Keri and Lins - My "small" children at home days are long gone, sadly, but I know how disappointing you must feel since you've found a way to actually DO something for yourself, everybody's into the routine, and you cannot go! Perspective... ...and don't let this make you want to eat emotionally. Use this extra home time as a resource time to learn something else...like going through the other threads or something....or the MWL site. I just looked there (hadn't looked in several months) and saw they have lots of exercises on there you can refer to. You can even do some youtube ones I think.

So, I was looking on the MWL site: In less than 7 months I've lost nearly 44 lbs, 8 inches off my weight, 10% of body fat total, and my BMI has gone from like 32.6 to 25.2.

Went for my second injection today and got to talk to the doc (she was on her way out the door the other day). We agreed my goal will be 135 to 140 and I'll try to have a BMI of 24.

She recommends I add strength training...which I have rarely done but now will do twice a week, to stimulate that last 10 lbs off and tone up. She says women's pelvis's aren't really made for running, but is ok with my goal for 5K. Also recommended I talk with my plastic surgeon about the mastectomy reconstruction/issues. Due to my belly surgery for the TRAM flap to due to reconstruction I don't have the abdominal support...you can google it if you want to know what that is, beware. I have been taking it slower weight loss wise due to the issues with the post surgery/body image stuff. I'm in a healthier frame of mind now fitness/counseling/support-wise to get to goal. I will not try for less than 135....I just want to be Fit2010!

Bought new jogging shoes today....I'll try them tomorrow.

Hope you all have a LOVELY day!!

I'll be hunkered here on the computer with grad school projects....

Thanks Debbie & Lins! I have to say - even though I was aggravated/annoyed/upset this morning...not once did I even think about eating something! Which for me is a HUGE change!

GMC Roadside Assistance ended up coming here a little while ago - gave my car a jump start, so at least we could leave if we wanted to...but seeing as how its naptime for the little one - not going anywhere now! Since the girls and I were up and dressed in our "workout" clothes so early - we ended up weeding the flowerbeds, walked (at the pace of a 2 yr old) up and down the street a few times, and then washed the car (which the irony of us washing the dead car did strike me!). And DH did call back and say that when he gets home tonight he's going to do bedtime all by himself so I can go out walking.

So - in the end - the day worked out fine! Might not have been how I planned it, but sometimes I need to just go with the flow a bit more!

Wow "week 1" eatting is kicking my butt again. I though since I was only eatting less than 20 carbs a day now that I wouldn't react the same way, but I sure am. Let me also add that I took a allergy pill today which I rarely do but needed it. So i don't know if it's the zero carbs or the allergy meds but I am feeling pretty weak this afternoon. Luckily we don't have much going on, but I have 4 birthday parties to go to this weekend.

Keri - How sweet of your husband to call back and make your walk a priority for him later. And, yep, sometimes we need to be like rubberbands...f-l-e-x-i-b-l-e, and I know I wasn't as flexible as I could have been when my kids were 5 & 7, I worked full-time, and DH unemployed for 7 months. But one thing I did do at that time was jog about 2 miles. That was prior to 12 hour shifts in nursing (almost 20 years ago, yikes!)

Lins - Drink water, drink water, drink water! And if you took a benadryl it would definitely make you weak. Hope you're not coming down with a sinus infection if you felt like you needed to take an allergy pill....that can make you really drained. And warning....if you have to take an antibiotic when you're anywhere near no or very low carbs it may make you super crave carbs......maybe not everybody, but it does me due to how many times I had to take them in the past and currently about 3 times a year for sinus infections....I have a tendency toward intestinal candida (you can learn WAY much more on this in the LCF yeast/candida thread.

I know I just have allergies, the grass is blooming right now (my hubby is a horticulturist). I have never had a sinus infection in my life and haven't been on antibiotics since I was a kid so I have no idea how I would react. But I am rarely sick. I have had a TON of water today.

I had my monthly wellness appointment this morning. I was down 2 pounds in weight from last month. I lost 3 pounds of fat & gained one pound of lean body mass. Water stayed about the same. I am so excited!!!

I just finished stage 1 of the New Rules of Lifting for Women, which is an amazing weight training program. I am getting leaner and can see definition in my shoulders & legs. I Medi!

Alright Suzanna! Looking good, feeling good, doing the plan! It's almost my turn. I'm working on the last 10 lbs then Medi will do the lab and breathing tests. i'm thinking I probably won't be "there" for about 6 wks....Just about the time my student schedule and stress will resume. Will be interesting to see that I react successfully due to all that I'll have learned this summer. You know, another benefit I'll have is that I'll still be incorporating my 3X wk jogs/walks then. I'm getting more hopeful as we go! I love the support on this site, friends!

Yay, Suzanna!! You are doing so great!

Lins--hope you are feeling better by now.

Keri--Good job working out your day. Hope you had a good walk tonight. For the future: there are 8 workout videos on the Medi website. Might be fun to do with the little ones, too.

Debbie--slow and steady wins the race. You are winning already! I love the support here, too.

Suzanna! I've been wondering where you were!

Tell me more about this book. I feel like thats the next level for me. I want to have less fat too! I looked it up but it looks overwhelming. Is it simple? I don't want to get all buff but I would definitely like more definition.

Keri, WOW!!! I'm so proud of you. Not once did you think of eating? That's a huge change for ANY of us!! I'm not quite to that point yet because when something stresses me out now, I make a point of saying, "thisAll is when I would normally eat my way thru the kitchen" but I still have to make the conscious decision not to eat and to do something else to either calm myself or distract myself. You are amazing!!!

Suzanna, is this a lifting program THROUGH Medi weightloss? or from these boards, or something you found elsewhere? I'd like to start lifting again.

thanks

Erin & Mary ~ It is not a program through Medi. It is a book that I read about first on the Muscle Matters board on this website.

The program uses multi-joint exercises to get a quick workout. The workouts in the first stage of the program take 30 minutes or less. It that stage (which I just finished), there are 5 exercises per workout. Instead of doing small isolation lifts, like a bicep curl, the exercises use multiple muscle groups, like a seated row that works your back and your biceps simultaneously.

Here is the thread that introduced me to the program... The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess

Lins ~ Have a great time at the parties! No luck needed, just remember what your goals are and stay focused on enjoying your time with friends and family.

Debbie ~ You are getting so close to the wellness phase! Keep up the great work!!!

Suzanna - I read the thread you sent about the book (click on the blue link she has in her post)....sounds like it would be appropriate only once you're at goal because of how it bulks up muscle and causes water weight gain, doesn't burn fat, and muscle weighs more than fat (space-wise). I just wanted to mention that in case Newbies are looking to add this into their weight loss initially. Go lighter instead, Newbies, as is mentioned in the MWL.com site. My daughter has always been fit (aerobics istructor since high school and now works part time in 3 gyms while in grad school). She wanted to add P90X to her own personal routine and ended up bulking up quite a bit in her thighs, which is where she was hoping to slender down....I think a lot of it is your body type, your carb/overall calorie intake, your hormones, etc. I think I've had too many issues to try heavy weights (shoulder surgery, lower back and neck issues). But I really do see the benefit once at goal weight because muscle burns so many calories even after a workout.

Thanks for sharing!

Debbie ~ I completely agree. The acute phase of Medi is not the time to try to build muscle. I kept my exercise fairly light during acute & focused on fat loss with cardio like walking and the elliptical trainer.

Suzanna - Thanks for clearing that up for the Newbies. You are doing great and will be able to keep your weight off because of all you've been learning and changing in your life. And, because you're doing it so "early" hopefully you won't have the saggy skin issues in arms and thigh areas! Yo-yoing is so unhealthy.

Hi y'all....

Just reading up and saw the comments about using weights.
I agree that you shouldn't "lift" weights during the acute phase BUT that doesn't mean to not use weights at all.
Muscle may weigh more but it burns more calories to maintain. After you've done some weight training and your muscles are somnewhat sore, they are using calories to repair themselves.
You want to do some weight training about 2-3 times a week and alternate with cardio.
I'm so glad you're all doing well and continue to learn from each other.
Stay strong and stay the course

Hi Debbie and all you maintainers. My name is Cindy and I've been at this weight for about 5 1/2 years. Debbie invited me over here to post. It's kinda funny, I found a nice group over on EFGT and have stayed there even though I've been in maintenance. I came to LCF after fighting maintenance for 3 years to find some plans to make it easier......oops work calls.....I'll be back!!

Cindy (Dodgern) - Hi! I'm glad you're checking in on us! I wasn't down on weights, just concerned about heavy weights early on cuz then you'll build bulk and it's covered by fat and may still weigh more. Do you have an opinion about how much weight to "lift" in the acute phase? That's why I was refering the Newbie's back to the MWL corporate site. How soon before goal did you begin lifting? At what weight (poundage-wise) tops?

CindyCRNA - Welcome! I think we'd be interested in knowing what you are doing to successfully maintain for the past 5 1/2 years. How has your thinking about food, particularly carbs changed since getting on maintenance? How has your activity changed to help you stay at maintenance?

SEE, this is what is SO GREAT about this BB.......everyone is here to help each other! Thank you all SO much for the information. My clinic advised not to do too much weightlifting, but after the first 4 weeks they advised me to do SOME (all though they didn't tell me how much, or how often) on days I'm not doing aerobic exercises.
I need to tone up as I'm losing, but I will take it easy! I'll keep that link bookmarked so when I'm in maintenance I can refer back to it!
Thanks again.........you're all GREAT!

I ate too many carbs before and made myself miserable. I strictly counted calories. Now the order of importance is Calories, (1400-1550) Protein (Roughly 40% or 150 grams or a little less but always triple digit) Carbs (Roughly 40% also but mostly complex) Fat (as little as possible without being ridiculous, usually falls about 20-25%) I have a much bigger emphasis on protein. I eat 4 times a day and NEVER miss breakfast. I hate aerobics but do weight lifting 2-4 times a week. And I weigh every other day or so. Also, I use ****** like a religion!

I packed my food for the whole day this morning, and made it through 2 parties without eatting anything but what I brought with me, and it wasn't hard at all. I finally feel like I am focussed again. I know I will break into the 130's soon.........which I still can't wrap my brain around.

As far as strength training goes, my clinic told me to just to things like squats, crunches, and leg lifts, and then use no more than 5 lb weights to do some arm weight training. They adviced against using any kind of machine unless I was just using very little weight on it. I run 3-4 miles 4 times a week for my cardio, and go my Gazelle or a video on days that I can't run (ususally do to weather).

I take Nature Made Liquid Softgel Multi for Her (multivit), Member's Mark Super B complex w/ C, and a Kroger Vitamin B-12 2500 mcg sublingual every AM (along with other things...but these have my Vit B). It's just my preference to take so much Vit B....and with my immune stuff/allergies it makes me feel I'm providing better for what my body is missing out. (Cuz otherwise you get some Vit B in grains, fruits, etc and we're typically not eating those or that much of "those" in the acute phase.)

This is info I found online: "
B vitamins are essential for growth, development, and a variety of other bodily functions. They play a major role in the activities of enzymes, proteins that regulate chemical reactions in the body, which are important in turning food into energy and other needed substances. B vitamins are found in plant and animal food sources."

Because of your question, and my wanting to look up more info, I found this on a Mayo Clinic website: "Researchers at Johns Hopkins University report that women with breast cancer tend to have lower vitamin B12 levels in their blood serum than do women without breast cancer. In a subsequent review of these findings, it was hypothesized that vitamin B12 deficiency may lead to breast cancer because it could result in less folate being available to ensure proper DNA replication and repair." Makes me really glad that I'm taking what I am....even post bilateral mastectomies/TRAM flap breast reconstruction surgeries....my body could use the extra recovery for my DNA!

"There is some evidence that intramuscular injections of vitamin B12 given twice per week might improve the general well-being and happiness of patients complaining of tiredness or fatigue."

~Lea~I take a sub lingual B12 every morning before heading out on my walk. I am convinced I have more energy because of it..but that could just be me. I get mine at Walgreens and stock up when they have the buy 1 get one sales. The brand is Nature's Bounty/2500mcg. The bottle is green and the label is white with mostly green writing. There is a picture of two cherries where it says natural cherry flavor.

Debbie, after looking up the meds you listed, I'm even more confused. With all those separate vitamins, are you duplicating? I didn't look up the Kroger brand but the sublingual B 12 complex has folic acid, B-6 and biotin.

And the ingredients listed in the Member's Mark Super B complex with C are:
Ingredients
Serving Size: 1 Tablet. Amount Per Serving: Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) 150mg, Thiamin (Vitamin B1) 10mg, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) 10mg, Niacin (Niacinamide) 25mg, Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride) 4mg, Folic Acid 400mcg, Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) 15mcg, Biotin 30mcg, Pantothenic Acid 5.5mg

So maybe there are sublingual B 12's that aren't complex? I don't want to take more than I need to, but don't want to not be getting enough.

Jo - is this a complex or just B 12? I'm going to look this one up. There's a Walgreen's right on the corner.
