I think that hair loss is associated with ANY very rapid weight loss, regardless of methodology. I am taking Biotin regularly. One of the reasons that I stopped going to my clinic in December was that at 50 pounds lost, the hair loss really kicked in for me. The clinic said that it would correct itself when I went into maintenance. I went ahead and started maintenance and it did correct itself. I'm going to go back on Medi (at least eating style) to lose the last 15 pounds and I'm pretty sure that hair loss won't be an issue with that small amount of weight to lose.
I'd assume that since your body is going through radical changes with rapid weight loss, it shifts its resources (hormones, etc) to other functions rather than hair growth/maintenance. Pregnancy sees this kind of change as well. A large number of people lose very little hair while pregnant, and then lose a ton after they give birth.

Yikes... i already have thinning hair, I am not interested in getting thinner. Next trip to CVS i will be picking up Biotin and Zinc (right?) to stop this before it starts, I am just finishing up my third week.
I have to say, that if I do end up thinning more because of this diet I will be stopping it. Call it vanity, but I cant even wear my hair certain ways anymore because it's so thin already. Hope everyone has great luck with Biotin! Fingers crossed for us all! |

Yes, she dropped about 100 pounds, but she simply cannot leave the house without a wig anymore. She's very happy, though, so that's saying something. The overall health benefits probably outweigh the risks of hair loss, but I gotta tell you this is a concern and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a big deal. |

I do take biton 5,000 mg a day and I use a shampoo from sallys that kemo patience use.... I just started that a week ago but dont see a change .. when I go in to weight next time I am going to ask them I have heard that one of the medi meds causes that in some people.//

This happened to me on Medi and the nurse said it is not uncommon. Her suggestion was to be sure to take the vitamins --and the hair loss stopped. I was not eating enough and was skipping vitamins.

A piece of good news - yesterday I was getting my hair cut and colored an my hairdresser (unsolicited) remarked on the fact that I had a lot of new hair growth. I asked what she was talking about and she lifted up my bangs to show me a lot of new hairs growing underneath. I stopped acute in December, so it's good to know that what I lost is growing back.

I take all the meds and 5000 miligrams of bioton, as my skin specialist told me too. I use the shampoo for Kimo patients. This week I decided to eat more of my calories in Meat and less in other things. I think the combination has slowed my now. But!! I already have think hair and I hope it does not continue!!! Giggle

I take 5000 mcg of Biotin in two small gel pills once a day. I have not had the hair loss since starting this regimen. I did find that my hair still fell out if I took the regular pills. The gel pills seem to work better...maybe more absorbable by the body.?.

I take Nature Made Biotin 2500 mcg x 2 once a day.
Just FYI, following logic...the hair shaft has sebaceous glands that secrete sebum which is loaded with lipids. This diet is very intent on burning fat as opposed to carbs or protein. The body will burn whatever is most easily accessed and readily available. Just my assumption, but what makes sense to me is that the body is utilizing the lipids through fat burning and they may not be as readily available to nourish the hair shafts as they were when they were not as important. It makes sense to me because if you look at more anorexic people they have extremely dry, brittle, thin hair. Just a thought...
