Changing my life!

Hey guys! New member here and I would like to introduce myself.
I am currently a senior in high school about to graduate and figured it was time for me to change my life style. Senior year during football I peaked at a WHOPPING 351 lbs. I always told myself, oh I'll start tomorrow, over and over. I finally decided to check out Medi because my friends(who are very over weight as well) were doing great until they quit.

So I did it. I had my first appointment the 20th of May 2010. I am doing so well! They allowed me 1000 calories a day of pure protein. 5 days later(today) I am 10lbs lower according to my scale! I can't wait to go back in thursday for my first check-up.

So why did I decide to do Medi?

Well I am going to pre-med next year at Texas A&M and decided that as a doctor I need to believe in what I practice. I also have talked with air force recruiters and if I can drop the weight I will join ROTC.

I think it's very doable! Yeah it's 135 lbs, but the doctor said I should be able to cut it in nine months(That would be tremendous)

I was always the big kid and that's about to change.

Thanks for reading guys and expect to hear from me again

Welcome, SLCDragon!

I think that it is wonderful that you are getting healthy at such a young age. I don't have any regrets, but if I knew then what I know now, I think I would have had a much happier and fun time in college. I was in college during the low fat Susan Powter years and remember starving through the day lots of fat free foods, which just made me hungrier. I didn't understand how I could be so "healthy" yet gaining 65 pounds during college! Now I realize that I don't play well with simple carbs & I don't have to be hungry all the time. Protein is key! My life is so good now & isn't ruled by foods.

I hope we hear from you often & get the opportunity to cheer you along during your journey!

Good for you! It sounds like you have a great attitude and you have some great goals set in place. There will be hard days but if you just focus on the positive goals you have set, and focus on being healthy you will be through it with no problem. Best of luck! And congratulations on deciding at a young age that you want to make the change. It will make the rest of your life easier.

Big welcome to you! As a mom of 3 boys - one with weight issues - I have to say I am PROUD of you for joining and I'm sure your parents are thrilled as well! You have some very big goals and you are so smart for making the decision in high school to get your body healthy so NOTHING holds you back. Way to go! I wish I had been that mature at your age!

Just make sure you eat your veggies next week. I know you boys aren't big fans of those... lol. Best of luck and stick around here! Your fresh attitude is a great inspiration!

Welcome and I really enjoyed reading your story! You are so smart to do this before you go to college. I started gaining weight in college and never stopped until I started Medi (11 year span). It is hard to control things in college so if you have a handle on things going into it you will be in good shape! Best of luck to you!

I am a middle-aged woman and I lost 70 lb in 4 months. I am sure, for a young person like you it will be as fast or even faster. The key here is to stick with the program! IT WORKS!

Great idea to lose weight before you go to college. My son also lost his extra 35 lb before he went to college and he explained to me that people will keep the perception of you as a "fat" person even if you lose weight later but if they never see you fat - it is a different story. All around - you have lots of reasons to succeed on this diet - Good Luck - and report on your progress.

Thank you so much!

and to the poster above me (didn't catch your name before hitting reply), you will not regret it!

I do have a question though... It's week two and I'm implementing 30 minute high intensity workouts a day. I am burning roughly 740 cal during that period... is that too much when my intake is only 1000 plus the veggies?

I've kind of felt weird today.. I don't know how to explain it.. and the workout was not painful, but discomforting. I never had this problem prior to the diet.

Thanks for the help!

Did you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or weak? I felt that way for the first couple of weeks of working out on acute.

Let your clinic know how much you are working out. They may raise your protein intake. On days that I worked out, I ate 100-200 additional protein calories.

I ended up keeping my exercise pretty light during acute (30 minutes of walking or elliptical 4x per week), but I know that there are others on the board who worked out really hard during the acute phase. Hopefully, they will chime in.

Ya, you need to slow down. Technically, you're supposed to add in 1/2 the amount of calories you burn in workouts. So add in another 370 to your diet on gym days. I'm training for a half marathon and that's what they told me. Working out that intensely with what you're eating isn't going to hasten the loss anyway. Besides, you need to be careful! That's a lot of exercise in 30 minutes - wow!

Makes sure you tell your clinic what's going on as well!

I have just decided that I am going to keep this thread as a journal, so to speak. I will post once a week my new weigh-ins etc. I think it will help with my journey to lose the weight

Hi Jake.. although I'm not following medi weight loss plan, it's great that you decided to start making these changes in your life before serious health issues comes in. I was 20 years old weighing at 293 at a young age as well. Good luck on your journey

That is awesome! Congratulations! Remember how you feel now because there may come a day when you don't have as great of a loss and you'll need to remember that this program does work, if you stick to it. My Good weeks, help me get through my not so good weeks (like this week).

Wow! That's fantastic, Jake! I'm really hoping you'll keep up the good work, and go the distance. You have a wonderful life ahead of you, and at a healthy weight, you'll enjoy it so much more. (Take it from one who DIDN'T go through it at a healthy weight!)
