Girl, this just breaks my heart for you. I've not had to deal with this kind of devastation (thank God), but I can imagine your pain, confusion, disbelief, and shock. I TOTALLY understand about not eating, but you have to take care of yourself. I know it's hard. A serious break up caused me to lose like 30 pounds in a month - even my own saliva in my mouth made me gag. PLEASE try to eat and eat well. You'll need your strength to deal with everything you're going thru. AND you for dang sure don't want to let any issues with this man destroy all the progress you've made regarding your weight. Put yourself first. And continue on this journey while you're figuring the rest out. Don't give up on you.

Ortal, So is that over...are you able to forgive and trust him....is he blaming you? Do not accept that blame if he does. Do not accept the thoughts that would make you feel you are unworthy. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Crying is helpful, the problem is when we don't express our emotions, internalize stuff, and try to nuture or hurt ourselves because of the uncomfortable feelings.

For the Beck Solution stuff I wrote up a couple of affirmations just last night and memorized them in my jog/walk today. One is "I will not give in to my emotions." "I am stronger and healthier when I control my carb intake. And I like how that makes me feel."

Be nice to yourself and take care of yourself. You're worth it...

Sorry to change the subject again, but I ran 4, 12 minute miles tonight. I am pumped! A year ago I could barely run 60 seconds at a time.

Congratulations Lins!! You have really, really built up your endurance! I've never previously been a runner, and for years until about 2 months ago would get breathless with walking...carrying around over 40 lbs extra weight and dealing with my mitral valve prolapse (leaky heart valve which made me short of air). I was telling Lea today (at lunch ) that this AM I did my alternating 2 min jog/1 min walks for 35 mins and at the end jogged for 5 mins straight! That's a new thing for me! It helps SO much to have the accountability on this website, thank you everybody, and we all inspire each other!

I started with the C25K program last year and ran my first 5K on July 4th 2009. I did the same run a few days ago and beat my time by 2 minutes. I am now using the 5K to 10k plan on the same website. And when I finish that I will move onto the half marathon training program. I plan to run a 1/2 marathon at Disney World in late Feb 2011 with some friends.

Cool! Lea and I are aiming to jog in late Sept in the 5K for the Race for the Cure. I don't see myself as a future marathoner! (My mom has had both knees replaced, my dad has had one replaced, and I partially tore my MCL last fall....but it's been fine!) You go girl!!

Week 1 - question about Carbs

Help.

Am I supposed to have ZERO Carbs during this first week? Or is there a small number I am given each day?

I've read various posts about it, but it's the one thing I am not quite understanding. I am on Day One TODAY, and am preparing my meals for the day before work just now. Can someone advise?

Thanks in advance...

Hey laurie!
its not zero carbs but its a very small amount. For week 1, i would follow the print out the clinic gave you and check out the week 1 thread here, its very helpful! Good luck to you!
-- on another note, i left work sick yesterday at like 4 and came home and crashed. I did have chicken noodle soup and a grilled cheese. i felt so sick, like i was getting the flu or something. But, this mornng i feel better! I hope it sticks and that the "sick" food wont mess up any losses for the week too badly.. Im going to attempt a protein "muffin" this mornng!
Have a good day my medi friends!

Ortal - This may not be my place to say anything, but I want to give my brief perspective. As a man, I would say that if he was willing to do this while dating you that you should seriously consider stepping away from this relationship. Not all men are like this, and I hope you can find a man who will be faithful to you.

I had my appointment today and we talked about the breathing test thing I'll be doing soon. I talked for a long time with the doctor who said she thinks I can hit my 145 goal and maintain it. She said she believes this is possible because of my commitment to exercise. I told her this really is a lifestyle change and I will never stop trying to take care of my body.

I have officially lost 55.8 lbs and am going for the last 9.2. She stressed how hard the last pounds are to lose. I guess there's no real hurry, but it sure feels like it!!

I feel like I've been away from this thread forever - my husband was home with us for the past 5 days which was a nice treat for our family. He's been working away from home Sun night - Fri for the past few months, so it was much needed family time! I even persuaded him to exercise with me 3 days in a row...we took the girls to a nearby bike path and let our oldest ride her bike alongside me while I "power-walked" and DH pushed our youngest. The downside was the extreme heat...ugh, but it made us definitely get in our water!!

Had my week 8 weigh-in today....down 5.8 lbs for a total loss of 39.4! I am so excited! Obviously my body listened to the upping of cardio that I did this past week! Yeah!

Question - had a talk with the Dr at my clinic today. (This was the 1st time I had seen this Dr...I usually don't go on Wednesdays). She was asking how much fruit/veggies I eat a week. I told her I very rarely eat fruit - as I noticed in my journal how weeks I ate fruit, I had smaller losses...and the fruit "triggers" a sweet tooth. She actually WANTS me to eat fruits...huh???? I don't think I'm ready for it, I still have a long ways to go to my goal. Then she asked if I have cravings or wantings to "cheat" - and said it was OK to cheat as long as I counter-act that with exercise. Again, huh??? Why? She also included alcohol in those "cheats". I really felt like she had no clue what she was talking about! Any one else ever hear these things?

Debbie - I think in a much earlier post you may have asked me about the flavors of medi-gummies I've done. So far I've done peach, strawberry, cherry & lime layers, but last night I made cranberry & strawberry in layers...by far my favorite!

Keri - Thanks for the Medi gummies info.....and I love your new avatar (your photo!) What a happy family you have!

Ortal - Thinking of you today. I can understand wanting to skip going, but you won't stop will you....think about that.

Jeffrey - How nice of you to give your perspective. And, your loses have been so consistent, you're almost at goal! Good job!

Ashley - Good to see you again!

Lea - Whoo Hoo!! I'm so glad to know you...and I know you'll keep me accountable for my exercise too!

Keri my clinic sounds a lot like yours in some areas. I rarely eat fruit though and my doctor was fine with that. But she also told me that if I ate planned non-Medi foods (she said to never call them cheats because they should always be planned), that it was perfectly normal and that she actually thinks that the people who induldge everyonce in awhile are far greater to not gain their weight back. But she also said that if you have to know yourself and if you can do that without going overboard then it's fine. She also suggested I drink a glass of wine every once in awhile, which I have. So you just have to do what you are comfortable with. I trust my doctor and I now trust myself, and I know if I never allowed myself a special treat (like once a month, and something tiny), then I wouldn't be able to keep doing this program for the rest of my life.

Lins - Thank you...I said nearly the same thing over a month ago after talking to my doctor at MWL clinic and she told me about planned "indulgences" so that one can be a part of whatever else is happening in situations but to do so no more than one planned meal a week. She said that research evidence showed that those who did this (once they totally know how to get back on their plan and quickly obey their plan) are more likely to be successful for the longterm. Also, she said that it sort of gives your metabolism a surprise so that it doesn't plateau, especially if you get right back on your WOE as outlined by the MWL program. Remember, this is rare, planned, and you get right back to the MWL WOE. I think our doctors went to the same seminar! I know she said she'd been at Mayo or somewhere and heard that.

Ok, so Debbie & Lins - if you have both also been told about "non-Medi" meals...how do you do when you have them? Do you notice any differences in weight lost that week? Were you always told this, or was it as you moved closer to your maintenance? I definitely think I've overcome the willpower portion of being able to get right back to the Medi WOE, I'm just not sure that with still such a long road ahead of me it's the time to start adding those non-Medi meals. My husband did ask if I was ever going to be "fun again out to eat"...split an appetizer, share a dessert, have drinks....and I told him that of course I would, I would just know how to balance it out with the rest of my life. If I was to think that all of those things were off limits forever - I'd never be able to do this. I just guess I have to figure out when I'm "ready" for that! I have 50-60 more pounds to lose...so maybe not yet! (However, with the day that I've had with my 2 little girls...a glass of wine after their bedtime sounds SO GOOD! But the treadmill will do instead!)

Just had to tell everyone this (and you may have heard this already): Went to my clinic today for weigh-in (yay! 16.2 lbs gone in 5 weeks!), and I was telling the nurse practitioner about this fantastic site. I said "I guess you can't endorse something like this." She said, "Actually, we were told in a Medi seminar about that site, and they suggested that we direct our clients to it!" How about that?

Ortal: I hope you are at least over the shock of what you recently found out. I hope you will ask your clinic what to do when you simply cannot choke down food (chicken broth?, protein shakes?). I really feel for you and have been thinking about you.

Congratulations to everyone on their successes, and thank you again for all of this wonderful support!

week one DONE! Had my weigh in and lost 5 lbs.

I walk 4 miles 3x a week...just found out that really doesn't burn that many cal. Biking or swimming seems to be good cal. burners. (according to the MEDI charts.)

Keep up the good work everybody!

Lins said - I ran 4, 12 minute miles tonight. I am pumped! A year ago I could barely run 60 seconds at a time.

WOW!!! You are amazing!! I really want to make this work for me, but I really can't seem to build my endurance. Maybe I could get your secret?

Debbie - I tore my MCL too! Just having lost so much weight has made it significantly better. I've already had surgery on that knee for a torn MCL about 5 years ago, so don't want to do that again.

Ortal - I hope you're doing okay today. AND whether or not you actually go (went) to the clinic today, just stick with the WOE. I get that money can be an issue so don't add to your stress. But hang in there!!

Everyone - the doctor at my clinic talks about indulgence (same clinic Debbie goes to) and she says plan on them. It's not normal to do without. She also said based on exercise we can maybe have that indulgence once every three months or even once a month. We just have to be aware and accountable. If you eat/drink something that feels like an indulgance, walk an extra 10 minutes to offset it.

Lins - (again) I know if I told myself I couldn't have an occasional treat, I wouldn't be able to do this for the rest of my life either!

Keri and all ~ I was told about the RARE "indulgences" only about 6 wks ago....so I'd already become extremely closer to my goal, I think I was in the overweight category at the lower end....not at the OBESE category! I do not want readers thinking they can indulge just yet! I was answering Lins, and she and I are getting very close to goal. Keep that in mind...you have to earn this indulgence allowance. Otherwise you'll be paying MWL weekly visits forever cuz you'll never get to goal, you'll never lose the weight, you'll make excuses, you'll NOT learn WHY you were overeating and got up the scale to begin with. Maybe that's it...BINGO (!)....as you can tell I've been there so candidly in my posts. I've been dealing with my feelings and I've been getting healthier. SO, all you who read this....it's not your time yet for the rare indulgences....work through YOUR Medi-walk. This past weekend proved to me that going out of town unprepared and not having a choice I did gain the weight (sister in law lives in the boonies, and she had just came back from out of town for 3 wks so here refrig was not stocked, my DH made last minute decision to go within 45 mins....so I didn't pack my food--argh! Thought about it 1 hour into the 4 hour road trip. Gained the weight eating food she'd pulled from her freezer and pantry. But by this AM I was 149 again, eating MWL way upon arrival home. I felt unsatisfied with the carb dinner Sat night....I had no feeling of fullness....it's crazy. I NEED protein to feel satisfied. I like how I feel when I'm in control of my food choices.)

i went today, down about 2 lbs but 4 lbs of fat. i ate a lot of salty crap (almonds, etc) not anticipating that i would actually go. i got a script for 2 weeks so next week im definitly saving the money... these will be my last 2 weeks on phen since im at a healthy weight.

im really appreciative of the support. it givves me comfort to read your kind words. im definitly going to continue this way of eating since losing weight makes me feel comfortable and good and if im gonna gain it back i KNOW itll be worse. i dont want to be single and fat... as bad as that sounds.

Ortal! I know it made you feel good to hear that good number today. Look how far you have come! And hey, if you're going to be single, be a HOT single and make him regret losing you! Keep this positive in your life--you need the feeling of accomplishment, and we all need you here!

Debbie, Lea, Lins--thanks for the straight talk about the indulgences. It's a nice dream for the future, although it makes me nervous to think of possibly losing control. Maybe it will have to be a slice of really good, dense bread for me or a glass of wine. I don't think I could ever have a sugary treat and then leave it alone.

Sunflower--did you have your pickles? Congrats on the 5-lb loss!
