cjbee- I hadn't noticed this thread til today. Mediweightloss diagnosed me with insulin resistence when I started the program initially 9/08....yes, I was in it MWL for over 4 months then had a family crisis and quit....regained the 26 lbs and started again 12/28/09 and now down 31 lbs. Anyway....when I was diagnosed with insulin resistence I was started on Metformin twice daily and my Hgb A1C was 5.3 (non-diabetic) after about 4 wks on MWL. But though I took the Metformin (500 mg twice daily) when I regained the weight my A1C was up to 5.9 (NEARLY diabetic!) and Metformin was increased to three times a day and I restarted MWL. My last check was about 6 wks ago and it was down to 5.2. I KNOW I need this lifestyle change! Both of my parents became adult onset diabetics, and so did 3 out of 4 of my grandparents and several aunts. I don't want to go there....too many arterial and organ problems can occur due to blood sugar issues for diabetics.

Are you diabetic?

I don't have to check my blood sugars....but the A1C test is a test which shows how in control the blood sugars are for the previous 2 to 3 months; and as you can see above my A1C numbers came down being on Metformin plus the medi diet. I'm back into normal range but still take Metformin three times daily. Too much family history and I certainly don't want to mess with artery problems caused by high blood sugars. Without Metformin however, the insulin resistance would make me unable to break down carbs and nutrition, make me continue to feel unsatisfied and hungry, and actually take the unbroken down carbs and store them as fat!

When I went for the initial visit with Medi, my BS was 283....didn't realize I was diabetic. I got with the program, and my BS is no longer an issue. I check them every few days, and they never go over the accepted limit. I did not go on medication even though my DR wanted me to. Hope this helps!

I went on the Metformin so that the meds WOULD help. It was the insulin resistance and eating a regular diet (pre-Medi) that made me put on all the weight to begin with! Perhaps some day I'll cut down Metformin, but with a family history of diabetes I'm not going to chance undetected high blood sugars and have organ or vascular disease as a result! So, are you checking your own blood sugars at home?

I do check my own at my parents house. My dad is diabetic and I use his testing kit every few days. My fasting usually is around 83 which is a big change considering what they were pre-MWL....You will get off the Metformin.....Type 2 sucks! I was diabetic when was pegnant with my daughter....hated the insulin injections....went 10 years without any problems and then SLAM!!!!

Wake up call.....

The big thing too is what are your blood sugars two hours after eating a meal? How has your body handled the calories? Reader's Digest this week has a good self test to see if you have prediabetes. Just the few sentences I've read from you you are at risk (previous gestational diabetes, family history, overweight...). I'm so glad you're getting the weight off now and taking control of your health. It would be interesting to see what your A1C is, this tests blood sugar trends for the previous 3 months and can predict how bad it has been...the worst mine was was up to 5.9 and a couple months ago it was down to 5.2 (safe!) I credit MWL for this in my life, because my own MD wasn't doing anything about it prior to that time and I knew it was lurking around the corner! Don't mess with diabetes, my friend!

i agree the medical community just sseems to blow off diabetes and insulin resistance and it is extremely confusing and dangerous-we have to teach ouselves everything using online tools etc-it stinks

A lot of the problem is that most docs were taught to CURE, not to prevent. As gatekeepers in the healthcare insurance industry they have had a conflict. But, nowadays, they are finally learning that evidence proves so many diseases can be prevented by simple means early on....but they don't make as much money out of it going that route, do they? They just have to reflect back on WHY they really entered a healthCARE field to begin with.... (!)
