I have started TRYING to add jogging into my daily walk.....I've increased it a tiny bit each day. I had a really great day last week THEN it's like my body is protesting by causing me to have spasms behind my knee, so I haven't even been able to go walk since then My GOAL is to be able to jog 1/2 mile.....not bad for an old broad who has NEVER, EVER jogged/ran before in my entire life!

I was COLD all the time too, AND my skin is dry, itchy, and looks bad, so I have gone back to adding 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to my morning coffee. I used to do that, and alwasy had nice skin, but of course stopped when I started Medi. I also use plain coconut oil as a light lotion on my body! No more dryness, and my skin is looking awesome! PLUS I seem to be tolerating the temperature better as well! I'm NOT encouraging anyone to just start adding coconut oil to their diet, but I used to be on the LCF site years ago and read about it there. The benefits seemed to make sense to me.

NEW revelation........NOT! I do MUCH better drinking all of my water when I keep track of it! DUH! Mini goal for today: drink ALL of my water, avoid pork rinds!
Oh.. I ordered a bit of this and a bit of that..... hehehe. I tried to look through here and see what had good "reviews" and go from there.

Off of the top of my head I ordered several Walden farms things..

-Alfredo sauce
-BBQ sauce
-grape jelly
-whipped peanut butter spread

As you can tell from the last two items, I had a PB&J craving (i apprently have not outgrown them, lol), so I started looking for "Breadlike" things to make a sandwhich and ended up ordering the Carb Counters Easy "No Knead" bread mix (per serving: 76 calories and 3 net carbs according to the website). and from that I saw cinnamin swirl bread also from carb counters as well. I don't know if this will be any good, but I will let you all know either way when I know :-)

I am hoping these things are good (or at least tolerable) and will help me add some variety to my diet. After having the lack luster Turkey burger for lunch yesterday I was a little depressed about what I was eating I think. Nothing like a little retail therapy to perk you up (even if it is shopping for food and not shoes).

My softball game ended up being rained out last night, so I went to the gym at my apartment complex instead. I was going to try intervals again but when I started running the first interval, the yoga-ish capri workout pants/shorts (whatever they are..) started falling down. Not just falling to below where I like to wear them.... falling to wear someone behind me was going to get a very interesting/scary show very soon if i didn't stop. SO i decided it was in everyone's best interest if I just walked fast. I normally walk at 3mph and run at 5mph (Im slow) so to split it I walked at 4mph for 3.25 miles. Tonight after my Medi appointment I am going to Old Navy to get some new workout pants/shorts/capri things.

On a side note, I like the yoga-capris (i suppose that is really what they are) because they are long enough so I don't feel exposed, short enough so that I don't overheat, tight enough so that my thighs don't rub and chaffe and loose enough so I don't look like stuffed sausage. I hope they still have them at Old Navy, because they have been perfect for everything from working out to playing softball to cleaning house :-)

Coconut oil... hmm.. my skin does get dry and itchy, especially this time of year. Maybe I will do some research and give it a shot...
I have read the threads about hair falling out and am terrified of that happening so I am considering some sort of preventive measure (maybe a supplement?)

Hope you are all okay with all the snow storms out there! My boyfriend is stranded in phoenix trying to get to Charlotte for work travel (he was at the BCS game last night :-) )

Hi Keri! Congratulations on your goal, maintenance, the treadmill jogging, and all those calories allowed per the calorie check....I'd be nervous too about eating that much daily! (Though off plan i probably do eat that much). I thumbed through several books today at Walmart (and they don't care)...the New Atkins diet book looked to have some great tips in it re: eat these kinds of carbs, not those....and I think had a whole chapter about maintenance. I didn't buy it.

Determined Gemini and Cindy - thinking of you. cindy what a blessing your grandma sounds like she was in your life. What a treasure! Determined Gemini...hope you too are feeling better soon. For both of you

Down 3.2 pounds this week for a total of 30.4!!! woo hoo!

I also talked to the clinic about going in every other week. We talked about making sure to set a goal for the 2 weeks, so that I don't lose momentum. I am looking forward to saving a few $$, but if I start to slip I am going back to week to week.

Had to come share my personal best from this morning.....I went on the treadmill (since it looks Ike it may be a long time before I walk outside again....we're at 18" already and it will be snowing until tonight). I was able to jog for 23 min, which was 2 full miles! I so want to do a 5k in the spring, I really need to find one that is local. I do know that treadmill jogging and outside jogging will be 2 different things, but it's a long way from where I started!

Pot roast cooking in the crockpot, the girls and I will make homemade granola bars from the maintenance recipe thread today.....hmmm.....what else to do while stuck indoors????

KNIT!!

I learned to knit over the holidays. It keeps my hands busy so I can't snack. I am currently knitting a scarf. It looks terrible, but I like to think it has character.

Cindy - Wow! I went to your photos....you are 1/2 the person you used to be! I know, as an RN, I have to be careful of letting the lbs creep on due to fewer breaks (so not drinking all my water), wearing elastic or tie scrub pants (instead of tightly fitting jeans), and now with the cold not getting out to exercise after my shifts. We can get to goal again. It's on!!

Keri - LOVE that new avatar and the beautiful, confident smile! You look fabulous! And, congratulations on your treadmill accomplishments. I'm getting inspired by you. I think I'll plan to jump on the treadmill or bike at least 10 mins about 3 times a day so I can warm up when I'm here at home (it's 10 degrees outside! BRRR!) That way it gets my exercise in, warms me up, boosts my metabolism, and puts the equipment to use instead of it collecting dust! Ha! I too plan to do 5Ks in the spring. I'll be your buddy on that, if you like. It really motivated me to have a 5K goal and I did it in the slow but steadily progressing jog/walk fashion that you were doing. When I reached a goal (like your 2 miles), that then became my new baseline. Just don't overdo or you'll hate it. But, keep it up and add on slowly!! Since I haven't jogged in over 1 1/2 months I'll have to start slowly again myself!

WOW you're all doing GREAT! I love seeing the pictures, and how you've all changed. Guess it's time for me to dig through some, and get them posted. I have to wait until my Sister in law returns so she can give me a new "do"......sorely in need of a cut a color

I feel bad about whining about how COLD I am, but Charlie knows what I'm talking about! I had to go out, and cover all of my orchids this afternoon, since we're supposed to have wind chills in the 20s tonight Then I had to come in and warm up with a cut of hot tea!

I dropped at least 1 pound of that water I'd been holding onto ......I'm feeling much better today...more in control. I didn't have as much trouble getting my water in today (or writing it down). My second day of not snacking on peanut butter, or pork rinds. I didn't notice as much stomach growling either, so maybe doing this without AS won't REALLY kill me!

Welcome Dionne! Just hope you'd clarify/correct your statistics. We usually post first our MWL start weight/then our current weight/lastly our goal weight. I think you have the last two switched around =) There's a lot to read, but I hope you first check out the week one thread. You can get started on it by clicking: Welcome Newbies! Helpful info for week 1.

Deb - I would love to be your 5k buddy, guess I need to get on finding one! Maybe a spring date to look forward to will make this nasty, cold, snowy winter go faster!

Mary - I do chuckle when I hear you FL folks complain about being cold....my parents "winter" in Naples and as I was looking out my window at 18" of snow First thing this morning( another 6" fell thru the day!) my mom was telling me how chilly it was when she went for a walk, she had to wear long sleeves with her shorts!! I had nothing to say to her at that!!

Cindy - I just checked out your pictures.....wow! You don't look anything like your old self, good for you!

Speaking of being cold - I am freezing all the time!! My husband keeps telling me I need more insulation (uh, no thanks!) but seriously, I freeze! I am so bundled up in the house and constantly turning the heat up. I'll take being hot any day!

Deb....thanks and trust me all that weight is NOT coming back

For now, I still have back issues BUT I'm not gaining any more!!!!!

My chiropractor, who watched me lose that weight, is very frustrated for me

I'm not exactly sure which activity caused this injury BUT, trust me I won't do it again

I'm taking this one day at a time....at least I can still do cardio I'm also still doing my stretching which helps somewhat

Keep on losing and maintaining all!!!!

Cindy -It goes with our nursing profession. I see my chiropractor anywhere from once every 6 wks to once every 2 wks! He tells me, "you nurses, you go from bending over starting IVs, to computer charting, to lifting 300 lb people up and out of bed....but do you do any warming up or stretching before you lift, NO!" I've been an RN for 30 years and I teach every student nurse and new, young nurse I see to protect their backs, raise the level of the bed up, get more help, etc.

Keri - You got it!!! I knew way back in April when I started walk/jog intervals that my goal was to jog the entire 5K the end of September for the Race for the Cure. Even by the middle of September I was jogging 2 1/2 miles but hadn't tried to jog 3.1 miles (which is 5K)....but the goal, the endurance, the crowd, the DAY came, and I did it!! I'm not in to racing...just running =) Then on Oct 10th did another 5K event in the city and even improved my "time" some. So, if I find something around here as a 5 K in March or April that should be doable....hopefully it will be above 55 degrees again by then! We'll keep each other accountable! (BTW, thanks!)

Also, regarding "losing your insulation," that's what I had started writing about back in November when it was getting colder around here!! I then dutifully put on about 8 lbs during the next few wks, followed by another 8 lbs over Christmas. Yikes! (But I felt a tad warmer.) This week I've lost 4.4 lbs on my way to getting close to goal again. I may have gained 16, but it felt like 40 in my head and my body ached like it was back up to 190 again. NOT worth the insulation. The high today was 10 degrees....so now at home I wear double socks, long sleeves with a jacket, and I really try to avoid the basement unless I have the space heater on me! The thermostat is at 70 to 72 during the day. Maybe I should have someone check my window insulation and fireplace flue? Brrr!

Even my DH is cold....of course he's lost close to 90 pounds....so has lost a lot of his insulation too. We were talking about it yesterday, and noticing how many people we see that are like we USED to be, sweating with any exertion! I'd rather be cold and have to dress in layers. I do think keeping my body hydrated both inside with fluids, and out with lotion helps as well as adding a bit more fat to my diet with a teaspoon of coconut oil in my morning coffee.......of course that might be all in my head but hey.....if it works.....

Mary - Once upon a time on this forum I was using coconut oil in my coffee. Do you use any sweetener too? Isn't it weird how versatile coconut oil is? Such a good value, and I remember it kept my skin from being flakey from cold weather too....thanks for the reminder. I'll try it again tomorrow!

Mary, I understand your suffering, don't worry :-) I am going to get everything ready for bed and then take a hot bath to warm up. The I will jump into my pjs and jump into bed, minimizing my exposure to the cold air. :-)

Even the dog is cold. I have a small (18ish lb) ****-a-poo (haha, she is a cocker spaniel and poodle mix, but it looks like they sensored the cocker part of the breed name...)and I get her groomed regularly because her hair gets long and she has sensetive skin that seems to be worse when her hair is too long. She shivers when it is cold out so I had to put a sweater on her. My bedroom for some reason gets ALOT colder than anywhere else my apartment, so she actually sleeps under the covers curled up with me. Yes...I spoon with my dog. Its a symbiotic relationship, we keep each other warm.

On another note, I have uploaded a before and a progress pic to the album in my profile. I am going to try to keep adding them monthly.

snowed in, eating up

I am so glad this day is over. Snowed in today there was nothing I didn't want to eat. This was the hardest day for me so far and I went way over my regular daily calorie intake. I did stick with all protein for the extra calories, but feel like I blew my week. My appointment got cancelled due to the weather and it doesn't look like I will be able to go tomorrow either. Trying to take a deep breath and regroup. Start fresh tomorrow. Sigh..

you bet I do! I use Equal, or Truvia, or Davinci Syrup or all three!!! No, usually it's just one at a time. BUT I use coffeemate too! It's really the only time I indulge in "sweet". I've just discovered Chai Tea.....I had a woman make one for me "the way it's supposed to be made" with a sweetener, and milk (she used my almond milk for me)....it's wonderful!

I have never used lotions much but really like using them (or coconut oil) on my skin now. I make my own soap, so since the glycerine has not been removed like in commercial soap, it has kept my skin really nice. I think I just needed a LITTLE for oil in my diet, and the coconut oil did it! BTW I use cocnut oil (along with others) in my soap too....great stuff

Mary - I don't know why i hadn't thought of the DaVinci syrup in my tea....I use it in my coffee in the AM , and I haven't tried milk in it either. Some more ideas! I love trying new things! I like the flavor that I use so well (Celestial Chai Tea Vanilla honey flavored) that I think it's sweet enough sometimes even without my sweetner. I'm weird and use the bag twice too, I get all I can out of it!

Charlie - NOW I know who you are in Mary's mentioning of you in her post. I didn't think that was her husband's name or anything. ha! Also, I love your new avatar, been meaning to say that but wasn't sure who was who til I just looked at your album you mentioned. Wasn't your first avatar with you playing tennis? I can tell your slimmer! Horray!! Love your smile too!

Deb - LOL! yeah, the name can cause some confusion at times. I get emails all the time at work addressed to "Mr." Yes, the first avatar was a tennis picture - it just happened to be the only picture I had available on the computer I was on at the time. I am not sure when that was taken or anything, so I decided a more recent pic was appropriate. Thank you for the picture comments :-) I am going to try to post pic monthly. This weekend will be 2 months on Medi so I am going to try to take one then. I love being able to actually see improvements :-)

On the dry skin - Mine has been itchy since it started getting cold. I read somewhere to take a bath with baby oil in the water. I took a bath last night to warm up before I went to bed and I decided to try the oil thing. It was great. It felt like my skin just soaked it right up and I went to bed all soft and warm. :-)

Of course... I was woken up by a chirping smoke detector at 3:30 am. I think it is possessed... It sounds at the slightest amount of smoke (it happens at least 3 times/week now that I cook alot more). And when it sounds the only way I have found to shut it up is to take it off of the wall and pull the battery out. I don't know what it is with these (I have lived in this apartment only since Oct), in previous places the silence button would work or I could just fan it for a minute and it would stop. These are just over achievers I suppose. But I have no idea why it started chirping at about 1 minute intervals this morning. So I got out of bed and pulled it off the wall (which involved climbing on my dresser with no contacts in, fuzzy socks, and lots of sleep in me) and about ripped the little battery compartment out of it. I left it like that and went back to bed (after giving up and turning the heat on a little because now that I was out of bed I was freezing). I just crossed my fingers that the one night I slept with it not functioning wasn't the one night it needed to be functioning. It was only another 2 hours before I was supposed to get up for work, so i risked it. When I get home I will investigate the stupid thing.

I just re-read my post from last night...... my fingers must have been colder than I thought they were, or I was more tired, or BOTH....Please excuse the misspelled/wrong words

Charlie, I'd replace the battery even if you KNOW it's a brand new one! We had the same problem, and a friend (who is a firefighter) suggested this when I complained that ours was "too sensitive". That worked! We've suggested that to others too, so it must be more common than one would think!

I have a dog (60 pound German Shorthair Pointer) who wants to be covered on these cold nights too! She doesn't get on the bed, but has her own pillow to lay on and her own blanket (actually it's a beach towel with CATS all over it!!!)

My Mom fought dry skin forever, and her Oncologist told her to stop using an antibacterial soap ALL over her body (only to "certain" areas) and to use a superfatted soap like BASIS......wish I knew about home made soap back then, and to apply ANY kind of cheap oil (he said NO lotion until after the oil has absorbed) to her still damp body after a shower. She used baby oil most of the time. Now my DD is fighting with her super dry skin too.......hope she will take my advice....but my guess is she will roll her eyes and opt instead for some high priced product, and still not be happy with it!

Deb you're too funny.......I always use my tea bag twice too! We're NOT weird! I have to remind everyone NOT to think they're picking up after me, and throw it out! I'll try the Celestial Seasoning Chai next time I buy one. I bought some of the Celestial Seasonings Nutcracker Sweet (Suite) while in Jacksonville and it really doesn't NEED any more sweetener (all though that doesn't always keep me from adding one!) It was part of the holiday line of teas.....I didn't care for the other two I tried, so left them with DD. I couldn't find the Sugar Cookie one.....that I really wanted to try!

Hello all, just catching up on everything - it's been a busy day on the site today! Hope everyone is doing well! I'm down to 10lbs from goal!!! I think I'm going to lower it a little - I honestly didn't think I'd get to 150 so quick! I'm so happy and feel so good!

I started Oct 18 and will be at goal by Feb 1. Not too shabby I have to say! THANK YOU MEDI! Thank you all my message friends - you are the most inspiring part of the program for me!

Much Love!

I'm finally home from the hospital, had to go in, I was dehydrated and my sugar level was low. I'm just glad I'm pain and symptom free. The hospital had me eating toast, white rice and soft pretzel, ugh.
Jumped on the scale as soon as I got home. Looks like I've gained 5lbs! How could I've gained weight eating so little the past 5 days? But then again it was all carbs what they were feeding me. I confirmed my weigh in appointment for tomorrow morning, let's see what the clinic scale says

I'm so sad, borderline depress right now. Was so sick, missed my son's wrestling matches, miss the gym, missed my first mini weight goal and now it seems like I've gained weight! UGH :'(
I was also supposed to start training this week for the NYC Women More Half Marathon in April. Yes I know tomorrow is another day and a new fresh week to start anew, just wish I was in a farther ahead

Determined Gemini - While you were sick, your body protected you (it thought) from dying of complete dehydration by "third spacing" some fluid. Then when you ate simple carbs it POOF, like a sponge your absorbed and IV fluids puffed out your tissues! Key: keep drinking lots of fluids (water) and that will fill your veins so your body will release the fluids from your tissues. About missing out on so much....yes it was a pain, but you really don't want to overdo when you have a virus. My daughter got mono. People get endocarditis. Those are not easy to recover from, and sometimes extremely debilitating!
There's always next time...
