Hello~ I was confused because the clinic says eat 500 calories but if you exercise then eat more and the bottom number should not go below 500. I am eatting around 700-750 and I exercise to bring it to 500 but...when I read the postings many people eat only 500 and still exercise I wonder am I eatting to much?

I am also confused by the vegatables I am allowed 20 carbs a day I go by what Medi says and use 5 carbs for veggies. Some say count these carbs seperate. What do you do?

Personally, I think it's ok to eat a bit extra if you're exercising. 500 is what the clinic says to eat, but that's specifically for protein and generally for people not exercising. I think 700 - 750 of protein is not too much, in fact, I think you'll see better results with the increased protein.

As for the carbs, no, do not count veggies separate. You 20 - 25g of carbs a day should actually only be coming from veggies. Think to yourself, if it's not meat or veggies, I probably shouldn't be eating it. That being said, you still need your source of fat so that your gal bladder doesn't freak out. I recommend 100 calorie packs of almonds and/or peanut/almond butter with celery.

Ultimately, you want to be below the amount of calories it takes to maintain your weight. If you are eating 500 - 750 or protein, 100 of fat, and 20g of carbs, which comes out to roughly (let's see, 4 x 20 is 80... yes that was easy but.... well.... i'm bad at math), then you're grand total is between 680 and 930 calories. Ketosis or not, that amount of calories is going to yield a reduction in body weight.

What I've learned being on this diet for 13 weeks is that, you don't have to be perfect. That's right, you can mess up and still lose weight. If you hold yourself to such perfection and high standards, you're going to freak out and say F it, and quit. I'm a big guy, so my doc tells me 800 of protein. Well, I got news for you... some days i eat 1000. Some days I eat 1200. I log every single thing I eat in my notebook and count for it. I log all my exercise and count for that. Yes, I strive to hit 800, but i'm not perfect. I'm not going to get fat eating an extra 2 - 3 oz's of chicken!

Before you beat yourself up for cheating a bit and eating that extra 100 - 200 calories, just think about what you were eating before! I know that in that past, when I wasn't logging and counting everything, I was easily consuming 3000 - 5000 calories a day. I would eat chinese take out, pizza, fast food, etc... And i wasn't beating myself up over an extra burger vs not having one. So stop being so hard on yourself for small imperfections. Eating 800 - 1200 calories a day is going to make you lose weight.

And one more thing, with that being said, don't beat yourself up if your in ketosis or not in ketosis. I mean, Ketosis is great and all, but the reduction in calories alone is going to make you lose fat. If you're in Ketosis it's just proof that you're burning fat, but if you fall out or can't get in it, don't worry about it, it's not the be all end all.

Well, I just logged on to write 1 or 2 sentences, but I can't stop once I get going.

Hope you are all having a great time and keep on going. Progress not perfection, one day at a time and all that jazz. And start exercising if you're not. You'll begin to love it. I reccommend a gym for the commraderie. And I'm not running a spell check, I'm too damn tired and the rent is too damn high!

Hello!

Wow! great information...I agree. Eating a little extra protein won't hurt your weight loss efforts. When I first started medi I was losing very fast. It was great and I was motivated. As I said before I gave up after my mom passed away in July, and for almost 3 months I went back to old habits. BAD IDEA. It didn't help the pain of my loss and made me feel like crap.

SO, I'm back and happy to say that my first official weigh-in I'm down 5.4

Thanks Jeff, your words motivate me.

I started working out and my losing slowed down to almost a stop, even though I was replacing the calories I'd burned. At my appointment last week she told me to increase my protein calories to 700, and though my weigh-in is later today, I know I've had a much better week.

Some days you are just naturally going to be more hungry than others ... on those days she told me it was fine to go up to 700 even if I hadn't worked out that day. I think the more uncomfortable you are, the more likely you are to make a bad choice.

WOW!
Thank you so much great information. I actually tried to eat only 500 calories the other day and felt terrible. I actually am more comfortable in the 700-750 range. I also checked with the Doctor she basically said what you said if you are exercising eat more protein. She strongly said dont go below 500.

Funny yesterday I ate 800 calories and almost freaked out..but I was hungry. Then I had to think about it we are talking about 800 calories. I will say my fat percent is really going done nicely.

Funny you mention the 100 calorie almonds I love them. I bought some pistachos the other day but...too tempting. What about the protein bars or atkins bars? Do you eat them at all? I love your posts you have a lot of knowlegde and I greatly appriciate your advice

I will keep following your sucess and will keep you updated on mine. It feels wonderful to exercise right now I am walking, dancing and doing WII fit also Yoga. Will add more later.

Week 14 Weigh In

Week 14 Weigh In - Down 3 lbs

Week 14 - 9/27/2011
Weight - 313.5
Week Loss - 3.0
Total Loss - 56.5

Another week down another 3lbs gone from my body. Of the 56lbs I've lost 46 has been from fat. The other 10 is a combination of water and lean mass lost. Consider the amount of weight, a 10lb loss in not fat is pretty good.

Still going strong and ready for another great week.

Week 15

Week 15 Weigh In - Down 1 lb

Week 15 - 10/4/2011
Weight - 312.5
Week Loss - 1
Total Loss - 57.5

So all last week I really cheated on my diet. I did not have any carbs, but I had a lot of calories. I took my LSAT on Saturday, plus it was Rosh Hashannah and I had family over. I ate a lot of Brisket. Went out with friends and ate prime rib, steak, pork chops... just lots of meat. I was super stressed out over the test and even got a terrible knot in my lower back.

Long story short, I still lost a lb this week and got back to the gym with a vengeance. Found a workout buddy from the office and we've been to the gym the past few days. Staying strong and keeping on track. I was already down a few lbs this morning, but I only go by my Tuesday official weight from the clinic.

Hope everyone out there is doing well!

WOW Jeff, just happened across your journal, really admire how you lay it all out there and how hard it is to battle this problem, you are so smart though to do it now, I wish I could have gotten my act together in my 20's and not my 40's!!!!! You are doing a fabulous job!!!

I am battling like a bugger to get under 200 pounds, OMG its been 30 years, and no matter how much exercise the diet, low carb, low fat, you name it, I am stalled and frustrated with my body like its shutting down on me! I would eat a dog turd if it promised me I would get under 200 pounds, LOL Very frustrating!

I will keep checking on ya and wishing you continued success!!!!

Amber
