Susie & Jo- Thanks so much for the encouragement I am trying not to get upset about the small loss because I've been trying to get to the 1's for sooooo long! I had hoped to be here by my daughter's 1st birthday Oct 14th, so I'm a few weeks late on that but it's a nice thing to see a 1 instead of a 2 at the start of that scale

Jo, thanks for the info on antibiotics. I had no idea. Even with the bronchitis I managed to get a 5 mile walk and 1 yoga class in this week. Hopefully now that I'm feeling better I'll get more of that in too! Had already planned on going to yoga tomorrow morning & Sunday afternoon.

I ate a brownie and had a Coke

I've been on this for a month, following it PRECISELY and have lost 13.6 pounds. I play a lot of tennis and have been struggling with fatigue and dizziness so they upped my calories and told me to eat some fruit and protein before a match. That helped sometimes, but not always.

This week, I've felt like a dishrag. Got my B12 shot yesterday. Today, I ate a good breakfast, packed my lunch box full of healthy food so I could make it through my tennis match and drank a Powerade Zero. Despite eating fruit, almonds and a medi bar, I was so weak and shaky in the second set I thought I'd have to quit. Between the second and third set, one of my teammates (a nutritionist) said to get some sugar in me and somebody else got me a Coke and a brownie off the food table. A few sips of Coke and half a brownie and I was myself again and we won the last set in 15 minutes.

I haven't had a Coke in 4 years and probably won't again soon, but I obviously needed something drastic today. I don't know what price I'll have to pay, but I can't imagine having blood sugar so low you almost faint is a good thing and the grapes, strawberries & raisins weren't doing the job.

I'm sure this is obvious, but have you had "fasting" bloodwork done to check your blood sugar? Low blood sugar runs in my family and mine is only slightly below normal. But, if you haven't checked it while fasting from the night before, you won't really know about your blood sugar. You may want to look into that - and informing your doctor, of course.

Other than that, looks like you are doing great on MEDI. Like you, I started in the low 160s with not as much weight to lose as many on the plan. It sounds like you are less than satisfied even though 13.6 pounds is an excellent amount of weight loss for a one month period. We, who only have just 30 or so pounds to lose do not lose it as rapidly as those with many more pounds to shed. And, those with more weight to lose likewise experience slower weight losses as they approach their goal weight. So, please don't be discouraged with a 13.6 pound loss in a month's time. That's great! Remember, you can't compare yourself to others who are not similarly situated. I started at 162 and was down 16 pounds after a month. I don't know your age, height, etc., but those factors aside, our figures are pretty close. I was thrilled with the speed of my losses and still am pleased with MEDI, even while in maintenance. You'll be there too before you know it!

Good luck finding the source of your weakness - Jane

I dont like raw veggies (except for carrots - which are not allowed, and celery sticks). So measuring cooked veggies was a struggle, and again Im pretty sure I went over on calories every day.

Im still in Ketosis, so I dont I think I'll do too bad. We'll just have to see.
I found that I like raw cauliflower with a little Light Ranch dressing. I also discovered I like Broccoli salad- which has raw broccoli in it. If you want the recipe let me know! I never liked broccoli much before, but I do like it that way

Jessica, take that loss and run girl. It is better than ZERO! Or plus .4! Last week I only lost .6 but was happy with it since it was the week before TOM and expected it anyway. Congrats on being in ONEderland!!!! My WI is in the morning at 1030, and I hope I can see the difference I did not see last week too.

I started playing tennis after 2 months on medi and 40lbs dropped...I had exactly the same symptoms that you describe and would overdo it way to easily...to the point i would go home in the shower and just puke. I found my middle ground but now I am playing 3-4 times a week and I eat 2 pieces of whole grain bread (like 5 net carbs a slice) with some PB2 on them before I play and that gives me lasting energy...

I don't know where you stand in your journey so far but maybe mention that to them...they told me I could do it but it was only after I told them many times about how I was dying on the court lol.

I played alot of tennis in highschool, did nothing in my 20's and now am playing alot...I joined the USTA men's 3.5 league and that has been a blast.

I sure hope you can find a good medium for yourself. Feeling like that that much has to get old and upsetting. Good luck to ya!

what about trying an apple instead of grapes/ strawberries. Apples are higher in sugar, but have fiber in them so their glycemic index is low. Or try having some kind of fruit juice. The natural sugars in them have GOT to be better than coke and brownies.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm pretty satisfied with 13.6 pounds, and I'm doing exactly what I should. I like the program, but not the wrung out feeling so I think this incident will help me pinpoint what's wrong.

I play tennis 3-4 times a week and always take fruit, almonds and Powerade in a lunch box, and it usually works OK. Yesterday, I had already eaten a 3 strawberries with 1.5 tsp of peanut butter and a small apple before the match. During the match I stuffed grapes and almonds in my mouth on every changeover. By the second set I was so lightheaded I saw stars when I bent over to pick up a ball. It was amazing how fast real sugar set things right. I still feel better today than I have all week. I'm going to ask them Monday about the ramifications of low blood sugar and I promise I won't add Coke & brownies to my regular diet plan. Just for the record, the brownie was kind of good but the Coke tasted gross.

Thanks for your help, everybody.

Weigh-in was yesterday. Down 2.5 more pounds. This weekend's challenge? Surviving a wedding while staying on plan. My Maid of Honor dress was the reason I finally took the plunge to call Medi in the first place six weeks ago. Dress shopping was a wake up call that my indifference to my weight gain had to stop and the gain had crossed into 'really noticable' and I wasn't able to hide it as well as I thought I was. I've always been told there was no way I could weigh what I did since I didn't look it. Well, I kept telling myself that was still the case and not to be too concerned. Wow, trying on the rehersal dress felt amazing. O can't believe what a difference 24 pounds makes! I'm a happy girl

I do step on the scale more frequently now to make sure I don't stray upward, but just don't test for ketosis. You might call and ask what they recommend at the clinic.
By the way, since you are also in Dallas, I want to let you know about another low carb product source, Francis Simun Bakery on Commerce Street in the Deep Ellum area. Among other things, such as gluten-free breads, they sell low carb bread products. All of their low carb products use the same basic recipe combining organic wheat gluten, garbanzo flour, black bean flour, canola oil, golden flax seed, wheat germ, molasses, onion, yeast & sea salt.
According to their Nutrition Facts label on their loaf of bread, a 25 gram slice has 41 calories, 2.48 grams of carbohydrate, 1 gram of fiber and 4 grams of protein. I have tried the bread, hot dog bums, bagel chips & seasoned croutons and all were good, denser but more flavorful than most bread. They also bake hamburger buns, pizza crusts and tortillas. Since all use the same recipe, nutritional values for each of their low carb products may be determined by weighing on a food scale and applying the values provided for the 25g slice of bread. The bakery bakes to order, so if I call my order in on one day, the order is baked the following day when it will be ready for pick up after 4 pm.
Congrats on getting to maintenance so quickly!
-Jane

I HATED broccoli before Medi...I just wanted the stems and not the tops (it's a texture thing with me). However, the first meal of wk. 2 when I could have veggies, the first thing I had was broccoli and it was, by far, the best broccoli I have ever eaten! Now I eat it a little more often, but especially like it roasted in the oven mixed with some cauliflower, a little olive oil, garlic, and salt and pepper. Even dh who doesn't eat many veggies will eat it that way.

Tracy, I would love to have your recipe for the broccoli salad. I'm trying to expand my broccoli horizons now that I like it

WI was yesterday and down another 2 lbs. Total for 40 days is 20.5 lbs...not too bad. However, my water was up another 2 lbs. this week. It has gone up 2 lbs. every week for about the last 4 weeks. Any ideas? The NP never seems concerned about it, and bp was 107/72, so that was decent also. Any ideas as to why I'm retaining the water would be great. I'm pretty sure it's not sodium, as I don't eat out and never add salt to what I cook at home. I'm open to trying just aboutanything to get rid of the water next week!

Sharon & Justin- I too play tennis- I was very active in tennis for most of my life and really started to pick up again when I began medi.

Just so you know- and clearly not to discourage you from playing, because Tennis is a GREAT exercise.... But tennis is an anaerobic exercise- During anaerobic respiration, glucose will break down to lactic acid. The accumulation of lactic acid can reach a high level of concentration and cause muscle cramps and fatique.

I think more so than walking or jogging (or any other aerobic exercise) you will experience a greater fatigue and a depletion in glucose from playing tennis. Of course you shouldnt be feeling like you are going to pass out though- and def should have a fasting blood panel done. But thought this info might be helpful to explain how tennis can impact your body.

I lost 4lbs this week! I am so surprised because my losses have been around 1.5-2.5 for the past month or so! I have lost exactly 40lbs now in 10 weeks! I cannot believe it!

Hmm.. My first guess would be sodium-- besides eating out or adding salt to you foods, do you eat many packaged foods, deli meat, canned veggies, pickles or anything processed. Sometimes I am shocked when I go to eat something and then read the sodium! Otherwise it could be your water intake. It sounds backwards but I always get my water in daily and then usually drink a ton of water the day before and the day of my weigh in- it flushes everything out and has actually kept my water weight (besides TOM) pretty level.

Be prepared. Take Splenda/Truvia in your purse and some almonds to snack on. Then there's always the shrimp cocktail (minus cocktail) and fish to enjoy. A nice lean piece of lamb or steak is also acceptable.

Just turn down the dessert table. You might also want to ask a waiter what options they have for people on special diets... most places cater to diabetics, kosher, etc and always have food available.

And as always, water, water, water.

Enjoy the wedding and dance your heart out!! That counts as excersize!! LOL!!

Haha Well, basically tennis does something different to your body than other cardio exercises such as running, walking, jogging, biking etc. Because of the sprinting and stopping and the use of your muscles in hitting the ball and serving you use up more stored muscle energy. On a low cal diet with very few carbs and sugars you can more easily become tired from tennis (an anaerobic exercise) vs walking (aerobic). Also, in most cases tennis is not as good of an exercise for weight loss as any other aerobic exercise. It does however build muscle and stamina- so its kind of a toss up. I just think that it could explain why you may feel more dizzy or tired from tennis than from walking because it can cause a depletion of your glucose levels.

Ruff Week and I still see a loss!

Woot, woot!! Even with all the pain, the antibiotics, the confusion, the laziness, I still managed to lose 1.8 pounds!!

Next week, I know that if Im a little bit more prepared and get myself moving with a little excersize - I'll see bigger numbers!!

Thanks, Bre. That's great information. I'm not sure I completely understand the whole relationship between tennis & glucose, but this is a great starting point. This whole blood sugar thing may finally explain a lot of things. Today, I finally feel strong enough for a proper workout. I walked this morning and I'm going to the gym in a little while.

Had my week 8 WI today. Down -1.7 lbs! Lost 3 more inches off my waist! So my grand total is 21.2 in 2 months and my waist went from 39 to 35. Hopefully now I can go down a pants size.

Don't worry about the water weight. It is always fluctuating. Just make sure you are drinking enough water and watching sodium as it makes you retain water. I will put the broccoli salad recipe on the veggies/ sides recipe thread.

Every day is just another new adventure! Went to walmart this afternoon and bout me a pair of jeans. Took them home and tried them on and guess what! The size 42 reg fit! I just feel the need to share with everyone I run into! I was sitting in the sauna this morning after jogging a mile, weightlifting and an hour spin class when a guy walked in who was upper 3's or low 4's and once the steam stopped I just started with...It's always good to end a workout in here! He agreed and I then went on to say that it is hard to believe that last Christmas I had a very hard time getting around at almost 500 pounds and off we went....10 minutes later there were 5 guys all sitting around talking about how I did it! At Wal-Mart the check out lady asked why I had 2 different sizes of jeans (I got a 44 in case the 42 was too tight) and I told my story and 2 sets of people behind me wanted to know more! SWEET! I love it. I had another person get on my blog and said she was inspired by my story and has decided to quit smoking! Awesome!

~Jerry~We just need to get you on national TV...I think biggest loser should interview you even if you worked a different program! Wow...you are the best motivation and inspiration anyone could ever ask for!

(I do the same thing when I go in to buy clothing.....it really does feel good when a size 8 fits and is almost loose!)
