Kind of discouraged - day 10
Hi all,
I had my 1 week weigh-in and I lost overall 5.7 lbs, but 6.5 lbs. of fat. They said I gained in water weight, that's why it wasn't more. I thought the more you drank, the less water weight you had??? So, I'm on day 10 now and I know I'm not supposed to go on the scale, but I haven't lost any more. It isn't going up, but not down. I have been in ketosis all along. I will admit that I faltered maybe 2-3 times and ate a Fiber One bar and a small slice of pizza. But we're not talking the huge binges I used to have on high sugar, high fat food. I have been in the 500-1000 protein calories recommended by my clinic every day. I'm trying to stay closer to 500, but some days I'm so hungry I have to eat more protein. I'm drinking way more than 128 ounces of fluid. I'm taking the AS and all the supplements as prescribed. I'm kind of getting discouraged because I see and know so many people who lose so much more their first week. I mean, I started at 234.5 ....My first weigh in I was 228.8. I am eating about a 1/3 of the calories I was eating before. how can i not lose faster? I thought the early weight loss would be a lot more substantial. Any thoughts? |

Hang in there -and if you are really hungry -go for more lean protein. Those little carb slips can really slow you down. Your body is trying to change the way it accesses fuel from your body and it really needs to go after your fat stores. Every time you eat carbs, especially in the beginning, it will slow down this process. Watch your sodium intake - what are you eating for your protein? Processed meats, like deli meat, REALLY slow my body down. How many carbs are you eating every day?

Instead of beginning a new thread, why not come on over to our September thread where most members go every day to check and see "what's happening"? You are likely to get more responses there.
Shedding Pounds in September w/Medi Weightloss But, at first glance, here is my take on your situation. I have been in ketosis all along. I will admit that I faltered maybe 2-3 times and ate a Fiber One bar and a small slice of pizza. But we're not talking the huge binges I used to have on high sugar, high fat food. You are on day 10. Faltered maybe two or three times in 10 days? What is a "small" slice of pizza? Huge binges previously? Does that mean these were only "small" binges? 128 oz of "fluid" - is the majority of the fluid water? Or something else? I am sorry to be so blunt, but it does not sound like you have fully committed to being on this program. You did lose a reasonable amount of weight, but you also have sabotaged yourself. You really need to totally commit to this program for it to be successful. We are not perfect human beings, but we can make this commitment. Instead of giving yourself permission to go off program, why not give yourself permission to commit to the program fully? To commit to being healthy? To changing your life? I DO know what it is like since I have "been there, done that, and got that T-shirt". I do not know your height, but my starting weight was higher than yours, and my goal weight was the same as yours. I have made goal. It was not always easy, but I never ever went off program. I made the commitment. If you truly want to change your life, you need to make the commitment. This is not a diet, it is a way of life. Take a deep breath and make the commitment for yourself. It is your life, your choice, your money, and your health. Jo Last edited by Desert-Rose7; 09-20-2009 at 10:03 AM.. |

appreciate everyone's honesty...i don't mind bluntness
I'm about 5'6". I've been eating mostly egg whites, egg beaters, shrimp, chicken, lean beef. for carbs i'm having salad, cooked veggies, sugar free jello, that's about it. my point in talking about binges, is that instead of eating 20 Oreos, I had 1 fiber one bar. I am still craving sweets a lot and I am very hungry especially at night. I find it hard to commit to the program while being so hungry all the time. I have friends who are on it, take the same AS and aren't hungry at all. In fact, they barely feel like eating and force themselves to eat the 500 protein cals. I dunno. I know it's a change of life, not a diet, so in that way, even though i slipped, i think it's a huge accomplishment for me to snack on a string cheese or steak tip, vs. a 2 c. ice cream sundae!! the other thing im confused about, and i guess i have to contact my clinic is that some people here say 500 cals of protein only, plus the carbs..veggies, fruit, etc... but my clinic said 500 cals of protein minimum, up to 1000. i think. |

Let your clinic know about your hunger issues. My doctor increased my AS when I had issues with hunger. As for your sweet tooth, go to the dessert recipe thread and try some of those. Most of them are really easy to make. Also, Walden Farms makes an amazing chocolate syrup and marshmellow fluff that are 0 calories and 0 carbs. Make sure you read the first few pages of the newbie thread, Welcome Newbies! Helpful info for week 1., and post #355 and #357 in the September thread, Shedding Pounds in September w/Medi Weightloss.

oh, in terms of sodium. I'm not a salt user, so I don't add it to anything, but maybe it's possible that my eating out a few times not a good idea? I specifically asked, for example, for egg beaters to be prepared completely plain, no oil, butter, salt, etc....just cooking spray. another time i had a only grilled chix brst w/lemon pepper seasoning at a steakhouse - again, being very specific that I wanted nothing else on it, cooked in it, etc.
is meat not a great idea? it's on the list as a medium fat protein. obviously i should chooose chicken, fish, etc. more often, but i do have lean cuts of beef too. |

Thank you! I will buy that Walden Farms stuff for sure...and look at recipes for including them.
The np wrote right on my page, where it says 500 calories of protein, she added in "-1000", so I'm assuming that is referring to protein cals, not total cals , but I should check. thanks again |

First off, I would love to address you by your first name. It seems more personal. So here goes... Meat and seafood is our primary source of protein on this WOE. The leaner the meat the better as it will stretch how much you can eat for the calories. Try to avoid process meats (once in a while for convenience is okay) because they have more sodium and other artificial ingredients. In general, the fresher the foods you choose (and this includes vegetables and fruit) the better. I strongly advise you to journal as some "Medi Legal" foods can send you out of ketosis, especially with the fruit. Every body is different and only you will know what does not work for you. For me it is cauliflower. In general, you will get more bang out of your food if you eat vegetables versus fruit. For me fruit is a treat and I use it to make desserts like strawberry shortcake or baked apples. And again read and reread your written materials. Not all vegetables and fruits are legal, for example potatoes, peas, carrots, winter squash, watermelon, pineapple ... You should have been given a list of "Medi Legal" fruits and vegetables. I put the list I received in the Newbie thread. McBoo, Jo and I have all reached goal and are on maintenance, so we know what we are talking about. We really want you to succeed and are passionate about it. Please, no more pizza, not even a bite. You have to get into the mindset to succeed. When you start taking bites and cheating you are playing with the program and throwing your hard earned money away. I started this program a week before Thanksgiving. I did not cheat through Thanksgiving, through Christmas, or through New Years and I had plenty of opportunities and occassions to justify it. Dec 22nd is my anniversary and Jan 1 is my birthday. My motivation was being tired of being fat, not wanting to gain another single pound, and my weight loss the first month. I even made dozens and dozens of full fat, full carb cookies over Christmas for my family and did not eat a single one. Did not even lick the spoon. I was that determined. Then on my week 1 weigh-in, I was rewarded with a 10.2 pounds loss. After 1 month I had lost 25 pounds. My secret, I stuck to the plan 100%, eating 700 calories each day (wth the help of the AS), and I exercised (cardio and weights) 1 hour 4 days per week. You may think it impossible not to cheat, but you have to find ways to make this WOE satisfying. For me that was the secret. Please try the recipes. I strongly advice trying the Oopsie roll recipe, then try experimenting with them. The things you can do with Oopsie rolls are amazing. You can make them sweet for a dessert or use them as a sandwich roll. I can honestly tell you that since I have been on this program I have found a substitute for everything I was craving. For me it has become a Way of Life. Now, please join us on the main thread, Shedding Pounds in September w/Medi Weightloss, where you can share with the general public. We don't bite and you will find the support, encouragement and inspiration amazing. Sorry this is so long, but I always have a lot to say. Good luck, hang in there, and keep posting. |

Don't get discouraged. It is hard when the losses are smaller than you want (last week I only lost .4 pounds)... But a loss is a loss as Susie would say. MANY times I don't see the pounds come off during the week either. I usually don't see the scale go down until the day of or the day before I weigh in. Sometimes the scale goes up during the week as your body is constantly in fluctuation. Water weight gain is probably from the fat cells after the fat is burned, they hold onto water then they will release it when they finally "give up". Are you exercising at all? That will help with suppressing your appetite. Try not to even have a taste of food that will throw you out of ketosis, it's a pain to have to go back to week one even for a day after you get used to having different foods. I found out that sugarless candy throws me out of ketosis- soooo not worth it!! Hang in there- it does get easier to abstain from foods not on plan the longer you stick with it. It's like your habits change. Also for the sweet tooth....I made the sweet oopsie rolls and put a little Walden Farms chocolate syrup and a spoon or FF cool whip on top!! It's yummy! Susie and Jo have provided the best advice possible for you. You don't mention what you are drinking - it must be plain water and then any extra can be coffee, tea etc... Also what is your age, ie are you menopausal, as this affects weight loss significiantly. I am struggling with menopause almost daily, but committment is the only thing that will keep you going. As Susie suggested you may need more AS in the beginning, talk to your clinic, they will help with this. And finally don't cheat, you are cheating yourself. Get tough on yourself and fight through it, in the end it is worth it. Trust us! good luck and let us know how you are doing. Robyn
