nomorerolls- I have tried Land O Lakes and Garelick Farms, and I also use the SF FF Vanilla Coffemate. Look for the GREEN "Sugar Free" indicator in addition to the blue "fat free"

loneinaustin- I am dying without the AS, I feel starving all the time, and I am floating with the amount of fluids I am drinking! I am trying to last another week without it, but I am going to rejoin to get it I think next week. You are much stronger then I am if you can do this w/o the AS!!

amy-how is your sodium intake?

Elizabeth- 2 inches is awesome!!!!!

Saranne- I have not had any luck with Walden Farms products, I always end up tossing them in the trash.

Well everyone, I am going to rejoin next week, I need the AS and every day without it is like torture. I feel like I am starving, and I am not getting used to it. I am going to have to pick up Fri nights at work in order to make it work, and if I dont work that extra shift then I am going to have to miss my Medi that week. The cough medicine knocked me out of Ketosis for 1 day, but I got back in with another day, so I don't think I did too much damage.

WHat do you think my clinic will think when I join and I am actually on like week 3? I hope they dont mind, since it is a new clinic. I am really hoping the Wakefield clinic is better than my last one. I still want all of the paperwork, I am confused by some of the fruits & veggies allowed/disallowed so I am really only eating greens and protein right now.

Can anyone confirm for me what comes in the START up pack? I forget what I got last time, and I am trying to anticipate any extra costs for the first week.

Well, I had vowed not to have a single piece of candy until I had reached my goal weight and then reward myself with one piece of homemade fudge. But yesterday, my two year old granddaughter got a Valentine basket at day school and wanted to share her M & M's with grandmother. She actually opened the bag, brought me 2 pink ones and said "Happy Balentie, Grandmommy" So I gave her a huge hug and ATE THE M & M's!! She was so happy I figured it was definitely worth a day out of ketosis. Maybe her joy was my savior because I am down another pound today and still in ketosis.

Seriously, I have been on every diet out there - own my on and medically supervised - and Medi is the only one that has worked and that I have been able to actually live with. It cost more than the other plans, but cutting out fast food and sodas almost pays for it each week. And instead of buying new clothes because the old ones are too tight, I am a seamstress, so I am taking in seams and redoing things in my closet I thought I would never wear again.

I have a feeling it is too high. I've noticed that items with low-to-no calories, sugar or carbs are still loaded with salt.

Anyone know what a good range is for salt intake?

Netrition posts a recommended daily intake chart on their website.

The range is 1500 to 2400 milligrams daily. If you are sodium sensitive you need to be on the low end. Only your doctor can tell you that. The way your body processes the sodium is a factor in water retention and that bloated feeling.

Does everyone get the mid-week MIC injection? Will not getting it slow weight loss or have any other effects? I got it last week, since it was my first week, but didn't this week. I feel like I have a lot less energy today, I thought it might be from that...or maybe it's just from chasing my little ones around!

I am on week 6 of Medi, loving it and am down 24 lbs! Having my first issue now, as I am sick. Started as a cold, but is now stomach issues and lethargy.
Was wondering if anyone had any tips for comforting non-carb foods? All I want is toast, pasta, etc...but am choking down egg whites and chicken broth. Not sure how much longer can hold out!
You guys always seem to have good ideas!
Thanks,
Heather

HeatherT,

I can so relate this week with your request and feeling sick. Don't blow it...it's not worth it!

I blew it this week...I had a sinus infection, felt off balance, and on top of that had a crazy grad school and work schedule. By Tuesday evening I was at a seminar where I was wined and dined and had prepared myself calorie and carb-wise to indulge a little. Well, it ended up being more carbs when I chose an indulgent dessert. Of course I was thrown out of ketosis and the next day my body reacted to the assault (remember I said I thought I was allergic to corn/corn syrup? and I think that is in chocolate). Needless to say I have had a horrible week, been on antibiotics for the sinus infection, upsetting my stomach, getting more dehydrated, and not eating on program. Now I'm wondering if I'm a little mentally afraid of being under 170 lbs and having to sustain it. Am I trying to sabotage my weight loss goals? I need my Medi buddies to keep me accountable!

Look how well you've done! Me, I think I'm gong to go back to week one for a couple of days. Not looking forward to the carb die-off again. Remember how yucky that is? You don't want to go there!

I tried both ways..first two weeks without mid-week shots and last two weeks with mid-week shot. Definitely felt a difference in energy and in less water retention as there is a mild diuretic in the shot. I will be getting mid-week shot from now on.

Debbie-
Thanks, I needed to hear that. Have been looking around the lo-carb boards to remember why I am doing this! I did break down and take Robitussin last 2 days. Has sugar but no alcohol, and so far have stayed in ketosis. I am super dehydrated right now, but can't stomach water. Also am still taking AS, but skipped others pills today.
Interesting about the self-sabotage...I agree that is definitely an issue for me, and being sick is an easy out to slip into bad habits.
OK, I have put the toast down and will remain carb-free! Good luck with week 1 again and thanks!

I'm not sure if this will help anyone else but whenever I am faced with a tempting food I concentrate and repeat to myself over and over "I don't eat that anymore"...then flashes of the same series of images goes through my mind almost like a movie.
The first one is of what I look like naked, the next one is of the ketosis strips and the happy feeling that comes with seeing that I am in ketosis, and the next one is what I imagine myself to look like when I've reached my goal weight.
I know this probably sounds absolutely crazy but it has worked many times. There is a bag of M&M's on my kitchen counter that I haven't touched other than to clean underneath it. I have baked chocolate chip cookies three different times for my daughter and not had one even though I could smell them all through the house. I've made sandwiches and pasta for my husband with no cravings and this morning I sat in the food court for nearly and hour at Costco (where I used to stuff myself with pizza, hot dogs, sundae's and churro's) while waiting for new tires on my car and was actually grossed out watching everyone else eat like crazy.
This hasn't happened to me with other diets. I was always the one mad because everyone else could eat whatever they wanted and not gain weight. If I did lose a little I was quick to reward myself with more food. I am SO glad that's not my mindset today.

This is good to know. I just finished week 4 and have never gone in for the mid-week shot. I'm going to try it this week.

Thank you!! I feel like I'm not even losing weight this week. Don't know if it's adding the carbs in or what. But, I'm definitely going to try to get the mid-week shots from now on. Thanks for your reply!

Pumped it up to 3 miles this morning! Took me 49 minutes to walk it so about a 3.5ish mph pace. Not bad! Scales said 223 this morning......270 pounds gone! I look in the mirror and feel good about how I look but I still look heavy in my photos. What's up with that?

Jerry, youlook amazing. What you are experiencing is what many of us experience when looking at "after" pictures. It really does take a while to realize that it truly is a thinner better you in those pictures.

Believe me, we can all see the terrific difference. You will too, one of these days, you will say...that really is me!

Congrats on the 3 miles. Time is good. Keep up the good work.

Just wanted to say a quick goodbye to those of you that have been supporting me along the way. I appreciate those that tried to help me.

And congrats to those of you that have had some success on this diet. I would really love to hear about some long term success, it might give me some faith in this WOE.

I have decided that the cost and track record of this program is not for me. I have been following the program for 15 solid days and have seen the scale go down. Without the appetite suppresant, I can't take the starvation anymore. Being starving all day and waking up starving a night has obviously been a wake up call for me. The AS may have hid it from me my first bout at the program, but this doesnt FEEL healthy to me. And I have reservations about long term damage to my metabolism with such a low calorie diet. I have done this sort of thing in the past, and that is why I am in the position I am in now, can't afford to risk it again.

Best of luck to all of you, I really hope you find what you are looking for. If this plan works for you, more power to you! I wish you the best! I just cannot ignore the nagging in my brain telling me that I can live this way forever, and that I might be doing more harm than good.

I'm much more concerned with the damage I could do by remaining obese. I hope to avoid "long term damage to my metabolism" by following the program all the way through to maintenance. From what I understand, any "long term damage to metabolism" is done by constantly gaining and regaining large amounts of weight.

The other thing I'm doing is following examples of other people on this board. Fit2010, for example, is working on school. Others are planning families and weddings. I'm trying to fill my life back up with things that are fulfilling, enjoyable, and fun. I'm enjoying working my way back into running. And I'm pouring myself into creative outlets.

Last year I had started sliding back into eating as recreation. I had gotten used to being able to eat more between a pregnancy and nursing. When those things ended, I should have cut back my calories and tightened things up. But I didn't. And I gained weight. It's really fun getting back into life again and eating for energy/nutrition. That's my perspective anyway.

I have actually experienced hunger in my life. Hope none of you ever have. I wouldn't use the term starvation to describe being on a diet in America. Ever.

LostinAusten, A couple weeks ago we had a conversation on the Jan thread about coffee and you mentioned Torani sugar-free coffee flavor syrups from World Market. Last Sunday I went out and bought myself the Almond Roca and the Hazelnut flavors. Love the Hazelnut as it is (I use about 3 tsps plus 1/2 and 1/2) and this AM to the Almond Roca (3 tsps plus 1/2 and 1/2) I added 1 heaping tsp of good quality coconut oil. This may sound yucky to some because it does make it a little oily looking, but as a GI candida treatment C.O. works very well. I've been sick this week, on antibiotics (which makes the GI candida stuff worse, which then makes you crave carbs!) So, this concoction of Almond Roca with C.O. flavoring is very dessert-like but medi friendly because it has splenda in it and the best oil possible. Thanks again for the tip about Torani syrup flavors, LostinAusten!

BTW: Regarding my former post about "sabatoging my own weight loss goals, afraid of getting less than 170 lbs" let me explain. I had a bilateral mastectomy in summer of 2007 when I was about 178 lbs. The reconstruction was done using my own belly fat to make my new breasts (a TRAM flap, where they cut the transrectus abdominal muscle - long muscle connecting from sternum to pelvis - in 1/2 longwise and leaving the belly fat attached loop it under other abd muscles, stuff it into empty skin tissue and make me a new full breast). So now, as I lose weight I'm also losing breast tissue mass. I guess, like Jerry, it will just take some getting used to my new body. Darn! Why don't I just lose in the butt and thighs!

Metabolism

For those of you concerned about your metabolism...

My metabolism was measured at the beginning of maintenance and it came out to 1800 calories per day if I do no activity whatsoever. Not bad. Since then I have purchased a Bodybugg, which measures metabolism and my daily caloric burn is always between 2000 and 2900 calories. I completed the acute phase of the program and went through the maintenance and wellness phases of the program. I have maintained my weightloss for 7 1/2 months.

I always made sure to eat all my calories and started strength training shortly after beginning the program to increase my muscle mass, and thus, metabolism. I always took the fat burner and B shots. I wanted every possible thing working to my advantage and metabolism.

I went off the AS while still in the acute phase as I kept forgetting to take them, so felt I no longer needed them. I have never been dependent on them.

I just wanted to comment on what Susie said above. After the first two weeks or so, I started forgetting to take the AS and really didn't notice it. I have continually lost every week and don't pay much attention to the AS anymore. I still take it every morning, but that's about it. Maybe one other time during the day if I think about it, but between my protein and my three cups of vegetables, I don't really feel like I need it.

Thank you LostinAustin
If you like lemon or lime shrimp, I posted a recipe for it on the dinner recipe thread.

I am very proud to tell you all that my daughter is expecting her first child in October. Anna is my baby girl even though she is 24, so I am thrilled, excited, anxious and every other emotion imaginable. She is a wonderful daughter and I know she will be a wonderful mom. Please keep her in your prayers as her pregnancy progresses.

This is even more of an incentive to lose weight. I want to be in maintenance by that time so I can spend money on baby clothes!!!

This is a copy and paste from another thread.

Jo and Susie,

You are absolutley correct about this being a lifestyle change. Those of us that have successfully made it through the acute phase and are now in wellness have committed to the program 100%. To those people who beleive that you are only going to eat 500-800 calories per day for the rest of your life are sadly misinformed and need to have a chat with your clinic to get the whole picture. I have maintained my weight for 14 months and currently eat between 1500-1800 calories per day. As for the comment about posters that come and go I can generally predict (99% of the time) who will be successful on the program and who will fail. (I have been pleasantly surprised on a couple of occassions and you know who you are). Those that are looking for a way around and manipulate the program are destined to fail. I can't count the number of times someone in week one or two has not followed the program and thinks it is OK because they felt it was just this once or someone in their life sabbatoged them. Unless someone held you down against your will and force fed you things that are not on the program you sabbatoged yourself!

Let's face it folks we didn't become fat or obese overnight. You can crunch the numbers all you want but the fact is isn't it worth the money to get back your health. You can spend the money now to get back your health or you can spend it later on the medical expenses and increased insurance premiums. The choice is yours.

If you feel the program is not for you please find one that is. Your health is the most important thing.

Out of the shadows for now.

McBoo

Hello,
My total weight lose for January was 19.2 lbs! However (not an excuse) with my son's hectic school/sport schedule and working 12 to 15 hrs a day I've fallen off the wagon. The last 2 weeks I've been too tired to prepare my food like I was doing and only made it to the gym twice in 2 weeks. The results were very apparent at my weight in last Monday, I gained 2.2lbs. That was the wake up call. Today I got back on track, not working over the weekend, making time to prepare my food and made it to the gym. I'm just hoping that in tomorrow's weigh in I haven't gained.

Totally agree with Jo, Susie and McBoo, it's a life style change and a 100% commitment to the program. I reaped the results when I was committed 100% and I also reaped the results when I was only 25% committed.

I thank everyone on this sight for their support and encouragement.
~Karla

Hope everyone had a fun, candy free Valentine's Day! Life has been beyond hectic lately and I have not had a chance to update my stats or avatar. I hit 90 pounds lost recently and am thrilled! Can't wait to get to 100 lost! Like some the vets have said this is a 100% lifestyle change if you want to lose it and MAINTAIN that loss. We all have bad days from time to time when it comes to our food choices, myself definitely included, however I remind myself this way of eating is now my life and my choice. It is a marathon, not a sprint, and has been an awesome journey so far!!

Congrats to all the "losers" out there! Keep up the great work! Jerry, you are looking great!

I gained 3lbs my 3rd week because I was on pain meds for a broken toe and was eating more, but turned around and lost it the next week. This program is great about getting you right back on track. My clinic counselors are super and really work with all us "lifestyle changers"
