come back weekly to see how I'm doing, ask questions and join in the fun.

Start Date - 6/21/2011
Start Weight - 370lbs

Week 1 - 6/28/2011
Weight - 351.4
Week Loss - 18.6 lbs
Total Loss - 18.6 lbs

Wow! That's amazing for your first week! Nice job!!!

Welcome to the boards!!! I don't post a whole lot (I regularly lurk) but everyone here is super friendly, helpful, and encouraging. You'll really like it.

Signed up to a new gym. Did 20 minutes of weight training and 30 minutes of cardio.

I'm also thinking about throwing out my bathroom scale. I have a bad habit of getting on that thing multiple times a day. I'm upset because I haven't lost any weight in 2 days. If I keep doing this to myself I'll sabotage my progess. When I get home today, the scale is going in the closet.

Additionally. I'm in mid week 2, have not cheated once, drinking all my water and have been in Ketosis the whole time. At 750 calories a day there is no way I will not lose weight. Even if I'm not in ketosis, the calorie level alone is sufficient to drop weight. I'm 6'2 350 lbs. I have to lose weight. Keeping the faither and pressing on.

I've noticed that chicken bullion helps a lot when I'm hungry. It's not the low sodium, but with my water intake and normal blood pressure, the Dr. says that's fine.

I've also started buying big sour dill pickles with lunch. 6 oz's of turkey breast and a large pickle have been filling me up pretty well.

Hangin' in there.

Jeff, I will agree about throwing the scale away. I did that and it made going to the clinic to be weighed so rewarding. Like you I also had the bad habit of weighing myself multiple times a day and that truly will sabotage your diet. I tried taking it in the garage and even that didn't help so I actually THREW it away. I recently bought a new scale when I had lost 50 pounds. So, get rid of that scale and you'll have less stress and the journey will be much more pleasant.

Hey Jeff,

Do not give up or give in - you can do this! It got much better for me after week 2. I was actually a little depressed to begin with and then by week 3 I felt much better and proud of my progress.

You are doing awesome! I thought that week two was the worst - emotionally. I had to feel my feelings instead of eating them down.

Hang in there!

Thought I'd chime in for an update. Firstly, thank you all for your encouraging words and motivation. There truly is strength in numbers.

I've been at the gym every day this week. I've been lifting weights per the Dr's orders and throwing in a 30 minute elliptical at the end. My friends and family are already starting to notice a difference and it hasn't even been 2 weeks.

I go for my second weigh in this Tuesday morning and I feel really confident. I've been a bit light headed and fatigued this week but I'm pressing on. Chicken Bullion is saving my life.

Powerade Zero and Water all day long to remain hydrated and a few cups of coffee are helping me through the day as well.

I'm currently on 30mg of Phentermine but I think I'm starting to build up a tolerance already. We'll see what happens.

Everyone enjoy your holiday and stick to the program!

Thanks Amayrial. I'm definately keeping it up. Went to the gym last night and did 30 minutes of Chest and Back. I then went to do 30 minutes of Elliptial, but felt so good I added an extra 22 minutes. Needless to say I feel fatigued today, but it's good to know I'm on the right track.

Week 4 Weigh In - Down .5 lbs for a total of 31.5. Got some strange readings from the Tanita Scale. Apparently I lost 11 lbs of fat this week but gained 14 lbs of water. The Dr. said he'd never seen anything like that before.

I exercised a lot this week including hiking, biking, boxing etc. I put in a great deal of effort. My eating was spot on, however, I think I ate a bit too much sodium this week. Dr. said to cut out the sodium and see what happens.

Start Date - 6/21/2011
Start Weight - 370lbs

Week 1 - 6/28/2011
Weight - 351.4
Week Loss - 18.6 lbs

Week 2- 7/5/2011

Week 3 - 7/12/2011
Weight - 339
Week Loss - 3.4

Week 4 - 7/19/2011
Weight - 338.5
Week Loss - .5
Total Loss - 31.5 lbs

Jeff, You are doing great!!! Congrats!
You just encouraged me to hit the gym. I keep making excuses. But I have hit a little plateau this week and I think I need to jumpstart it.
Thanks for sharing your journey. You helped me.

Currently feeling extremely depressed and alone. I'm very sad, don't like my life and feel I'll never find love or happiness. I'm not really looking for any advice, just simply venting on a forum where I don't know anyone and can't just let it all out. I know to look on the bright side of things etc....

I'm not giving up on my weight loss, just simply feeling like **** at the moment and I think it's important to journal it.

I just cut up some Romaine lettuce and celery. Tossed it in some olive oil, pear infused vinegar. Added some fresh cracked black pepper, parsley and basil. Early this morning, about 9, I put in a standing pork roast. Cooked it at 235 for 3 hours. I enjoyed every bite. Normally, I would have eaten the whole thing, but since I've been low carb for 7 weeks now, I was satisfied with my 5 oz's. I'm excited that I get to have it again for dinner with my mother who is also LC.

This diet and way of lifestyle is wonderful. I no longer crave. I haven't binged in 7 weeks. I've been exercising every day following a program. I feel confident, energetic and happy.

The last time I tried to lose weight I was spending $1500 bucks a month at the gym on personal training. $500 on a packaged meal program and groceries. It took me a year to lose 100 lbs and it cost me a lot of money. The problem is, I never learned how to eat right. If all the meals are prepackaged, how am I supposed to learn anything? It's not even the nutritional aspect, but the self discipline. I didn't have to try hard, it was easy, so I failed when I gave it up. With Medi, I've been challenged to eat the right portions and make the proper food choices in the real world. I've learned to pick the croutons out of salads and resist the bread on the table. I've learned to LOVE salads and add the right kinds of toppings.

Another aspect of this program that I enjoy is cooking. I've always loved cooking. The food network is pretty much the only channel I watch. I have a close personal relationship with my butcher, who incidentally is a LC eater and has lost a ton of weight. Visiting the butcher at least twice a week and spending money on quality meats with all the cash I save from not binge eating. I used to spend over $100 - $200 bucks a weak just on junk food. I have a good job and I'm single, so I had the extra money to fill my body with crap. Now, with the cost of Medi, which for me has been $105 a week. I get both shots every time and the standard follow up is 85 at my location, I spend the money on quality meats and veggies.

So, back to the cooking. With cutting out all the sugary foods, you're left to your own devices to make the meats and veggies interesting. Now, the great thing about the natural foods, herbs and spices, is the vast variety of flavors. I thought it would be hard to keep chicken interesting, but I was wrong. Various cooking methods and endless spices and herbs makes every meal different, fun and exciting. And no only is it good to eat, but it's therapeutic and fun to cook it and finding new ways of cooking it.

I've never liked fish. I grew up knowing this and if someone brought up seafood I'd turn my head in disgust. Well, that's all changed. I was determined to like seafood. I mean, it looked good on tv and everyone who talked about it raved. So I started with Tilapia. Simple, light, flavorless, but it wasn't gross! So then I tried Salmon. Ok, this was strange at first. It tasted fishy, salty and like the ocean. Not my idea of a good time. But then I tried it at an expensive restaurant on my Grandfathers birthday. I figured, hey, I'm not paying for it, might as well try the best quality! Well, fresh, well-cooked (as in, by a good chef, not done-ness) is delicious. I couldn't get enough. From then on I was at the local fish market buying a different kind of fish every day. Halibut, Salmon, Cod, Flounder, Swordfish, Tuna, Striped Bass, just to name a few.

I could keep going on, but I think this is enough for now. Have a great day all!

GOOD JOB I think THIS time around it's "clicked" for you, and you'll be VERY successful! I know for me in the past I had the idea, that all I had to do was lose the weight, THEN I could go back to eating what/how much I wanted.......I KNOW....how stupid is that?? somehow I thought I'd still be able to keep it off.....DUH!

Now, I know that I'm NOT a binge eater, but that I eat too fast, so end up eating WAAAAAY too much. I'm still working on getting down a few more pounds but have learned that I LOVE many foods I never thought I'd eat.

One thing I've learned is how great fresh fruits and veggies taste. I ADORE salads now (too much sometimes). When I get hungry now, I'm actually hungry, so the food I eat is special. I find cooking to be pretty quick and easy for the most part.

Salmon has always been one of my favorite foods, but for many years I didn't like cooking ANY fish at home. IF you like to grill, you might want to try cooking salmon (or any fish fillet WITH the skin on) like this: I like to use the non stick foil, or spray non stick spray on regular foil. Start with the salmon skin side down. Season the top any way you want......I like garlic powder, salt, pepper, and dried dill. Grill for just about 3-4 minutes (depending on how thick the fillet is) THEN flip the fillet, and with a knife or fork PEEL the skin off, and discard it. This SHOULD come off easily, and all in one piece IF you cooked it long enough. Season this side too, and cook for another few minutes........THEN you could be done IF the fish "flakes" at that point, but MY family likes the skin side to "crunch" a little, so I flip it back to the skin side (minus the skin of course) just until it "browns" a little......YUMMO

Post some of what you're eating over on the energy in and energy out thread, or any "recipes" that fit Medi on the medi recipe threads! We're all looking for good ideas! KUTGW

I've been somewhat exhausted lately. I'm on Week 2 day 4 of Lee Labrada's 12 week lean body challenge. I've notice my weight steadily dropping due to the change in program, but I think I've just hit a wall. I can't get enough sleep. I went to bed at 10 last night so that I could get up early for the gym but I just had no energy. I've even been eating a bit extra calories. With the increased lifting I've been ravenous. Haven't had any carbs, but I hate twice the amount of protein I should have yesterday.

It'll get better. Think I just need the weekend to sleep it off and get some rest.

I started my LSAT course this week and have high hopes of improving my diagnostic score. I got a 151 on the cold test and with a bit of determination and studying, I think I could bring that up to a 160. Just what the world needs, another jewish lawyer.

Actually, had an amazing non-scale victory directly related to the LSAT course. So Monday, 8/8/11 I took the practice exam. When I got to the classroom I noticed that the desks were attached to the chairs and couldn't be moved. I still think that I'm 370 lbs, so I knew I wasn't going to fit in that desk. Well, I sat down and fit! Not 100% comfortable, but enough to take my test and not embarass myself by asking for a chair and desk. When people ask me why I hate being fat, sometimes you can't explain all the reasons why, like fitting in a desk to take a test.

Lastly, I was told by the nutritionist at the clinic this morning that a woman was unsure about the program and if it would work. She must have googled Medi Weight Loss Clinic and Ira Bernstein (who is the DR at my Paramus, NJ clinic) and THIS JOURNAL came up. Well, after reading it she apparently decided to sign up.

If you're out there reading this, I'm very happy for you and it will work if you follow the program!

Wait until you fly, no seatbelt extender or sucking it in just so you can fasten the belt!! And being able to sit comfortably in your seat without that side look from your seat mate who is afraid your size will encroach into 'their space'.

That is really crazy that you mention this ... I know only too well how FANTASTIC that had to feel.

My daughter plays softball in high school, and last year there was a parent meeting in one of the classrooms. Of course, I hadn't been in a desk-attached-to-the-chair desk since college almost 20 years ago, and when I couldn't fit comfortably into that desk I didn't know how I kept from crying. I think about that day a lot, and again just this morning when I officially started my little journey. Can't wait until I can get past that.

I can relate to how you felt. I waited 2 hours to go on Batman rollercoaster only to have the shoulder things not lock into place. I had to get off the ride and wait for my friends to go. I was humiliated.
